THis looked like a soupped up version of VIcki's idea. I remember her pics. And wanting to know how to make the baskets. Ended up using a cardbord box with the bottom cut out to keep my marans separated. THough a couple leg bands fell off and now I keep wondering which are my pure marans among the mongrel look a likes.

That happened with my odd white Lavender pullet too.... the only way I knew it was her.... she had blue legs... the others had green and yellow

the pure marans don't have yellow legs.... that should help.... huh?

Donna, I'll have to look now for the leg coloring! Many are street sweepers but I'm still not 100% sure. Guess I will throw a band on the most likely candidates and track them. DH was asking yesterday if these chicks were marans, yikes, thought he was on to me and figured out I had bought some hatching eggs last fall . . . . I just said yes, a few are marans. He just kept on talking about them with general interest. WHew. . . survived that one. He likes the chickens. We all do--the turkeys are interesting just not as smart and need to be herded every night into their coop. The chickens put themselves away!

I have a dozen marans eggs to ship to AK today. THen I can collect for myself for the Easter Hatch a Long. I'm very excited!!

I have pips and it is just barley day 19 WTH? Never had them pip that early.... temps have been perfect....

Are these eggs smaller than usual? The smaller eggs dry out faster, not sure if they hatch sooner. Hmmmm. THermometers starting to fail???

Hey, the reason DH did not react about the marans is that he has known for some time these are from purchased hatching eggs.

Have a few in the incubator now. Marans and easter eggers, a couple BO and Ameraucana/EE. The EE are blue eggs and who knows who the father is. THe Am/ee are EE rooster over EE and half AM hens. I"m starting to think I need to create a pen of pink laying EE hens/roosters. ANd all my stock goes back to one super hen!! She pumps out a huge egg everyday until she is a shadow of herself. THen I happily keep her from going back into lay until she is filled out again and several pounds heavier. Great hen.

ok finished my stack-a-brooder... decided to make it modular, kinda.

made a 4 shelf unit, the bottom edge of the top shelf is right at 6' tall, so the top shelf is just for storage.

then i assembled 3 brooder boxes, which can also be used as sale boxes for birds at a swap or whatever.
they measure just a couple inches shy of 2x2x4... (so they'll fit on the shelves)

to protect the bottom, since chicks love soggy shavings (they do, right?
wink.png
) i got a few pieces of that thin plastic stuff they put in overhead light fixtures and silicone'd it in so water wouldn't get under it.

and the finished product. sort of... the 3rd brooder is up on top since i didn't have anyone to put in it yet... not due for another week. you can't see the quail-ies, they're too short.

the wire front opens and is removable so you can get in and clean it out easily, and i have ceramic light fixtures installed inside, one for light (on a timer), the other for a heat emitter.
