Incubators Anonymous

OK so here is the thing I can't get past. Help me.

I incubate my eggs in my Hovabator 1588 (forced air). I remove my eggs pre-hatch and put them into an LG incubator (use it as a hatcher). I cannot bring myself to let these eggs hatch in the hovabator, since the time a few chicks came out in there and they must have immediately crawled under the turner and as a result they suffered injury or developmental problem...(they were probably in there 6 hours) Is the turner dangerous? what are your thoughts about the "separate hatcher" idea? It's all I've ever done, but I want to learn. Thanks

I have always used a hatcher. I use a homemade incubator and I have staggered hatches, so it was really my only option. I would think a turner could be dangerous. I have never seen a turner other than pictures. I could see how chicks could get under them. Even in my homemade turner it could be bad if a chick could get in it. In a pinch, I have put eggs that should have hatched in the bottom of my big bator and no issues. I only did that once when I had about 110 chicks hatching and these were not finished and I had to get the others out.

Update on the Ameraucana eggs hatching. Today was day 20 and I had TONS of chicks that have hatched. I was SOOOOO tempted to open the hatcher up just to see what was going on.

This will be my first batch of Wheaten Ams.... when I left 4 were out and 4-5 still cooking. I think 1 or 2 had pipped. In the Lavender basket.... 1 out of 5 and I didn't see any others that had pipped. There is another basket with eggs from another pen and I could not see how many if any were out. BUT SUPER EXCITED about the wheatens.... they are my very own and the firsts I have hatched out of that pen

I also have some hired BLRW eggs in there. I saw 7 moving on day 17. 3 were out and 4-5 pipped....there are 10 in there. 1 I am sure quit mid way, but gave it a shot anyway. This is the hatch I put in for the trade day sale.... that is NOT going to happen now

Sold 5 laying pullets in 2 days and hopefully 3 more tomorrow. That leaves..... 4 left I think.... now to find out which ones are the LAZY LEGHORNS I have been feeding for months and only getting an egg or 2 a week from 3 pullets...... they have to go. I have replacements growing from my GREAT layers.... but the roo is a brother to the lazy girls..... Makes me wonder if breeding hatchery leghorns is ok?

Anybody else hatching something right now......

Me! I am hatching out guineas and Barred Rocks. I am heading to bed but expect them to be hatching tomorrow.

Hello ToRippy, yes, I'm watching a few rock and rollers in my little HovaBator. Put in 42, and have about 33 left in there that I think have a chance. This is my first try, so not too sure about my candling skills. Tomorrow is my 20th day. I'm bracing myself for anything, and have camera on hand. GreenGirlGrammy in AL.

well, I just set 100 something black and red sex links. I set them in the bator late last night. so I am taking this as the first day that they are in the bator. I also set a few silkie, and odd and end eggs in my Leahy incubator I have in the bed room.
when I went out to feed the chickens I managed to get 7 lavender Orp. Eggs and about 6 silkie eggs today. I was really happy to see that many lavender eggs I am hoping that they will hatch. I have them in cartons right now and tipping them back and forth till I decide If I want to add them to the Leahy bator or my 1622.
I would like to find some black orpington eggs or roo and hen.

as for hatching, i'm expecting some turkey and cochin eggs in the mail today, so i'll be setting them and my bule/black mille/partridge pen and a few black/self blue cochins.
