INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I just found your forum and wanted t let all of you know I was praying for the residents of Indiana and other states of course. I was a truck driver until injury ruined my career. Driver for Werner Transport for a while and was based out of Lebanon Indiana. I was dedicated driver to the Pamida stores in the area. At any rate I am glad that from reports I've heard thus far damage was limited. I'm in West Virginia, the "storm" pretty much passed over me with just a little wind and a half hour of down pours. Scared my Dog pretty bad but my Chickens weren't phased at all. Hope and pray nothing like that happens again anytime soon! Be Well and Roost in Safe Places...lol.
Thank you for your kind words. Very nice to meet you, my DH is a driver also. He did haul steel but went to a local company recently and drives a triaxle now.
I am so sorry to hear of your injury.

We took some new pictures of our 21 week old BA rooster over the weekend...

First for scale:

Now for detail:

Gorgeous! He looks like my Rebel!
For those looking for hay, if you have a sale barn nearby it might be a good resource. I haven't paid more than $3.00 a bale for hay and $3.50 for straw this year. Up until last month it had been in the $2.00 range.

In chicken news I think I have my first broody girl. I'm trying to decide if I should order eggs for her or just use some that we have around. This will be my first time but not hers. She is supposedly a fabulous mama. I really would like some SQ bantam cochins for dd to show next year. Are there any banty cochin breeders in the central Indy area? If I don't buy eggs now I will probably be in the market this spring for some and maybe an adult bird or two to show.
X2, There's been some good deals on craigslist too. I always need some, so I stock up whenever I can.
You can check our member list also, the link is at the bottom of this post.
Merry Christmas to me! Just ordered a dozen Tolbunt polish eggs. Better be looking for a backup if power goes out again with these guys cooking!
Ohhhh how exciting! Good luck

Jchny2000: thnk u... Glad ur DH is local now hope is better for you t have him home more. I love being home but am getting bored and doing things I've never done before (ie:raise chickens) to curb th boredom. Injury is still causing issues so can't work. My girls keep me busy though. Is nice meet you too. : ) glad I found your forum such amazing people on here!!!!

Glad everyone seems to be ok after the storms this weekend! Defiantly glad to hear Farker and Old Salt are alright! I'm thankful the wind has finally quit howling here today too!!

Spent my morning playing Tetris with straw bales. Now I'm ready for a nap!

I'm pretty sure Ivermectin has a withdrawal period for meat and eggs. Wazine does as well. Valbazen I believe is questionable. It doesn't have a withdrawal for other animals when slaughtered, but most still recommend a withdrawal period. Eprinex is an Ivermectin product that seems to work better than ivermectin and I believe does not have a withdrawal period.

I have found the Rooster Booster dewormer at Rural King. It does not have a withdrawal period and I believe they are one of the very few actually approved as a dewormer for chickens.
Thats interesting, I will look for it next time I buy.
BTW: Day 19 and I am hearing peeps coming from the incubator!! Any day now! Thursday is hatch date but I'm betting I get a few tomorrow by the sounds of it! I had that last time. only some of the peeps started day 18 right after I took them out of the turner..had a few hatch day 19 then too. Wondering if my temp on it is running a little hotter than its reading. Hmmmmmm

This is the time I find myself struggling being away from it! Which will be harder on me cuz it's down in the basement. Last hatch I had it in my bedroom so it was easy to disappear for 15 mins at a time and my family just thought I was back in the master bath or something! LOL Funny how DH and boys freak out yelling for me if they can't find me in the "house"! Ha! They will then go out to the chickens ... they never think to look in the basement! That's more the boys playroom ... not mine!

The thermometers are so frustrating! I need to replace all of mine, and get several same type so I am not always worrying.

I got a new SD card finally for my camera, instead of using my phone all the time, so I got some farm pics. You all know me, constantly posting pictures. Hope you don't mind. :)

And the little silkies needed a bigger brooder, so we improvised

Alright I'm turning on my ancient desktop to edit/add members info to the members list. If you want added or need anything changed let me know and I'll get it done tonight. Otherwise it will likely be a day or two before I can get to it (but still not an issue for me to do!). Please don't feel bad for bugging me about changes, I'd rather have to update it several times a week and have accurate info on there than have an incomplete or out dated info! So send me those changes/new info!
Ugh someday I will update my list...
Quote: I think that's what I always do also. I am way late deworming need to get it done.

