Thanks. I'm going to see if I can't go and stop by BigR and TSC and RuralKing and see what they have. Could you if you wanted to add an egg turner to an incubator if it doesn't come with one installed? I'm alright if it can't I am home enough to turn and be there to 'babysit' if needed but I may get one just so it could be possibly easier.

I suppose I'm a little lazy sometimes. Lol

Yes you can add one. They have ones that have them installed and are crculated air, of the same brand, but they are double the price. I just turn ine when I wake up and before I go to bed.

I've been told that the Hovabater 1588 is the best small one by LOTs of people that hatch all the time. I have never used any so I'm just passing on what I've been encouraged to buy by the experienced.

Alright, Thanks. That's very helpful. I'll see if I can't go to the stores sometime this week. I should be getting a brooder from my grandpa when he cleans out his barn. I'll have to adjust it a bit I think because it was made for quail he said. But that means I'll be set to get eggs and I'm dying to do a couple of experimental hatches with my EEs just because I'm curious and love their coloration.

I use Little Giants and a homemade cabinet. I have the turners for them and used an old PC fan wired to an old cell phone charger. So I can use them as forced air or still air. I like incubating with forced air but hatching with still air.

The little giants work but the key is to have stable room temps. If the room temp varies too much you will not have good luck with the LG. If I wanted a good smaller incubator, I would get the hovabator genesis 1588 or the brinsea eco 20. Both these I am not aware are sold in farm stores. Have to order them. Rural king has them on their website. I have only ever seen little giants and the farmers innovation brands locally between big r, rural king, tsc, and orschelns.

So, I'm just curious, what types of 'bators do you all use? I'm trying to find a relatively inexpensive but good incubator but I was just wondering if any of you have any preferences in brands and types. I would make a homemade one but we did that and it didn't really give good results. Id like one with an auto-egg turner but I suppose I can do without but I do need one with a reliable and consistent humidity/temp range.

Im soo ready for green now. I'm getting done with all of this cold and snow.

I recommend buying a turner for which ever bator you decide to go with. The turner helps temps stay constant since the bator is not getting opened 3 times a day or more.
I prefer the genesis 1588 with the 1611 turner because the room temps can flux by a degree or two and it is not a problem. I use my LG 9200 still air for hatching but I am checking temps quite frequently the days of lockdown. Temps and humidity are harder to maintain in the still air. Humidity can be hard this time of year with the house's heater running so much.

On the same lines - I got 9 eggs yesterday!! My previous record was 7. Just shows you what 30 hens of laying age can do when they put their minds to it. Lol. They are probably exhausted now and I'll only get an egg or two today.

While getting ready for work I hear banging in the garage. Go out and find two silkie roos going at it! I get them seperated and notice bloodbon the ones beak. It looks like he has broken his top beak! I didnt have time to clean them or dry them (they ended up in the water dish several times). So i have the one with the broken beak in a temp cage in the house.

The tip of the beak is still attached to the rest of the beak. Do I need to cut it all the way off if its still attached when I get home?

Oh No, hope he will be ok. I trim beaks with toenail clippers. does a cleaner job then dog clippers

I am taking a short break from moving the chicks to another bedroom because my DH is on the way home from IU with our DD, Lauren, who is very ill. The chicks were in her bedroom. As "Murphy's Law" would have it, last night DH and I started moving my office from Meredith's former bedroom to Max's larger former bedroom. Now I'm moving the chicks into my former office, which is still in the process of being moved! Oh well, I can handle that . . . I'll have to assess Lauren when she gets home. I mentioned before that she's been chronically ill since she had mono a few years ago because an infectious disease specialist found that she still has the Epstein-Barr virus in her system. Might be a few years before it's under control. Could be much worse, though.

I incubate in a sportman and love it, but then I move them to a Genesis 1588 to hatch. I also hatch my goose and duck eggs in the Genesis.

got a second egg from my barnyard mix hen. It took her 30 weeks to lay the first egg but at least she has laid twice in a row now.

I don't believe in groundhog day either.....I just got 6 eggs from the girls that had only been laying 2, spring is on it's way!
