INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hi M2H! Happy you made it back ok. I was looking these up to post to you when I saw someone else also uses them. We have hardwood floors and it's hard to roll around on the floor with the kids without these pads (of course ours are the more brightly colored ones from the toy isle but you get the idea. http://www.target.com/p/comfort-foa...sku=11539345&gclid=CO6p7oPI3rwCFRRo7AodIWQABw Maybe your chicks are just hippes at heart making their own commune. They can chat while they work ;)
good morning everyone how is everybody on this coldish windy day :D
Animallover- good morning, afternoon, and evening to you too! Today was a much better day around here. While uninterrupted sleep is still too much to hope for, the day was much improved. All three kids were back to school finally, the dog is healing, cat finished her medicine and weird rash is healed, AND, my chickens all went outside for the first time since snow came. It geeks like it's been forever! I only have 9 now but 8 at once were out getting muddy. Even though they were a bit messy, it was a joy to watch. I took pics of them doing nothing exciting and had a great time! I wish my cold would go away but that would just be greedy after all this wonderful sunshine and no tornados. Here is a pic from today:

Just ignore any of the mess that was covered in snow all winter. I'll pick it up as soon as it drys out out there. Also, we have to get a new riding lawn mower. We used to have a troybuilt but it just wasn't sturdy enough for our terrain. I had it at the shop all the time for one thing or another. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Ok everyone knows I'm headed your way next week, but what you don't know is the eggs in my bator (including Kabs Silkies!!!!) will hatch the day before. I want to keep about six of this batch but will have about 8 to go...anyone interested? Some of these are not from Kab though, they are from a casual friend here in WV.

minmin what breed are the extra chicks???

All are Silkies... The friends hen was a splash.

Ok so I'm hooked on EE'ers lol. The two chicks I got have the most character out all the other chicks. I have to ask does anyone have any EE'er chicks they would like to part with I think I'm gonna need a few more running around the house!!

Patrick has some close to 6 or 7 weeks old and I have some that are approaching 2 weeks but both of us are not that close to you.

Those bitties are adorable! I soooo love babies! Glad your DH is doing well. Have you tried putting Seran wrap around his wound and tape it... He could shower then at least. After working in nursing homes, having clutzy kids and being a medic I've learned to improvise! The wrap will slide off if it's not taped good though. I'm sure if you have kids you probably already knew that trick but figured I'd putu 2 cents in just in case. Lol
I have kids but never thought of that will try it, it would be great if he could take a shower instead of pan bathing...

Can you link where you saw the other chicks? I googled welsummer chicks and they look like yours, to me!
I cant link, but I can save pic's ... hope I dont get into some kind of trouble ..

My son got a large settlement last year, went out and paid cash for a top of the line John Deere. The rear end went out on it after three months. It's bn in the shop since Sept 17 or 18th? They STILL don't have it fixed, saying it wasn't covered in the bumper to bumper extended warranty nor the 1yr parts n labor... If it's not covered...WHAT IS? Won't buy another one!

I would recommend cub cadets. Ever since I was a little kid, we had one. My dad loved that thing, took incredible care of it. When my parents got divorced,my mom got the lawn mower. It didn't get the care it should of and sat out in the weather for awhile, but that thing is still holding on. The only problem we ever had was a belt issue last summer, they just keep snapping, but I think they put the wrong size on or something. My dad has always told me if that lawn mower would of been cared for properly all the time, it could of been passed on to me. He really liked that mower lol. I don't know what model it is, but the brand itself is pretty reliable in my opinion. BTW pretty chickens and your yard doesn't look bad at all. Someone should see my barn floor, the walkways flooded a little

(Missing BA hen) It has been two days so I'm not feeling very hopeful.
HouseKat ~ I'm sorry to hear that! Was she free ranging or was it at night?

SallyinIndiana posted a great idea on page 2255 of using thick cardboard lined with plastic. If I had it to do over, I'd probably take the time to make that floor covering, but I'll probably take the lazy way out and buy some foam squares.

chick rookie ~ the one in front is a Silver Laced Wyandotte.
Haha I think they're just hard-headed!
ChickCrazed~ That would really tick them off if I moved the plastic box! They don't like when things are moved around without their approval first.

I need to make some curtains for the nesting boxes in the coop although they don't seem to care about privacy! lol
You are much smarter for not letting your chicks loose!! You give them an inch, and they take a mile!! lol I especially regret letting them dust bathe in that room because it's going to be so much work to clean that room when the chicks move out.

Consumer Reports says: Think twice about zero-turn riders if you're property is hilly. Rear-steering wheels give zero-turn-radius riders their tight turns but make them difficult to control on steep slopes. Exceptions include mowers that have steerable front wheels and steering wheels instead of the usual levers--though a relatively high repair rate in our brand-repair surveys has kept some models off our list of top picks.

minmin ~ That is so true! Since having chickens and belonging to this thread, I'm much more aware of things that can be reused or repurposed. When I drive to Bloomington to see my daughter, I always notice all of the barns and other structures that were abandoned when the new I-69 was built. I assume that the State must own them now. There are some really cool barns and if nothing else, the wood could be used. When the highway ends at Crane, and I drive through the winding country and through little towns, I pass many other abandoned barns, homes, and other structures that just sit there deteriorating. It's too bad that owners don't list the structures or building materials on Craigslist instead of letting them waste away.

I wish we could all get together on a coop fixit-upper idea. Its really hard to tackle a project alone. Everything I have put up here for the livestock/poultry was 90% me and some help from the DDs/Their SOs/DH. I am the only one that's retired, so I just work it all in as I can. Having support to make a project happen is always more fun!
If we had a group that helped each other, it would be so amazing and easy! My biggest challenge is extra hands to hold up, lifting in place, brainstorming...
When we raised the barn here, we had several friends, neighbors and family over. We had just moved here a few months prior, and it was so much fun meeting everyone. We offered all the food. Steaks, fish fry, BBQ chicken, corn on the cob and lots of other goodies.. It was SOO much fun, and we have helped others locally since then.
I met some of the local people and made a lot of great friends that weekend too. I would certainly volunteer for a work co-op, I love helping out.
jchny~ I am re-reading what I missed when I was out of town. You can count me in on whatever project we're going to pitch in on. I suggest helping to finish the rest of I-69 to Bloomington! haha But seriously, that sounds like a great idea that benefits everyone by feeling useful, appreciated, and accomplishing a goal together! Maybe we could form an organization to find out who owns those abandoned barns (and other potential chicken coops galore!) that I described in my post to minmin.
