INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

And when you switch feeds, it's a good thing to do it gradually - mixing in a little of the new feed at first and increasing it over a few days a little at ta time if you possibly can. Just helps them with the transition. Same when changing feed on your dog.

When I brought one of my girls in last winter (bumblefoot issue) after I was done working with her I would use a hair drier (on low and with my hand to diffuse the heat) and dried her off then put her back outside. I was concerned that the difference in indoor and outdoor temp would be too much to reacclimate her to.

Is she acting sick or droopy at all? Or does she appear her normal self?
Before I brought her in tonight she was hanging out by herself and not really interested in much. After her bath and blow dry and dinner, she seems to be fine. She really liked the mashed up egg. She seems to be perkier now. I really don't want to put her out tonight since it is only 24 degrees outside. Maybe tomorrow when it is sunny I will put her back with the flock. I did transition the feed for about a week, but I wonder if she isn't eating the oyster shell.

I believe she'll eat the oyster shell if she needs it. I don't think I would worry about that part.
Thats good to know. I'm getting about 5 or 6 eggs a day from my 8 girls that lay. So they must be getting calcium. I was really worried about water belly with her, until she layed that partial egg. I would rather her lay a soft egg than have water belly or fatty liver. She is only 9 months old, so I didnt think it was organ problems already.

Well we'll hope that it was just soft shell and nothing left inside! When they're young like that they can have all kinds of strange "getting started" eggs.
She has been laying regularly since early September. I have 2 other SLW hens that are fine. Godiva, my Australorp who is a year old, went through a weird laying thing this summer where she laid only soft eggs for a week, then she consistently laid gigantic 4 and 5 oz eggs every other day until her molt started last month. Now she hasn't been laying anything. Those girls sure can do some strange things.

Patrick ~ I think I recall you posting a blue egg from one of your CL hens. Are you going to set any for the new year's hatch along? I still don't have any eggs worthy of incubating from my RIR so if I do set eggs it would be a very small amount. I'm leaning towards dropping out of the hatch a long. But if you were hatching chicks, then I would set some eggs, just in hopes of having some brooder buddies for any extra females you hatched.
I'm not ready to set eggs yet. My CLs are still in with the rest of the laying flock, where there are also Fayoumi and Polish roosters. I'm working on a new pen just for the legbars, but it isn't ready yet. I'm really excited to get started with them. I think my roo Merlin is shaping up very nicely, hopefully he can give me some fertile eggs when the time comes. I've got three good pullets (not all laying yet) to go with him that look pretty decent too. I also have a pullet that is not colored correctly that will be remaining with the laying flock to give me pretty blue eggs to mix in with my brown, cream, and white eggs. My backup roo however, is definitely not going to be a primary breeder. He is a really good looking boy, but seems to lack the cream genetics. However he has a decent crest and carries the blue egg gene, not something to get rid of without a lot of thought when I don't have better options. I really need to get the camera out again and post some pics.

The plan it to hatch out as many legbar eggs as I can in the spring both to work on improving my stock and also to sell chicks. I'm thinking I won't be setting eggs until late January at the earliest. If I get extra eggs, I'll sell hatching eggs too. You'll be one of the ones at the top of my list to contact when I have everything up and going. I'm also thinking of putting one of my Welsummer girls in there too. That combo would give me olive eggers!

Finally starting to feel normal.
I want to shout a very loud THANK YOU to those of you that sent messages and well wishes.
Very heart warming to know we have so many good friends.
Been a horrible 2 weeks, but am starting to feel normal again.
Have well over 300 posts to read through. Want to say WELCOME to anyone that's joined our thread.
Its been a very expensive lesson learned on calves.
Ribeye, my jersey mix has survived the ordeal and is gaining weight now.
Being out with them day and night, my Dr explained that no matter how careful I was, still exposed to E Coli.
We all have a form of it within us. Its when you introduce from another animal or source you may have a problem.
Challenged my own immune system getting too cold and staying up too long without sleep.
Researching is great, but first hand experience taught me more in 3 weeks than I have learned in a year!
Off to catch up, awesome to be back here with some of my very best friends.
