so I made a hatcher, to move my eggs into tomorrow night. Do I need a fan it it? its not air tight, is that gonna provide enough air> heat source is a heat light at the top through a screen

There are good and bad sides of fans. Fans keep the temps even in the bator but in a hatcher they can dry out the chicks. Placement would be key. Maybe a small computer fan to just move the air.

How long would you say til my chicks won't be afraid of me? I hatched these buggers and feed them, and spend all kinds of time with them, they still hate love.

:'(

By week 4 most chicks know who feeds them but once they are on the ground outside and notice you control the feed them little guys will be right under your feet all the time especially when you touch the feed

You stop turning on the end of day 18. 432 hours is the end of day 18. So no turning day 19, 20 and 21. If you put your eggs in the bator at 12 midday on Sunday stop turning by 12 midday Thursday. Day 21 is over on Sunday at 12 midday and if your temps are correct your hatch should be just about over

Great, thank you! :)

what can I do to improve the humidity? Heat is from a bulb at the top controlled by a dimmer like thing. Found a small fan to cixulate air.. temp is fine, I will be adding styrofoam to sides and back.. top is saran wrapped and taped so theres little room for air to escape too much. My biggest issue is that humidty does not get high enough.

Hey my fellow crazy chicken peeps!! Anyone breed a specific flock of EE's?? I'm considering doing a switch. I know they r not recognize as a specific "breed" & some even call a "mutt", so if I breed an EE roo to an EE hen, do I get an EE baby??? I want to breed and hatch something that will have all kinds of different looks when they hatch. I'm honestly a wee bit bored with little yellow birdies.

In need of some variety!!!
OVer the years the chicks from my BarnYard Special mix have givien a variety of colors in the chicks and the eggs. THe original girls were ( and are) Silver Laced Wyandottes, RIR, BA, BO, black sexlinks and a brown partridge EE and the roosters started as 2 black sex links and a silver spangled hamburg. Now the sons and daughters have added to the mix. ANd a BO rooster and 3 black copper marans boys and 1 speckled sussex rooster runs with that group. Oh, forgot the blue copper OE rooster. So that coop is a hodge podge of good layers of many eggs colors and the feather colors can be a wide variety.

No need to stick to just EE-- though I have a coop for them too!

you NEED air ventilation, or the eggs/chicks will suffocate. especially as they grow in the egg and get closer to hatching, their oxygen demands goes up considerably. I would say at least put 3 or 4 1/2" holes spaced around the top, with a couple smaller ones at the bottom to allow air to come in.

there is air/ ventilation, fan is pointed up and its deff not airtight at the top. I was able to increase humidity using a towel
