Does anyone else ever feel like a bad egg mum
hmm.png
I look at the picture , and I like all my little eggys but I find my self thinking things like well If I have to lose say 25 % of those I dont want it to be these ones or these ones or these ones but I guess it would be ok to lose these and these and these and then as soon as I catch my self I feel bad I should love evry eggy just as much as the other eggies right

well, i'm not sure what you qualify as a warmer climate. well, anything south of massachusetts is warmer, yeah, but the chicks still got to romp in the snow and ice plenty. their house was a 2x3 doghouse, with a horse blanket draped over it and a 100 watt heat emitter running continuously, and a heated water bucket outside. so maybe we aren't exactly the frozen wasteland of the north (i'm from maine, so yeah i can say that. LOL) but it still qualifies as winter, unlike what you might find in florida or parts of texas... 14 years in maine, 12 years in south florida, and a couple in colorado, i'll stick with virginia. we have all the seasons, just not as extreme as the some other places.

well, sometimes i wonder if i'm defective . or maybe just a realist...

i see all those eggs, knowing chicks are growing in most. but the realist in me acknowledges that not all of them will hatch, and of the ones that do, not all of them will live and grow to adult chickenhood. so instead of worrying about the ones that don't make it, i just keep attempting to hatch more, instead of eating the eggs, and give them the chances the ones that don't hatch are missing out on...

i don't get overly attached to the chicks, or the birds as they grow, for the most part. tho i do have a few favorites. and even lived with a sick rooster in my house for over a week while i treated him for pneumonia, where other people would have just put him in the freezer. worried that every gurgle would be his last, and excited when he pooped for the first time in 3 days, or took a drink, or started eating, to the point where he was crowing at us during dinner time because i wouldn't share with him. (btw, he REALLY likes cheesy eggs and fettuccini alfredo LOL) and i think he's grateful, if a rooster can be. i go outside and he follows me more than my dogs do! LOL

I will second that, we get seasons, jut not extremes.....

My mind is still stuck in the 50/50 thing.... 50% will hatch (usually better than that at my place
cool.png
) and 50% will be roos and now I have tossed in the only 10% are good for breeding..... So I have to do a lot of hatching to grow out what I need to use for breeders. Like you said some will not make it out of the brooder, some will be lost to .... what did you call it "natural culling"

so that is a lot of chicks to hatch. Then I have to hatch the ones to sell to pay for the deadbeat chicks I need to raise.

I'm hijacking my Mothers BYC while her home Internet is down (She did ask for my help
hide.gif
) She needs lots of help with self control, (don't look at me) but since she's hatching, let's get something COOL! Actually, I have a 3 1/2 yr old who loves Nana's & Papa's chickens and I'd like him to have a Pet chicken, as in little, sweet and Cool looking of course, I like the Japs but mom isn't convinced they are in the "sweet" category. I know the silkies are sweet but the kiddo doesn't think they are real chickens so scratch that.
Anyway, tell Nana her grandson needs ________, you fill in the blank. I'm no chicken breed expert, that's why I have enlisted you! Now you get a chance to live vicariously through her and she has an excuse to do another hatch.
Thanks

I am using the computer at work and see my DS is "Helping" (or is he guilting me?) me, and Gabrielle1976 is showing me how it's done. Hope we get Internet back at the house soon. DS says they have to fix the roof in order to fix the internet, since the dish sits on the roof. Detail, details, just fix it! No more power outages, we have back up now. I have already gotten 2 egg shipments in, one more on the way (I still have to replace the W/BW Am and the guineas, sigh). WHAT? Well I have to replace the ones that were in when the power went out , am I right? Some one tell me I'm right!! Otherwise of course I'd have been done for the season and I could have put the incubator up till fall. Now DS want a pet for the Grandson! What's wrong with the BJG that hatched the other day? They are nice and cuddly.
