INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'm still too far south for you. it would be a 3-4 hour trip depending on weather if you are as far north as Indiana Beach. I am getting production chicks in in January to grow out and sell along the way. The selling helps pay for feed and such.
I'm sure someone much closer to you would want some and split an order. It is my understanding that there is a heat pack or enough chicks to stay warm. Still I'll be planning on picking them up a PO prior to their arrival at my tiny local late to open PO. Shoot if I knew where in Indy they would be, I would pick them up another stop earlier.
If you can't find someone, maybe make a day trip down here and stop off at the zoo or museum so at least the drive is not just for chickens. I would not mind splitting off some of my order with you.

Thanks for the offer! We're pretty far north here -- about 20 minutes from the IN/MI state border, although it's a straight shot up from you. I need to decide how many new birds I'll want total. I think a minimum of a dozen, possibly 2 dozen.

I got a few pictures of my Black Rose Comb bantams. The guy i got them from said when you think they are ready to show or are grow, wait two months then they will be ready. So I think the two months starts now. I am going to work on getting better pictures, they are slightly crazy, they fly all over the place and are hard to catch. I will have to start working with them a lot.

Cockerel

pullet

And one of the white rock pullets.

White rock cockerel, my new buddy lol.He is all leg, he has got lots of filling out to do. He is so sweet. I think it is the breed (i never owned any variety of plymouth rocks until this year) everyone of them is sweet (except for my hatchery barred rock, but many hatchery birds have aggression problems). I was out in the barn for hours today and the hens are warming up to me.

I finally got my first egg from one of my OEGBs. I saw the egg as I was walking past, backed up and looked again. there combs have been red forever, I figured they wouldn't lay until spring. It is a pretty tiny egg, but considering the size of chicken it came out of, it is actually a pretty big.

And today 3 pullets graduated to a big girl pen. So far the everyone gets along fine. I put them in a pen where all the birds are very calm and shy, they don't really have a pecking order. One of the new pullets, seems to think she rules the roost now, we will see how long that lasts.

Yesterday when I was out in the barn and walked in just in time to see my two LF ameraucana cockerels flaring neck feathers. I watched them, all they did was flare their neck feathers, but the blue one back down! This came as a shock to me, because the black always seemed very submissive. He is also blind in one eye so it made since that he would be at the bottom. Well I guess not, My one eyed cockerel is now head the head guy in his pen.

Hope goodb is doing better after the loss of his RIR.

I've been wondering about them, too. Maybe the holidays have kept them too busy for the boards.
December was a very busy month for me at work. The good news is that I passed my certification test when I was in DC, so the investment away from home was worthwhile.
I'm hoping my life slows back to normal in January.
Thats awesome news!! Congrats!

I got my first American Bresse pullet egg tonight! I'm pretty impressed with these birds. At 19 weeks, they are big and active, with huge red combs, nice thick white feathers and pretty blue legs. The next time I'm home during the daytime, I'll try to get some pictures to post on here.

Dying to see them, I have read some about them and am very curious!

I received the latest issue of Consumer Reports in the mail today:

The article can be seen here: Chicken Safety | Chicken Contamination - Consumer Reports

I happened to make chicken soup this evening using "Smart Chicken," which apparently isn't so smart after all!

This is from page 4 of their report:
Its going to get even more complicated if the big chains get their way...
I am almost afraid to eat out at all anymore. Who knows what you are really eating!
Quote: I sent you a pm also.
Wow what a day! Went to lunch today and noticed car was acting funny. After doing my errands I pulled into work and pipped my hood. Water pump was leaking! My dad and brother are typically my mechanics, so thankfully my brother was free tonight to haul my car back and put in new water pump. Don't have to borrow parents vehicle now! I'm just glad if happened today and not yesterday when Curtis and I went to pick up the chickens!
Yikes! That was pure luck! I have had one go out while driving, scary stuff!

To prove my claim. Here is Lucy the lab. Often a victim of these silly whims.

A little meme of my kitty Hero.
Yes, I have an odd fascination with putting objects on my pets' heads.

Very nice looking birds! I have some boys sparring now too, I do not intervene unless it gets serious, its all part of it!
They have to decide the pecking order on their own. If I see blood its time to stop it quick.
I am very impressed with the size egg my OEGB lays, I would love to hatch several more just like her.
They are just a sweet friendly bird.

Thanks! I was glad to see all they did was flare neck feathers, I just watch to make sure it no one gets hurt. It was a small egg, but not in terms of the size of bird it came out of, that egg can match the size of my salmon favorolle bantams egg. They are sweet little birds.
