INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well as promised...Introducing our newest family members!!!!!! They are lavender muscovy ducks courtesy of LAM!! They are sooooo gorgeous!!!

Here's all three!
Here is one of my hens thinking it's appropriate to go full body into the drinking water!!!! The drake was definitely having a nice time drinking and cleaning and he even started wagging his tail!!!. But one thing is for sure, he is really, really bossy!!!!!!!! (I might name him 'John' after my FIL because he is really bossy and some people don't like him--my DBF thought that was funny)
Another group shot! I am really fond of the hen in the back because she is mostly white on her neck and breast and then lavender coloring on the rest of her body. Just watching them for 10 minutes, I have learned that she is the low man on the totem pole.Yes, those are water droplets on the drake's back because he was flinging water every where. I can't wait to continue to watch them and learn more about them!!!!

M2H Thanks for the info, yes I found a lot of the same info listed. Her crop was down a little this morning. Not much though. I did feed her some fermented food, no seeds though. She upset I won't feed her more! I'm afraid to give her too much, crop is huge and squishy. I did read on a thread about monistat 3. I have bought it and given one dose. We shall see if it works. She acting normal, walking digging in the bedding looking for feed im guessing. Talking up a storm. Poop is normal. Just a huge crop. So my plan today is watch, massage her crop several times and maybe a tsp of ff no seed 3-4 today.

I have read about making a chicken vomit. Not sure I like that, there's a chance she can aspirate if it gets in her lungs and die. I pretty much have decided against that.

Thanks for the info!

Deb
hogster ~ Hope she improves! You probably already read this, but here's some more info: Answers from The Chicken Vet on Impacted, Sour & Pendulous Crops
Re Starling Distress calls
Ok so those are all interesting ideas but if they are distress calls, would they stress out the chickens too?
CRSelvey ~ From what I've read, chickens tune out distress calls that don't affect them. (kinda like tuning out bickering kids or people complaining--ha

) If chickens responded to distress calls from every bird, they probably would be nervous wrecks. I'm guessing that chickens would tune out a repetitive call (just like starlings do--lol). When I get a chance this week, I'll make a test recording to see what happens. As I mentioned, we haven't had any starlings near our coop, but there often are around eight at a time at the suet feeder that's supposed to be for the woodpeckers. I'm going to get a domed suet feeder this week. I know everyone else's starling experiences are much worse than mine. I'm certainly not advocating for recordings or any particular method; I just became curious and wanted to find out more about them. After finding out more about them, I can't wait until I can get the hose out and attempt to sanitize the area. I shoveled the thick ice off of the deck and walk for the chickens' benefit, but a few hours later we had a couple inches of fresh snow. I quickly swept that powdery stuff off so I could put down the tarps before the snow got worse. It's so nice after the snow is over to be able to pull back the tarps so the chickens don't freak out about walking on that cold, white stuff.

chick rookie~ I like the way you made a snow-free zone outside of your coop. In the summertime, we put a large patio umbrella outside of their coop for added shade, but we need some kind of tent room thingy like you have that has a roof and sides to block wind.
Backyard Bitten ~ Glad to hear you had a successful and fun weekend with fellow BYCers! What the heck is jchny doing wheeling and dealing with animals while tending to her ill brother and everything else?!? lol

Loved the photos! I like their color combos-- the red is a nice accent color with the lavender and white.

My big brother is walking! Jack is off most of the tubes, just IVs now!!
He is trying so hard. We were there off and on today. let him doze and quietly chatted.
They say he may go home Tuesday. Wow things have sure changed.
He is still very pale. But still a stinker too, and was cracking jokes.
I am so relieved. This is the 2ND family member to go thru this surgery.
horrible pain, I would not wish anyone to endure it. The heart hospital in Castleton/Indy is impressive.

Was able to meet up with backyardbitten between visits. I am so grateful she was able to drop off the scovies.
We both realized we know each other from our campground too. Small world! Hoping we can work on the owner for a chickenfest!
I am so amazed at these scovys, they are gorgeous and so calm for the breed! Thanks to LAM for the offer. I want more!
One hen got away from me, and came right back when everyone had left and things got quiet outside.
She went to the carrier I left outside and climbed right in! She ran out when she saw me, but was able to net her and get in her in.
They are in our porch tonight. DH thinks they need a new covered run, he loves the black drake.
Yea he has the disease too...he was holding the drake telling him its "ok" he gets another hen now

bradselig ~ Congrats on your modern game chick! It reminds me of my huge long-legged blue/black Eng Orp chick from Kiniska who is brooding with a splash Eng Orp and your three silkies. (They're all doing great, btw!)

ChickCrazed~ Sorry you've had such a rough time! When you're sick, it's hard to cope with anything-- and it's so much worse when you have to deal with the miserable weather! Hang in there and try not to wear yourself out. That's great news about your egg increase-- your photo is so pretty.

to her and adorable family! And she knows my brother jack too LOL.
Its been pretty amazing that we had already met a few years ago camping. Its a family oriented place with a large barn for gatherings.
Both of us are going to work on the owner there for the next chickenfest!
Jack has so many people visiting I am kind of limiting it.. He is very social. So when we go there. he NAPS! NO EXCUSES!
I will post pics too, DH wants to get the scovies a new coop and run. He is very impressed with the colors and personality. Loves the black Drake!
LAM has some pretty impressive birds. I am really excited to add the new scovies to my flock here.

My first modern chick! Look at those legs! Lol
They are so cute with their long legs !!

the tail waggin is why my daughter says they are half dog !. Hen in back is what she calls helmet heads, they are her favorites, I still can't believe she let that one go!! Have fun with them, they are the best breed of ducks ever !!!!

Love these. I saw them when I visited LAM last year. I have decided that when I am ready to get ducks, my first will be Muscovy's!
