she grew really fast but then slowed down. She's really not that big. About the size of my hens. My Pekin on the other hand is HUGE. Also, my ducks ate a TON as they were growing but slowed way down in that area too. I was panicking thinking how am I going to feed these eating machines? Ha. The Pekin started laying at around 18 weeks and the khaki around 20.How does your khaki duck compare in size to your chickens? my khaki ducks are 10 weeks old and they are larger than my production red chickens. Also about how old are you ducks? I'm curious as when to expect an egg.
We went to my husband's high school class reunion this evening and I had a great excuse to leave early . . . I had to go home to lock the coop door! And actually, before I locked the coop I had to get the two brown orp girls out of the bushes where they roost every evening and put them in the coop. I can't blame them for not being excited about entering the Coop of Doom with The Five Mean Hens. Luckily no one was available to take care of the chickens, so I had a good reason for leaving early. (I returned later to pick him up before he could run off with his old high school gf)
CRSelvey~ Bella really doesn't have a friend or are you using the same angle that you're using regarding your Cochin? Your husband might suggest that the two be friends-- problem solved. Just giving you a head's up, so you can get your rebuttal prepared.
When I've worked with chicken wire, I've decided that it's the worst and then when I've worked with hardware cloth, I've decided that it's the worst. They both are horrible. Hope your thumb improves. It's amazing how the smallest injuries seem to hurt the worst.
YES! Mine totally changed a few days ago and I've had glitches with it and with my PM count-- it varies back and forth and makes no sense.
I am rethinking Mishawaka actually because although I was thinking this move may be temporary, so in the city was fine, I am now thinking that it may be more permanent and in that case, I would want a more rural home with some acreage. Will be home-searching in Waky, Nappannee, etc. for a farm instead. Still close to Mishawaka and my mother-in-law who needs us back there as her health is failing.
Anyway, thank you for the warm welcome and I'll see you around as our move becomes closer.
So this is Sesame up close this afternoon. She's panting because it's hot. Maybe somebody can spot something I don't see. Taking her to the avian vet tomorrow, so yeah...

MrTattoohead~ Watermelon or cut up grapes are good for keeping chickens hydrated. You are doing the right thing by taking her to the vet to find out exactly what's going on. You're doing a great job taking good care of Sesame. Several members have guessed it's Marek's, but it might not be so stay positive. Hopefully, it's something with a cure. We will be anxious to hear the diagnosis and are wishing you the best. For a chicken coop, you might think about getting a utility shed. You can get them cheap or fancy. If you change your mind about chickens, you will still have a useable shed. John
That's a good point to tell Indybirdman, Old Salt/John! He could use the donated wood he's receiving to make boxes or partitions, etc. inside the shed.
Indybirdman, check craigslist for sheds or adaptable structures, too. There are many members of this thread who are talented at repurposing existing structures or materials. In addition, here are some ideas from the main BYC site: https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=repurposing

yeah two ducks are plenty for eggs!I'm glad to hear the eating slows down. I just sold one of my 3 girl ducks thinking of winter feeding costs. I really won't need more than 2 laying ducks since I don't plan to try and sell duck eggs.
let me know if they have any chicks or good specials on supplies. i stopped in at orschelns today. they had fry pan specials, cornish cross, and some red layers (not sure if sex link, rir, etc).
Well, I've had a lousy evening. :/ But I won't bog y'all down with that.
CRSelvey: I have 6 generations of birds plus some splurge additions in my chicken yard, and you wouldn't know which generation was which just by looking at them. They seem to be mostly a flock, though the youngest and the most meek kind of stay at the sidelines and out of everyone's way. I don't know how long you've had your birds, but maybe in a year or two you'll find them less cliqueish and more of a begrudging family unit.![]()
