I have Light Brahmas so they are like your birds alter ego, white for a base with black highlights but boy are they sweet. They are my future lap chickens.

Just want to give you the biggest reason I love to hatch. This is my silkie broody hen that not only hatched her two silkie eggs (3 didnt make it) but she is taking care of 5 marans.

Look under her wing, on oneside is a wheaten marans and you can barely see the black under the other wing which is another Marans (blue or Black)

i'm planning on building one, and i know several others have homebrew too. right now i'm using hovabator because it was affordable (bought the still air models and installed computer fans in them). i'm just looking for the perfect cabinet first. contemplating driving the truck in town tuesday when i go, even tho it sucks the gas down fast...

eggs went in yesterday.

hubby's suggested several things for me, talking out the build before i go get parts, so if you want to build or upgrade, i can pass on some suggestions for extending lightbulb life & such... he's even gonna draw me a diagram to put up if anyone asks... he's the electronics guy, i'm the one with power tools rofl.

OMGosh Rita, now I can't wait till my day old silkies can do that, I hope I have at least 1 girl (really hoping they all are). I have 2 girls with babies, a Spitzhauben (Ms Cruella) and a FCBM(Ms. Tessa). The Ms. Tessa has my silkies along with a duccle she stole from Ms. Cruella who lost 3 of her babies so far. Even though she is a good Mum, I think 8 was too many for her on her first go around. She has Marans and a CX x duccle mix (don't ask it was a very comical spectical) All of my duccle roosters love the meat birds

LOL i can imagine. kinda like my sultan and oegb... or sultan and quail d'anvers... all the hens have been bred by all the roos, so i have no clue what i'm hatching out... (went in yesterday, did i mention that yet? oh yeah. i did.

)

all bantams, i have;
roos: black japanese, sultan, crele oegb
hens: brahma (dark & buff), silver duckwing oegb, quail d'anvers, rir, red cochin...

ought to be some comical mixes in that bunch... tho i can say the cochin, ror and buff brahma aren't laying yet, at least not where i've found eggs yet. but they free range, so who knows...

I use and love my homemade incubator! I have very, very good hatch rates. 28/31 13/14 so far. There is a link to making it below. There are a few things I will change in the next one, but not the mechanics they are perfect! The next one will be bigger for the turner and more trays. He can do it! Very easy, and he is willing to help feed your addiction so let him have at it, maybe he will let you get two batches of eggs, one to test hatch and then the good eggs!!!! and then you are off and he will be addicted too

Pass that info over here!!!! I am going to build another one that has easier access to the trays and make them removable, but my light are not lasting very long so that would be great info.
