Indian Runner duck got its leg chewed off!! Not even a stump left. :*(

Yes, I will be supervising him always.

I treated his wound today. There was no open-ness anymore, the raw area looks like it has sealed shut. No leaking or bleeding either. He has been preening himself so he looks a lot better. I did rub some polysporin on the area but he kind of was preening that area too, so I guess no more polysporin because he will be eating it.

He stood on one leg for a couple seconds today! I am so amazed at his progress so far, his will to live is astounding. To be so hurt and to be ale to escape and to survive! Life is truly amazing. I am not saying he is in the clear yet but for the amount of progress he has made in one day gives me great hope.

I dont think it was a fox that did this. A racoon yes! They have the capability to reach through the hole and drag out a duck. Foxes would only get as far as their noses would let them. The best way of finding out what it is is to take boards or something and place them all around the little house they were in. Then sprinkle flower on the boards, if there is nothing in the trap in the morning look at the boards and see what kind of footprints they are. It wouldnt be fair to the fox if you shot it because you THOUGHT it was the one that killed your ducks. I dont like hearing people killing animals period but I know we have to protect our babies. But please be sure it was the fox before you kill it. If it was just passing by when you saw it then you killed an innocent animal.

Our Duck got bitten by a huge snapper turttle yesterday in our pond, we manged to save him from the turttle but one of his legs is mangled we treated him with triple antibiotics nad covered the wound. we brought him to a wildlife sanctuary but they just wanted to put him down, because they said "a one legged duck wont be able to do anything" the ducks spirits are up and he is eating. i wish there was a Vet that could help us.How is your Indian Runner doing?

Ahh poor lil thing. I hope he will be ok. I have a raccoon trying to dig under my pen. I am thinking of running electric wire around bottom outside of my pen.

People are so quick to put animals down. I was on youtube and found a bunch of video's of one legged ducks.

There are a few more but these are the best I could find. Its not a graceful hop/walk..but they are able to get around and do all the things ducks do (just a little bit different). My duck is doing really well today. He is able to turn himself around no problem and get to his water and food. I handle him multiple times a day to change his paper and he is very relaxed in my hand. I think I will bring him outside to munch on some grass with his flock today.

How old is your duck? How much leg is left? My poor guy has no bend in his leg or anything..its like it just got removed cleanly. The duck will compensate for his lack of leg and figure a way to get around.

The poor thing. I am glad to hear it seems to be coping ok. I tend to agree with the rest it sounds like a coon. I have a victim of one in my flock, it's recovering.. but hard to say whether it will ever be 100% ..

Well we took our Duck to a small country Vet, and he is taking the mangeled leg off as we speak, we are going to be able to pick her up around 5 tonight, so she will be a One legged duck, he said she will still be able to swim and hop around it will look akward but she should be fine.
There is not going to be any stump they are gonna cut it up neer the hip, I know two other ducks that will be happy to she there sister.
