I only have 3 pullets in my EE pen. The other pens are hens.... unless you count all the pullets that are not laying yet

any day now

I have not had a problem hatching from my pullets.... The EE pullets eggs are hatching just fine at my place.

This weeks's hatch went much better than the 1st batch of eggs you sent. Thinking heat during shipping & the issue I had with a flooded basement wreaking havoc on bator humidity probably coulda had a lot to do with the 1st batch. Everything that popped outta this batch has made it & is doing great.

Well, I did it. I unplugged the Sportsman.

The last batch I got from Donna went into lockdown this morning and I found 2 chicks, 5 pipped and one trying to zipp upside down when I got up to go to work tonight. So that's all Folks, at least for awhile.
I was telling DH I needed to move some of the chicks "up" but I've run out of places to put Juvies

well, HM... looks like 'bator #2 is running warmer than #1... eggs all went in lockdown tuesday night, due tomorrow. walked by this morning and had 1 blue copper marans out, a black still sitting in the shell looking around (i keep them in egg crates for hatching), and at least 3 more pipped. 5/6 blue barred rock eggs pipped, and 3-4 cuckoo marans so far. the blrw went in about 12 hours later (slow PO), so i should start seeing pips by tonight i hope.

now debating if i give them to a broody momma for the first week or 2, or make them brooder babies. leaning toward brooder babies. i don't want to tempt the raccoons again. but i'll probably give her the EE's due next wed.

ok just thought of a question... what would you do?

incubator #1 seems to be spot on for hatch dates, #2 a bit warmer than #1, since eggs hatch a day early typically (same thermometer says same temps), but my hatch rates from #2 seem better than #1.

would you change anything?

Just a quick question for my favorite IA folks....... I have my 2 one year olds who we have just integrated with the juniors and the older girls are beating the hell out of the wee ones. Juniors are 3.5 months old and are outnumbering the big ones, but my B*&%chy Barred Rock has had to be isolated now in chicken jail for 3 days...... breaking my heart to see it.

I so value this particular thread's opinion.... you all have been so wonderful. Please please please suggestions?

Thanks everyone, Jane

No, don't change anything. yet

YOu know what they do precisely. Have you tried setting eggs based on the size of the eggs? Have you looked at other factors besides the temp? Have you tried all types of eggs in BOTH machines or do you tend to favor one machine for a particular egg? Sorry Karen, I tend to look at all the factors before changing one.

PS someone in Maine is looking for dorkings. Can I give her your name?

well, in general i do try to spread them out, but this time it just seemed, with clears pulled, etc, i had more room in one than the other, so all donna's eggs went into #2, and the next morning the blrw went into #1 when i moved a bunch of eggs over to the hatcher (to make room).

i don't like relocating eggs once they're set, so didn't spread them out after setting.

all the eggs hatching this time around are LF. none of my cochins are laying right now. they're all 'broken broodies'.

and PS, yes. 8) and i'm even hoping to go up early october to visit family so may do some poultry transport as well (depending on hubby).

PLenty of space is optimal, and a possible place for the 3.5 month olds to escape from the mean old biddies is a a real help (like a big crate with a smaller door space, so only the wees can fit inside, or a penned off area with similar smaller door). They have to establish pecking order, and need to be left alone to do so, but if their lives are in danger then something might have to be done. If they have enough space to accomplish this, all will be well, in time.
Best of luck to you all!!!
