Incubators Anonymous

I have a question on an incubator. I just got a Brinsea Mini Advanced Incubator with an automatic egg turner. When the automatic egg turner is in, and all of the eggs are in, there is really no room for an additional thermometer. Can I trust the Brinsea's thermometer that is built in with the incubator, or is there a way to get a thermometer in there without compromising the amount of eggs that you can fit in there? Thanks

Hahaha. I got one of those. Too small. When the chicks hatch, be careful they don't get hung by the thermometer that is attached across the incubator top. And I had one die when it got his head stuck between the water well and the plastic plate on the top part! I only use it now for a chick infirmary. It has saved many chick lives. I use it when I have a distressed chick hatch, or I had to help one and it needed not to be stepped on by others or when my broody hen didn't hatch the last few eggs, etc. It has been invaluable for that use, but just too small for hatching. IMO

Does anyone know how to candle/see through the welsummer eggs at 7 days. Itried to candle some of the eggs yesterday I couldnt even see any air space. I am using a 5,000 lumen light bulb. I have an idea to look for but I just cannot even see anything past the shell. I usually wait until day 17 or 18 and then if they are dark or clear which helps.

Are you able to 'pin point' the light? You aren't just trying to hold the egg up to a regular light bulb without 'pin pointing' it, are you?

You can google candling information. Either 'how to make a chicken candler' or just 'candling chicken eggs'

I use a really strong small headed flashlight. I hold it by the head of the light and hold the egg in the 'o' of my thumb and pointer finger so that no other light shows except the light going into the egg.

Not sure I'm making myself clear. But, it works on dark eggs. Also, be sure to have the room really really dark. Good luck.

up date...I thought the blue arrow was a clear pull it is behind but still going... the black dots arepulls

the pink dots are from out of town due on the 20th, the rest are due the 16th.

That's a great, simple idea.

I usually write all over mine in pencil, so don't look very pretty by lockdown.

Of course if using a broody, pencil will wear off. For broody hatches, I make a simple mark with a Sharpie so I can remove any newly deposited eggs. (helps avoid a staggered hatch)

LOL, no I am trying to pinpoint the light. I made a candler and it does not seem bright enough but it hurts my eyes when I look at the light coming out of the hole. It just does not seem bright enough to see everything in the eggs. I might have put the hole closer to the light as it is about 6 inches away from the top of the light.

Hey bators addicts what is the best set it and forget incubator ? That you know of.
I believe it is a broody hen. How many were you thinking about hatching? I am sure that there are many on here that can help if you are planning on making one. Good luck with your decision.

I do not think that broodies are a set it and forget thing, but yes broodies are best. A good mechanical incubator is my next chioce since no broodies can hatch 48 eggs on demand all at the same time; unless you have like 5-7 of them at the same time. I don't want make one, I want to buy one.