Evening, folks. I had a bit of excitement this morning with the girls. Just as I was finishing scooping the coop for the day, I noticed there was something wrong with my Light Bron Leghorn, Whiri. One side of her face was covered in some sort of black gunk. After finally catching her for a closer look, I realized that it was dried on blood!
th.gif
Instant panic mode! Thank goodness I had my chicken first aid kit handy! So I got her cleaned up and couldn't actually find a definite source for the blood, just that it looked like a couple of the tips on her comb had been bleeding, and the side of her face that was covered in blood is the side that her comb leans to. I do realize that their combs will bleed a lot when wounded, but MAN, I didn't expect quite so much from a seemingly small wound! I think maybe someone pecked her in the middle of the night. Most of my older girls are molting, so everyone's in a bad mood out there as is.

These birds keep me on my toes sometimes.
oh my, glad she is ok!

I had a Wow! moment this afternoon. I'm still trying to finish getting my garden boxes tucked in for the winter, spreading hay mulch & manure. I walked past one of the boxes that I had finished Saturday afternoon and noticed there was a concrete block laying at a weird angle in it. I wondered how it got there and then realized it was one of the concrete blocks I had placed on the front anchors of our hay storage shed last week to help stabilize it during a really windy day. This is the same shed that got blown over during Sunday's storm and is about 30 feet from the garden bed where I found the concrete block! I still can't figure out how that block managed to get hurled in the air when the shed flew up -- would have been amazing to see! Just glad it didn't do any damage.

And if anyone around us needs eggs, our chickens are still laying -- got 26 today -- been averaging 20 a day lately. I took 20 dozen to the food pantry today and still have 11 dozen in the fridge plus a few dozen duck eggs. I've been trying to do some extra baking to use the duck eggs, but I can't keep up with them -- collected 9 eggs both yesterday and today from those girls!
D.gif
Anybody have any good recipes that use a lot of eggs besides quiche, egg casserole, deviled eggs, etc??!!
WOW that could have been BAD.
I do cook and feed them back to the birds, and use them for the pigs too.
Check out allrecipes.com for some good ideas, I have found some great recipes there!
Parasites continued . . . Even though by the time I finish posting the worm info for kabhyper, she has already treated her chickens, I will post this in case others need it and I'll make a folder with this info in it for future reference.

kabhyper ~ You know that we love photos! I especially liked seeing Lavender and her chicks hanging out.

ellymayRans ~ Congrats on the beginning of a large hatch!

CCCHICKENS ~ Congrats on eggs from your "mixed heritage" (not mutts!) hens. Btw, we will have to teach some classes at those poultry meetings. First, I need to get Nene's piano ordered!

brown cow ~ Your cows are so cute-- and so happy to have all that straw piled up.

jchny ~ Hope things went well with your Dad at the doctor appointment today.

House Kat ~ Everyone goes through the stage of being in love with their little rooster . . . until it becomes a big roo with a big crow and big plans.

Thanks, They are hoping he will be a candidate for the other surgery. Has to have a cath done to determine what way to go.
Looks like it will be right after thanksgiving.
Happy Tuesday evening everyone! Hope everyone is surviving this grumpy molt time!!!!

Oh it feels like Christmas in November!!! Why you may ask??? Well.... I got my 2014 Meyer Hatchery catalog today!! Oh this catalog is the devil because it has sent my chicken math into overdrive....maybe even borderline obsessed!! Oh well....i guess it's free just to look at the pictures and drool.

I must not pick up the phone....i must not pick up the phone... i must not........

I looked but I was good... really I was! It is still on my desk tho!
This is what I used last year:

I am not crazy about my flat panel heat emitter that I recently tried out because it doesn’t emit much heat and the area where I had to install it isn’t the optimal place. So, I’m going to go back to using a heat emitter ceramic “bulb” like I used last year. I also used the appropriate lamp with ceramic socket. To ensure that the components of the cover, lamp, and clamp didn’t come apart, I connected all parts with wire, which was then wrapped around a rafter (not too close) in the coop. There was plenty of room, so that the coop or a chicken didn’t come in contact with the lamp. I was familiar with that type of lamp/bulb because that’s what we had when we used to have a bearded dragon.
I like the look of them, thought about getting some too. I really don't like the heat lamps.

When little Nene really does play the piano, we'll need to videotape her!

We have a crippled Robin that has learned to whistle "Old MacDonald" and the tune I whistle to call the dogs in. Animals are absolutely amazing.
Wow, that is pretty amazing about the robin! Have you seen the "Earth" episode that features the Lyre bird, which very precisely imitates other birds as well as a chainsaw and camera shutter sound? It's crazy! Here's a clip: World's Weirdest - Bird Mimics Chainsaw, Car Alarm and More ...

My daughter, Lauren, is studying animal behavior at IU and she's the one who sent me info than chickens can be taught to play the piano. My RIR Nene is extra smart (and extra motivated by food!), so I thought she'd be perfect. Here's my favorite pic that I've posted before of crazy Nene.
