It is amazing what the birds will eat. I sort the hen food vs compost, and when I see them digging in the compost I wonder why I sort! LOL But I do. Gave them the Halloween pumpkins, too.

You mention corn to grow. I wonder what else is easy to grow for them. Mine seem to like the lawn and the grasshoppers that live there!

Most any greens are easy and will regrow after you trim them. My neighbor has a garden 100x 150 full of turnips

my chickens and mealworms eat them often. I plan to have a greens garden in the spring and fall next year if things slow down. Anything to cut the feed bill. Corn takes a lot of space and a long time to grow, I usually only get 3-4 ears each stalk. cherry tomatoes are prolific. I have seen threads that talk about the grans that are easy to grow. Might have to think about that too for the spring

What's hatching, folks? I just set 48 eggs in the Bator this afternoon to hatch by the moon. Got one Bator going to lockdown on the 15th. Only had two chicks hatch today.

NOT MY EGGS but I have 6 EE, 5 Swedish Flower Hens, and 21 Arucanas. Set them on Monday. These are my first shipped eggs so lets see what happens. She said she would be happy with 50% so

I don't know how to look for air cell issues so they all are in and I will make final decisions on the 14th day.

In an intact egg, the membrane keeps the air cell on the fat end of the egg. If that membrane is disturbed in shipping, when you candle you can see air moving around as you tilt the egg. But even if that happens, they may still hatch. Happy hatching!:)

I did candle them to see if I could make heads or tails. The air cells looked like they moved but

so they all are set and we will see what happens on Monday. I will leave them all in till day 14 just in case. Thanks

I have 6 more duck eggs due in 2 weeks, silkies due a week from tmw (Friday) and cochins due.. .. crap, I forgot to write down when I put them in. They've probably been cooking for ... 10 days or so... ?

I can't believe I did that. I just went to check the calendar and I totally didn't write down when I put them in.
