INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Here's a little laugh for ya'll. So after I had to put down the entire flock, I had a rogue chicken. My smartest one, an EE, hid forever. She has finally come back around and we are letting her be for the time being.

We have three 11 week old Aussies at the house yet (who have taken over the chicken yard) and I guess today they were really riled up.

My DM sent me this earlier:

The poor girl sat on that lamp for a good 15 minutes before flying down, even after my DF threw scratch down for her.

She never showed signs of illness, so she could still be a carrier, but my DF feels that he can't cull her after our 23 bird culling. She is now truly our "Pet Chicken."

Happy ThanksGiving everyone!

My mom gave me an early christmas present already lol. I love it! and had to post a pic. She got it from an antique store. I told her I wanted an egg basket gave aa few websites where they make tons of them and she found this antique one, so much cooler.

Cool gift! It would look great in my kitchen, too!

Tons of hatcheries have them. the hardware store in bluffton, only ever gets golden comets. Meyer hatchery has them and they are there number one seller. Some Rural kings, Big Rs (I think), and TSCs get them but not all. You can even make your own.
I think my lack of decent sleep lately has been affecting me -- this also made me laugh! Instructions for making your own chickens: Take a piece of cardstock paper that most closely matches the color of the breed you desire. Draw a picture of your chicken; cut out. Add on feet, beak, etc...... hee-hee!

Thought I'd report an update on my Mom-- ever since her seizure on Sunday she has been in such a good mood and the symptoms of dementia have lessened a bit. Dad (who has a background in social work/mental health) says it reminds him of when electric shock treatments were done on mental patients to change their behaviors, etc. It's almost like the seizure reversed some of the progress of the dementia. We were instead expecting her symptoms to worsen. It's rather amazing and such a welcome break for Dad. Who knows how long this will last for, but we're incredibly thankful for every day that it lasts!

Thanks. lol. That is great that your mom has gotten better! Especially with the holidays being around and such, I'm sure it makes things much more cheerful and easier.

My dad tells me stories about my Great Grandma. She had a miscarraige and it affected her mentally and physically. They thought the shock treatment would make her better. All it did was tramitize her, make her scared to death of hospitals, and make her slightly crazy. She wasn't mentally retarded or anything, but she was an....well camt think of the right word,..... lets say odd character. My dad would tell me stories how she would look towards hartford city and say she can read the courthouse clock which was a good 25-30 miles from her house, said she saw a lion ( really my dads dog), and she always made my dad yellow cakes say they were his favorite. To this day my dad still cant stand yellow cake.Lol If course he didnt tell her that.

All of my chickens are out of the basement now. I had one fail to thrive chick finally pass. I should have culled it but I just emotionally could not. Then I had one chick get in the semi frozen duck pond while I was gone and drown. Not bad results really when I think of how many hatchery chicks I have added to the small layer flock over the past 6 weeks. i was really expecting a lot more piling or suffocation issues.

Now the big integration for the next day or so then to reclaim the brooding pens to use as a rooster pen. The boys won't like it but the growout pen they have been living in is going to become the breeding pen and only 1 rooster will be allowed in there as of Dec 2nd. Each of my other 2 RIR will get their own 4X 8 pen and limited free range time until the little hatchery chicks are older and better able to mingle with the large roosters. For now my Tiny the sumatra rooster is king of the hatchery girls. I still haven't seen him try to mate though.

Tomorrow I work on making a feeding and watering station for all of the chicks. The wet food is ending for about 3 months. It won't be hard to feed dry food but keeping water out there will become much harder as the chicks will need more of it with their dry food.

Anyone lookng for some chicks, these guys are having pretty good deal on chicks. Very limited quantities! Cant beat 10 BBS english orps for $70 shipped!
bradselig-- Black Friday and Cyber Monday even applies to chicken sales! Ha! I noticed you didn't pass this info along until you bought out the Jubilee and Chocolate orps! Haha-- jk.

I wondered why the Buff ones were more expensive until I read their blurb about the English ones being more rare. Learned something new today!
Sally in Indiana ~ My gosh-- Thanksgiving was just over -- I think you need a day of rest before you start your plans of making pens, feeders, waterers, etc. etc.!
kabhyper ~ You have certainly toughened up from your experiences of having two mama hens hatching-- now you tossed the new family in with the big hens and roos! Is Blueberry in there, too? Those chicks are almost as big as their surrogate mom, so I'm sure they'll do fine. I love the Wyandotte/EE mix.
Peaceful Walls ~ That's a wonderful story about your Mom's improvement!

Lol M2H. Yes I have toughened up just a bit. They are so big now, and their little brooder water was freezing every night. The coop waters have heaters. The little ones have been around the flock for awhile now. Today they are in the run with momma with food and water. If I let them out she will take them back to the barn, so they are learning where to stay for awhile. Yes Blueberry and Gus are both in there. They really don't have any interest in the kids. The other hens are more of a concern, but the littles hold their own pretty well now. I went back out last night to check on them, and the little black chick was snuggled up in between Godiva and Peaches on the top roost. The other two were under Lavenders wings on the bottom roost. So I think they will be okay. :)

Got a question for everyone regarding shipped eggs. I'd like to get perspective of what you would expect from both the seller's and buyer's point of view.

If you purchased eggs from a seller and shipping ended up taking 7 days to get to you instead of the 2 days USPS stated, would you expect the seller to compensate and if so, what should they offer.

If you were the seller and the shipment took the 7 days to get there instead of the 2, would you offer anything to the buyer and if so what would you offer?

Obviously I'm asking as I am in this pickle as we speak. In my ad, I explained shipped eggs has its risks and I can not be liable for hatch rates due to shipping and incubation issues. Well 2 egg shipments went out last Saturday, expecting them to be delivered on Monday and Tuesday per USPS. Well as of this morning, only one is expected to be delivered today, the other looks like it will be delivered on Monday.

One seller has emailed worried about fertility and frozen eggs, both valid concerns. The other seller has never replied to any of my messages. I honestly don't feel I have to compensate in any way, but before they asked, I offered to reship the 10+ eggs for the cost of shipping and I would add a 72 hr heat pack at no additional cost. I charged $15 for shipping ($10 for shipping, and the rest to cover packing materials, time, and gas to PO). They came back and want me to pay for half the shipping! I double checked shipping price and explained that I'm trying to be far to both of us and ultimately said I would reship for $10.50, that I'd pay half the shipping but they would have to pay for heat pack if they wanted it.

I trying to put myself in their shoes as I know how disappointing it is to get bad eggs, but I also don't want to get taken advantage of. I also contacted my other customer telling them I'd replace their eggs as well for the cost of shipping, but they haven't replied back.

Just curious as to what the others expect if they were in both our places.

Please excuse me as I'm the "new" guy to this particular forum but let me get this straight... Are people really this shallow & cheap that even though you've made MORE than a generous offer to compensate by sending them a new batch for absolutely nothing more than the cost of shipping, they're still acting like someone wanting a total free ride?!? Granted, the delay in shipping was neither your fault or the buyer's fault, personally I feel as though you've already gone above & beyond!.....just my 2cents ;-)

Personally, I would've offered you shipping & probably threw in a few extra bucks for your time & troubles once again. But hey, I guess that's just the way that I was fetched up ;-)

I greatly appreciate your feedback! Like I said, I've paid some good money for eggs myself and not a one ever developed, so I know how the buyer is feeling. But being in both positions, I feel like my original offer was generous seeing how it was out of my control. We'll see if they take me up on the offer or give me bad feedback! Lol
