INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello everyone. Newbies here from the Bedford area with 10 Rhode Island Red hens. We started with 6 pullets this spring (2 of which ended up being roosters & are gone) and then we just adopted 6 more laying hens from friends of ours about 2 weeks ago. So much to learn from this site and I know we've got some questions still too. We've done a bit of experimenting with different ideas along the way so far. Some ideas okay, some not so okay and then some worked out like a champ! So far so good :) Have been doing some reading here at BYC and I'm glad to see so many folks here from the Hoosier state :)

Had to comment on this one..
Anyone that has ever had eggs shipped from you KNOWS your attention to detail, fastidious packaging and shipping.
that said, anyone thats ever bought shipped eggs knows the risks, 50% hatch is the usual max.
I have had a few zero hatch shipments this year, and dealt with some very dishonest sellers.
You are being more than fair, down right generous.

I live in the city of Fort Wayne, IN and I am trying to get a group together to approach the City Counsel about changing the laws. Fort Wayne currently allows zero livestock no questions, no restrictions, just none in city limits. I would greatly appreciate any feedback or guidance.
Thank you!

welcome to our thread and best of luck to you!
One good argument is that the city of indianapolis allows chickens, tell them they need to get with the times!

Because if they didn't, Brad would have 1,000,000 chickens!

I remember the day you got them, and how proud you were.
All losses are sad, but the ones that were unexpected and your favorite pet are always an exceptionally painful experience.

Nite everyone!

Jchny- soooo glad your better. We were all worried about you. You've had such a hard time.

Chicken saddles- I used no sew fleece last spring when some of mine were looking bad. Super easy and cheap. Many colors to choose from and you can make them any size. I made mine about 5-6 inches wide and 5-8 inches long. Cut slits for the wings to go thru and I rounded the edges. Worked great.

Thanks Danand. Unfortunately I don't have any no sew fleece on hand. What I do have are old blue jeans. So my girls are gonna have Blue jean biker jackets. So they can be biker Chicks. (Hehehehe) :D

Jchny ~ good to see you are back. I pray your health continues to improve. Sorry about the calves. Someday when I start looking for a pair of goats, I'm sure I'll run into something similar. For now I just keep reading trying to learn all about the setup needed and the breed I want, Nubian.

How early do ducks typically lay? I went out in the pre-dawn hours today to try and get eggs before they were frozen. Nope the ducks still won and the eggs were frozen to the point of cracked shells. The water in the coop was barely glazed over with ice so I thought there was hope. The lights had been on for about 15 minutes in the coop other than the red heat lamps that were on the water. I'm enjoying the duck eggs and more ducks are not out of the picture but I need to get those eggs before they freeze. I thought of putting a heat light on the spot where they lay but it is not the same spot for more than a couple of days. It seems like as soon as the ducks pick a spot the younger pullets start moving in on it, like a battle scene and it becomes the pullet sleeping area. Still during the day those 2 ducks rule the coop and run. They even herded my RIR roos around the run when I let them mingle yesterday.

   I confess, i have erm... well, a few... ok a LOT of brads birds too :D
The Tolbunt roo from brad is absolutely the most striking rooster I have ever laid eyes on.
What a sweet roo too, he loves to snooze on my Dads lap.
Dad is just totally amazed with him. Guess he is Dads now
Oh no...uh huh...not you too!!! (Going to hide in the closet and pout) I feel SOOOOO left out! I can't even run to "Momma" and tattle...lol...she took sides! Whaaaaa

Hope everyone is staying warm and healthy! It's cold enough to freeze th (whatever's) off a brass monkey here today. Had to rake more bedding into the coop and put straw down in the run for the girls this morning. Checked toes and combs for frostbite. Alls well if your a polar bear! Brrrrrrrrr!

I opened the coop this morning to find Cricket lying on the floor, alone. She must have fallen off the perches last night and gotten too cold without any feathers on her, or even the other hens' warmth around her. She's gone. She's just gone. I don't know what to think. If I had brought her in last night, she would probably still be here. I'm just devastated.

She was my perpetual stink-eye bird. She was also the only hen that loved to go camping. I don't even want to think about camping out next summer without her here. It's been a tough year for me as far as losses, and now I'm completely heartbroken again.

I have a few birds from Brad. that is sweet hat he sleeps in your dads lap. My dad was the only one ever really interested in the chickens. His favorite girl was milkieway (easter egger)that was killed, I think it was last spring. At the show Ibought a lot of chickens, two of which were a bearded buff laced polish and a mille fleur d'uccle. My mom instantly loved the polish, named her alfie, and let her perch on her arm! My mom and grandma used to say birds were dirty, that is why I was sosurprised she let her perch on her. The other day alfie layed her first egg and she said "her" girl was growing up lol. The other day she asked me if Iwas goingto breed her, I told her no andshe asked why. I said because I didnt have a rooster for her, she said I should get one. She has never incouraged my chicken problem lol. And my step dad really likes the D'uccle, lets her perch on him. But he doesnt see her as much as mom see alfie. The d'uccle is epileptic, shes the one with her own condo. She never goes on the ground. And I realized the only time she has ever had a seizzure is when she was sitting on the ground. but she hasnt ha one for over 5 weeks. My dad is still involved the most though
