INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Pipd, at least now you know you have a broody if you want one.
She looks pretty serious too!

Of course. :D This obviously is her serious face.

Seriously, though, weighing the cuteness factor versus the 50-50 rooster-hen ratio (that is, if I'm lucky I'll get as many pullets as cockerels) makes it an easy choice for me. I already had to rehome a cockerel because I didn't have the room to keep him. :/ Maybe next year.

As a side note, though, I didn't realize how much self control I had when it came to chickies! :yesss: My victory for the day!

Yes I do [breed bantam Cochins]. I hatched some in July and Aug; they are Frizzled and Smooth Black bantam Cochins. I love them! Unfortunately the one in July is a Frizzle female and I only have Frizzled males...but she has such a wonderful personality! I call her baby girl..she runs to me and if I'm squatting down she jumps up in my lap. She was a lone ranger being a July hatch and my next hatch wasn't til Aug. My Aug hatch was 2 Frizzled boys and 1 smooth girl. Spitting images of their parents! Love that! I've debated diapering her and having my first house chicken but O the ridicule I would receive for that!! My family and extended family already shake their head at me! Makes me pretty self conscious about it most days. Then I go out for a visit with my feathered friends and all is better! lol Such is life!
ellymayRans ~ Oh, she sounds so sweet! My chocolate bantam orp Bonbon acted like that at first, but then she picked up on cues from Adeline who has always been nervous. Bonbon is still much more friendly, but she hesitates more than she used to.

I guess if you only have black ones, I'll have to wait until bradselig accepts my challenge of hatching two girls, one frizzle, one regular, one lavender, one blue. I already have a black chicken, my BJG, so I'm trying to vary colors.
Okay so my silkies are still laying and I don't like eating the eggs. I have fertile eggs everyday from them. They are really too small to eat and make really cute babies. Anyone interested?
I think pipd just inserted ear plugs!
Hehehe, but, but they are smaller chickens, and I did sell off 45 guinea the past 2 weeks

Wow, subtracting 45 guinea is impressive!

I still have at least 20, but that's a comfortable number. They are priceless little guys.
We have tons of grasshoppers, ticks, spiders and ants everywhere spring thru fall it seems.
They eat mice too! I also like the alarm call they make it somethings wrong.
But, I am a lil hard of hearing, they do get pretty loud with so many!

That's funny...I can't even imagine how loud!
At the Bloomington Poultry show this past year there were 3 and WOW were they ever loud! I stood in amazement of just how loud and funny they sounded! First time for me.

I got the nerve today to do a tad more candling .. only did 3 of the 40 ... but I was thrilled to see 2 little ones moving about in there! Only 1 of the 2 I candled from my now missing Silkie and 1 of the NN eggs! Here's hoping to happy healthy peeps the 21st!! I'll for sure post pics and provide updates!! Suspense the last week is killer!!

Oh thats just wonderful news! Its so very painful to lose one. At least you may have some of her babies to remember her by.

They do not like change or new things.
They sure made that fox feel stupid last summer, he could not get near them.
All the birds run for the coops when they start, I think they know its a warning call.

Here's one of the 2 Silkie Roos I have with one of my boys, Lincoln. The other is blue with the similar hackles. I'm not real up on my Silkies so forgive me...they are just for fun. Are they considered Paints?
What a sweet child, he is adorable! I am so new to silkies, I can't help.
There's paint and splash i think but don;t know the difference. Anyone please, advice?

Here is "mommy"...the missing girl. She was so small and dainty. I really do hope to have some of hers hatch successfully. Will be my first hatch of Silkies.

And then the "Blue" boy...not very good pics I know. Not sure if it was them moving or me shaking...sometimes I just can't keep my hands from shaking! Hate that!
He has the most Blue earlobes! But the Black boy pictured with my son is quite a bit bigger than the one below. Unless it comes out looking exactly like "dad" not sure I'd be able to tell who fathered them!

It's my understanding that Paints are similar to splash in appearance; white with dark spots. I don't know if it's an accepted color in Silkies, but those birds look like silver or silver partridge to me. :) Very pretty.
