INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

ok, thanks. I was try to avoid gels, thought there might be a type of spray. I am going to show, but she can see just fine. we just have troubles keepin her crest dry. No mites or lice problem yet chickens get regular check ups.
CCCHICKENS ~ Aerosol sprays scare me because of fumes and the possibility of spray getting in their eyes, but you could try putting some vegetable oil in a spray bottle.
what about putting a bowl, brick, etc in the middle of thw water dish so they can only drink out of the outer edge and their crests would just hit the middle obsticle you put in the middle? Just a thought
bradselig ~ Wow! You should seriously patent that! It's always the simple, common sense inventions that really sell. Then you should start a Polish hatchery and major marketing campaign to encourage everyone to buy your crested birds so that they'll also want to buy your dish.

Just try to work on that in your spare time.

I don't know what t do... Any advice? Here's my issue: I took in a hen from a friend who wasn't taking proper care of her. I have her. Quarantined in a small store bought coop. Yesterday when I went out to feed Big Momma and Sassy (who by the way is gained most of her strength back and feathers are filling in very well) I called them--"here bitty bitty bitty"-- all of a sudden at my feet is a pretty little hen, a production red I think but very darkly feathered, looking up at me as if to say- ok I'm here what do you feed around this place. I called the two neighbors that I know have chickens, none of them were missing any. So I put her in a small coop (that was not in vry good repair) by herself. This morning I went out to check on all my bitties and when I called t them to come get their grain... There comes a pretty little white hen. She looked like shed been starved!!! Where are these girls coming from and what can I do with them???

Haha how strange! I wonder if someone is dropping them off or did you get hit by the string winds couple weeks ago? I wonder if they "blew away" and settled at your place?

I personal would put the last two that arrived in the same coop together. Give them a week or two and see if either get sick. Your flock has already been exposed to them, so I personally wouldn't worry too much about quarantine.

I didn't let my girls out into contact with them. I scatter their scratch grains through the chicken wire on their run. These two were both outside of the run. My big Momma was exposed t the second one but she's already in a semi quarantined bldg with her sister. I have put the two new girls in separate pens but I don't like the one pen because it's not predator proof. Going t put them together in same coop tonight. If the storms messed up their home where they were and blew them enough to disorient them as to where they belong I might be ahead to post "lost/found" type bulletins. I didn't think of that possibility thank you. Well anyway if they aren't claimed by nxt week I guess I'm stuck with them.

Let me know how it works lol. Might have to give it a try myself!
After I try it I will let you know how it works

I know a lot of people that see someone has chickens and will drop their unwanted chickens off. It is sad that they think they are meaning less property that can just be thrown about. Of course this might not be the case, they may of just got lose and found your place

I'm hoping the person who suggested they might be refugee victims, from the wind storm last week, is right. Also hoping if I post pictures of them up someone will come reclaim them. The first one was half starved and a little weak but after being fed for two days she is in good shape. I just don't have room for more in my coop. At least not right now.

Got a question for everyone regarding shipped eggs. I'd like to get perspective of what you would expect from both the seller's and buyer's point of view.

If you purchased eggs from a seller and shipping ended up taking 7 days to get to you instead of the 2 days USPS stated, would you expect the seller to compensate and if so, what should they offer.

If you were the seller and the shipment took the 7 days to get there instead of the 2, would you offer anything to the buyer and if so what would you offer?

Obviously I'm asking as I am in this pickle as we speak. In my ad, I explained shipped eggs has its risks and I can not be liable for hatch rates due to shipping and incubation issues. Well 2 egg shipments went out last Saturday, expecting them to be delivered on Monday and Tuesday per USPS. Well as of this morning, only one is expected to be delivered today, the other looks like it will be delivered on Monday.

One seller has emailed worried about fertility and frozen eggs, both valid concerns. The other seller has never replied to any of my messages. I honestly don't feel I have to compensate in any way, but before they asked, I offered to reship the 10+ eggs for the cost of shipping and I would add a 72 hr heat pack at no additional cost. I charged $15 for shipping ($10 for shipping, and the rest to cover packing materials, time, and gas to PO). They came back and want me to pay for half the shipping! I double checked shipping price and explained that I'm trying to be far to both of us and ultimately said I would reship for $10.50, that I'd pay half the shipping but they would have to pay for heat pack if they wanted it.

I trying to put myself in their shoes as I know how disappointing it is to get bad eggs, but I also don't want to get taken advantage of. I also contacted my other customer telling them I'd replace their eggs as well for the cost of shipping, but they haven't replied back.

Just curious as to what the others expect if they were in both our places.

If you shipped priority, the PO should have to refund the shipping and the value of the item up to $50. The insurance is one of the big perks of priority in addition to the 2-3 day arrival times.
I now ship (not eggs but other stuff) using priority 95% of the time. It typically ends up being cheaper than first class with insurance. If it is even close to local I use regional rate boxes to get the price down more.

Priority is not a guaranteed delivery date, only priority express is guaranteed. I sent off a claim on the website only to get a generic email response from my "postmaster" apologizing. I typically use regional rate A boxes or the 12x12x8.5 priority boxes. I've found they are sometimes cheaper than the regional rate boxes! I always ship priority but may start offering priority express as well.
