well, i've relocated ducky to a brooder box and am integrating babies to her now. any idea how many babies a hen can handle? ducky's a silver duckwing oegb...

think 8 barred rocks and 4 asst bantams are too many?
I'm not familiar with what size the OEGB are . . . .

My BA handled about 24 med and lg eggs when her friends contributed to the pile.

i'm not worried about eggs... but for LF eggs, she might get 4 under there easily LOL. oegb = old english game bantam. i think she weighs a little over a pound. LOL and the camera is out in the truck but i'll get pics tomorrow. she's got 6 CHUNKY LF barred rock chicks and 4 bantams. one pure cochin, a cochin/oegb, an oegb/bantam rir, and a silver duckwing x silver grey dorking. that last is a surprise, but she likes my big guy, even tho he has to stand on the ground over her as his stance is wider than her shoulders. LOL (1 lb vs 8 lb)

edited with a newer pic... for size comparison that's a standard milk crate, just over 12" square. and she takes up less than half the width.

450

edit: well she's got 10 chicks, and 2 more pipped eggs. plus there's still 2 thinking about doing something in the hatcher still.
edit again... 11 chicks and 1 pipped egg.

My hens are 4-5 pounds. 1# is much smaller, how many eggs for her?

Not in my realm of knowledge. Hope someone has an answer for you.

well both of the pipped eggs have hatched, so she's got a dozen babies. most of whom will probably be bigger than her in 2-3 weeks. LOL

1 to go. one of the unhatched eggs has pipped. guess he's just slow. i've decided a few of the chicks are going to stay in the brooder and probably go to the sale next weekend.

ok barred rocks. bigger white on the head is a pullet? or am i backwards?

i think i'll let her keep some pullets. anyone ever had a free range hen with babies in general population? will she keep them away from the others?

Karen, how do you keep chicks warm at a sale??

ANd I can never remember the spot thing. I'll go look it up.

I'm back.
Male has the white spot on head. Pictures here, about half way down.

ok well, they all have spots since these are pure not sex-links. i just can't remember which is bigger.

and at a sale, i use a 10 gallon fish tank with screen lid, and a towel draped over it to keep the heat in. any sun shining on it warms it up quick.

Donna, the OE and Cuckoo marans are developing surprisingly well for shipped eggs.

I'll know more in another 7 days.

I recycled the WL today; you were right, the rooster has not been able to do his job due to the injury. THe dogs enjoyed the eggs.

Does anyone know where I can advertise eating eggs for sale? THey are coming out my ears!!
