give her chicks so you can get more eggs! i don't think anyone here's gonna go broody, but if they do within 3 weeks, they get babies! whatever happens to hatch, any and all, big or little. 8)

I got two packages of eggs in the mail this morning. The package with the Maran eggs were leaking, and there were 4-5 eggs completely SMASHED!! How on earth do you SMASH 5 eggs??

guess i got very lucky with the dorking eggs. all 18 are in near perfect shape. they're the ones i wanted the most anyways. the others were ordered before i won the dorkings... but still disappointed because i love marans and EE too. but i'm crossing everything i can. would cross my ears if they were long enough. LOL

crossing my eyes and dotting my tees.

ok an update on the crunched marans eggs... i bought 6, got 7, there are 5 in the 'bator. 2 were smashed to bits, 2 are likely bad. the air cells were ruptured and bubbles go all the way around when you roll the eggs. the other 3 have loose air cells, where the membrane's peeled off the shell some but the air is still inside. i put all 5 n the 'bator though, and won't turn them for a couple days, in the hopes that the air cells will firm up in that time... i'll start them turning again on sunday, and candle them on wednesday and see what gets tossed.

so the count goes like this... 21 dorking, 14 EE, 5 marans, and 11 bantam mutts. I ended up putting all but the 2 worst dorkings, all but the 2 worst EE, and all the bantam eggs in the turner. the rest are in the hatching 'bator resting in an egg crate to keep air cells vertical. i'm guessing i'll have more than 9 dudds out of the 42 in the turner (since only 11 were home grown), and if needed will move the 'good eggs' around as needed to fill the turner. my guess is i'll have holes in it before we're done.

so now we play the waiting game...

Got my eggs today and only one broken. They were very well packaged though so it's no surprise. I am going to wait and candle them tomorrow after they have rested for a night and then I will put them in the incubator.

I have:

25 Delaware eggs (was 26 but one was broken) from bargain (thank you, thank you thank you!!!) and Stacy Tate.

and

15 Comet eggs from my own flock. I know they won't grow up to be comets but it's like a mystery egg. Have to try to see what will come out when they hatch. Could be almost anything. It's very exciting!!

Can't wait to get them in the incubator and see what hatches!!!

Fingers crossed for all who are hatching

well unfortunately, there are no dorking breeders that i've found "within driving distance" for me... these eggs came from florida, in very good shape, another is in maine that has eggs now and then, the rest are midwest that i've found.

my driving distance limit is about 2 hours round trip. that's about all i can handle sitting still in the car, because then either my legs are going to go away on me, or start twitching randomly, and it's debatable which is worse... (low back congenital defect) at least working from home i can choose to stand or sit at my discretion while answering calls for work. the only drawback is my "leash" is only about 3' long.

it's not so bad if someone else drives, i can recline the seat to stretch my back/legs, and if they go away or twitch, it's no biggie, just annoying.

Well, if the person packing the eggs is experienced, you can get good results from shipped eggs. I had a lady in New York who said my chicken eggs were the only ones she ever had shipped that hatched. I have gotten both good and bad results from shipped eggs I bought. I don't limit myself to local eggs because I love variety. My first shipped eggs off eBay didn't do so well, but I learned as I went along.
The post office is in business to move mail. They use a lot of machines. I don't think too many people there try to bash boxes, it just happens. I read one time where a lady practiced packing eggs and then dropping them off her roof to see if they break. Most well packaged eggs will make the trip . We just need to learn to incubate well before trying shipped eggs to get the kinks out. Just my opinion. Let's hear yours!
