Sanding is a technique applied to shipped marans eggs. Some people swear by it. Carefully sand the egg to look like a watermelon allowing more moisture to pass out of the egg. You will find the details under post #1 of the Easter Hatch long started by Mahonry.

If you are needing bigger air cells why add the moistened gauze? My RH can drop to 18 at times; I figure that balances when it runs higher into the 30"s.

I love the idea of sanding.... wondering if I should even consider doing it this late in the game, maybe wait till the next group go in. I'll look at the Easter Hatch post. As for the RH, I was so concerned because mine dropped to exactly that.... 18 and I panicked.... thought it should be into the 20s.... I know, I know.....

but it never got past 30%, and thank God for dry Southern California weather.... so far, so good. I have to say that seeing the foot in the egg last night just perked my spirits up to right where they should be the night before lockdown....

I'm blessed to have a family who puts up with my madness. They watch me go through the highs and lows of the whole thing and just love me through it. I'm just certain this is the ONE!!

Please..... don't think me too stupid, but (feeling stupid already) I go into lockdown tomorrow night.... TUESDAY. Can I sand some of my Marans eggs with smaller air cells or is it only done before setting?

Wow.... even after reading the Easter hatch list that one wasn't answered...which tells me that's a dumb question, but I'm hoping not.

I'm wondering if maybe you can wait till they start pipping then raise humidity. Not sure if that would cause to many problems or not. I guess it depends on how many you have with good airsacs verses small ones.

Has anyone on here had a chick hatch upside down? i have them in an egg carton and the baby is kicking strongly but it's on his head what can i do without compromising the rest???? pulling may hair here

It will die if you don't take it out of the egg carton. It is up to you but I would move it to lay on its side. What kind of incubator do you have? A small styrofoam? If so you can take it to the bathroom run the hot water till it steams really well and then you can open the bator and move the egg.

Ok i opened since the others had not pipped yet and one is hatched he seems ok just has what looks like a knot on its head but very strong so fingers crossed that it will be ok and the knot will go down i put more warm water and the humidity dropped only from 50 to 48 i added more warm water after i flipped the little guy and the humidity came back up pretty fast so i think all will be well thanks for the quick response i think you saved my chick.
