Incubators Anonymous

I have a question.. While I'm waiting on my shipped eggs I'm storing my eggs from my little hen in my cool laundry room. I have 2 now :)
I candled both tonight.. the one that was laid on monday I didn't really see anything in it, the one laid today has a definite "dot" that floats around. I didn't see an air sack in either egg.
Is this normal?
I want to go wash my hands and candle them again. Am I going to become a candling addict now?

there's no real need to candle eggs that haven't been incubated... they only start developing once they go in the incubator.

you can keep them stored for up to 10 days from when they're laid and still have pretty good viability. I have hatched eggs as far as 3 weeks out, but your viability goes down dramatically after about 14 days.

OK, Thanks Karen :)
The first 2 boxes of my shipped eggs are due today! I'm getting so excited, can't wait to start incubating!

Only one did :(
7 perfect Lavender Orpington eggs, nicely bubble wrapped and hidden in peanuts. I candled them as I put them into their egg carton just because I couldn't help myself.. every one looks just fine so far :)

The other expected box, according to tracking, is sitting at the Huron post office, only 40 miles away.

Had I known, I would have taken my husband to work so I could have the car today and gone and GOT them!

Hello my name is Ray and I absolutely addicted to incubating, I love it. I hate it when your expecting multiple packages to be delivered the same day and one doesn't make it. It just blows up your plans. I've gone so far as to drive around the neighborhood stalking the postman to get my packages as early as possible. LOL I'm so glad there are more addicts out there that understand.

So far this year I've hatched (all bantams) Barred/Creole Wyandottes, Welsummer, Buff Columbian Rocks, Silver Penciled Rocks, Buff Rocks, Partridge Rocks and Barnevelders, and I have 2 Speckled Sussex sitting on Black, Blue and Splash Orpingtons.

Bantam Cochins that will be my next batch to hatch!

I am going to pick up some Silver Penciled Rocks on my way back from FL.... cuz I have to make the trip a good one by picking up eggs along the way. I am also picking up some SLW and Blue Rocks.... OH WHO KNOWS

That looks like my Australorps, and their eggs. I think Jerseys lay white. My black Australorps were fabulous layers, and always big dark eggs. Can you weigh a hen or rooster? There is a weight difference between Aust's and Jers's.

I am sure we can figure out how to weigh them and then I can let you know

Well it goes like this.....I love a nice glass of scotch on Friday after a 60plus hour work week. However, I don't think I need to join AA but.......who knows! I do know there is NOTHING like waiting for those magical 21 days to end. It is almost better to not incubate than to incubate and try to quit. It's a drug with positive results but you are hooked at day 21 of incubation. Week one: candle those puppies and place in groups of like growth (or not). Week 2: candle again and regroup if necessary. Skin is starting to itch and adrenal glands are "preloading". Week 3: Skin now crawling as I pour more water in to increase humidity. I do not open the incubator any longer than to pour in the water as I know "lock down" is in 4 days and i get to touch the eggs. (Lock down is where I take the eggs out of the auto-turner and let them rest on their side. This is where I need support to NOT candle again. For example, if "lock down" is a Friday and had to choose between the glass of scotch or look one more time and candle the eggs....my wife runs for the cast iron pan and a glass of scotch. For I will candle the eggs. She calls me a "hatch-o-holic". So if this is a support group of "IA", I guess that's OK! Dang its fun.
