So I told everyone earlier that I wasn't going to hatch out any more this summer since I have so many babies crawling around the house right now having more would be just crazy. So I cleaned out my incubator and got ready to put it away and went out to do chores. Low and Behold I now have 3 hens who are broody enough that they would take you hand off if you try to take their eggs away. They have 14 eggs between them. I also have one of my Cochin hens that came up missing tonight. My first thought is oh no she's holed up somewhere with hidden eggs and she's going to bring back a big brood of babies. Next time I decide to not hatch anymore I should probably let the girls know too huh?

It's going to be an interesting summer.

Where can I find out what color my new keets are or do I need to get pics so you can just tell me?

I need to read my email and see what my options are too....

Well I came home at lunchtime and we've got one out!!! I have a question..... the yolk sac seems to be only about 80% absorbed. When she moves around, the yolk seems to stick to the base of the basket that she's in and she's a bit stuck. Drying nicely, but at what point do I intervene????

She's been officially "out" for about 6 1/2 hours. She's able to stand up on her own, but it's a bit of a struggle. Am I doing a good job just leaving it alone??? Ooooooh yikes!!!

BTW? two more pips. EEEEEEEEEEEEEK

ok well, so far so good, i guess. LOL i've got 1 of each out so far. black cochin, blue mystery cochin (either mille or partridge, not sure yet), cuckoo marans, black copper marans, welsummer and an olive egger. all but the cochins were shipped. the cochins are my first babies from my chicks hatched in November. my mille/partridge pen is doing AWESOME! don't think i've had a clear egg out of them yet! my black split self blue pen... he likes the sb hen better than his black split girls. but the chick out predates the sb girl, so i know at least one of the black girls is fertile. LOL

2 more cuckoo pipped, 1 black copper, another wellie and olive egger all pipped. got bbs ameraucana due tomorrow, and 1 more mystery cochin due today.

any idea if i can sex the black copper marans or wellie at hatch? best guess? i was hoping to take a few to the swap this weekend.

Sometimes you can feather sex the marans. BUT they would have to be bread for that. Marans you can tell pretty quickly the roos.
