INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We've done a couple Christmas geese. May do another this year. We have always bought ours through Goose The Market in Indy. I don't know of anyone who is currently raising geese to sell.

As far as cooking goes, I'll check with the chef in the family and get back to you on that.
Can you also find out if cooking duck is the same as goose? We're considering changing the drake to hen ratio here, meaning a couple of boys may need to go. Christmas dinner might be a good time for them to make an appearance in the kitchen...

Lol M2H. Yes I have toughened up just a bit. They are so big now, and their little brooder water was freezing every night. The coop waters have heaters. The little ones have been around the flock for awhile now. Today they are in the run with momma with food and water. If I let them out she will take them back to the barn, so they are learning where to stay for awhile. Yes Blueberry and Gus are both in there. They really don't have any interest in the kids. The other hens are more of a concern, but the littles hold their own pretty well now. I went back out last night to check on them, and the little black chick was snuggled up in between Godiva and Peaches on the top roost. The other two were under Lavenders wings on the bottom roost. So I think they will be okay. :)
I have no doubt that you're doing what is best for them. That is so cute that Godiva and Peaches allow a chick to roost/sleep with them. I would have thought that the other hens would treat them like a new addition and want to show their dominance over the chicks.
bradselig ~ I don't know anything about egg shipping, but besides leaving feedback on eBay, it seems like there would be/already is several "shipping hatching egg forums where you could leave feedback to warn others.

Does anybody know if there is anything you can put on polish's head crests to make them waterproof or water resistant? My polish keeps dipping her head in the water and then her feathers get water frozen on them. It wont be a problem when it warms up because I will go back to using the nipple waterers I have but while it is cold enough for water to freeze, I have to use bowls.

I would put Vaseline on them (or even cooking oil-- not spray) and reapply when needed. I put some Vaseline on my hens' combs the other night before they went to bed and they looked much better the next day.

I wasn't meaning her comb. Her comb is virtually nonexistant. I meant her head feathers, afro, crest.

So Lavenders chicks are 7 weeks now and still sleeping under her. So into the big coop they go. They found the top roost. Once Gus and the rest of the flock came in, they got booted to the floor. I'll go out after dark and put them all back on the roosts. They really don't want to be out of the barn. Lavender tries everything she can to escape and high tail it back to the barn brooder with the kids.
Not sure about this one. Definitely a boy, I thought EE x Wyandotte, but I'm not for sure.

Little miss Pickles, next to momma, has a beard! I thought she was pure SLW Now I think she may end up Silver Laced EE?? lol

Lavender, Pickles, Cricket, Raven

They got to be on the top roost, just until the flock was done with dinner. Side note, I think I need aprons for my SLW ladies. Gus only mounts them. He is prejudice.
My "mamma" keeps her chicks under her until about 13 weeks. I just let her decide when she wants to go back to the roost.

This time it was a pleasant surprise that she helped them get their place on the roost for about a week before she ditched them. It was just last week when she quit taking care of them so they've had to make their way on their own now.

I would think your "mamma" would go to the floor with them even in the coop until she's done taking care of them. You may find them down there together!

PS: Finally just getting caught up skimming!

Hey, folks, just checking in while I have some time! Luckily I've been keeping up on posts, so at least I don't have to play catch-up. Coming up on finals here and I've been pretty swamped between the holiday and homework and chickens. I just have to survive two more weeks of class and then I have some weeks off until next semester!

I think my barred Rock, Kate, does a good job at expressing how my week has gone. Ugh!

Hi pipd! So tonight I sifted some of our natural construction sand with a flour sifter and gave it to the 6 and 7 week old silkies. So they can dust bathe.Chance has it figured out. He is lovingly chirping away trying to convince everyone it is safe. Its cute.
