INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote: I would have filled it in too! The risk for the kids alone is too much. Salt water would probably not be safe for your geese.
We had a nice, long free range day yesterday, and got a lot of coop cleaning done finally too.
Ducks and geese are sure "lively"!

Hoping the geese will lay soon, at least I know the eggs should be fertile

Needing some ideas on good egg production brown egg layers for our indiana winters. Wanting to get into a breed that I can use solely to sell eggs for. Everyone seems to like brown eggs best. Any ideas?
My Black Australorps are fantastic layers.I don't use artificial lighting, but they were filling my fridge to overflowing!
All my girls slowed down late November. I really thought about lights, but decided against it.

UPDATE on my EE hen MJ. she must be feeling a little bit better cause she is fighting me now, and she even gave me an egg, what a trooper I told her she didn't have to do that. She needs to conserve her energy.... but ... her eye was a real mess but the rest of her scratches and scrapes look a bit better. her beek is still messed up but its only been a day, not even a full day yet. Going to cook her up some runny oats and see if I can get her interested in a noodle worm... and maybe a scrambled egg mushed up real fine.
I think it may be the infection but she really stinks, real bad, thought I was gonna lose my breakfast. is that normal?

I feel like I've complete the first half of the Oregon Trail... I'm officially home, from traveling to @bradselig's, with a slew of birds. Somehow I ended up with 5 extra birds... How did that happen??? Then I stopped at the Muncie RK.... They just happened to have SLW, so I was suckered into their 6 chick minimum. Their "chick tanks" looked really good, nice and clean and full.
So on to the good stuff, chick pics!!!

The SLW were in with black australorps, so did I pick the right baby chicks?

Side note: Why do my photos look so downgraded when I load them on here? I feel like it makes them look really blurry...
ETA, they're not as blurry when I click on them, so nevermind!

I'm betting the first is an old English and the others are seabrights. Cute little guys!

I will have to try this. I haven't seen a mouse in awhile, in the barn anyways. I have never seen a rat, but who's to say they aren't around and I just don't know it.
I am glad you have some one hand, but sad to hear about the calf. Good luck with your chicken
it works with many small critters. was told it works on opossum too..
got the calf from an auction and knew he may not make it the farmers don't care if they get that first milk stuff they need to live, I know what it is I just cant spell it...lol don't make it any easier. I have only lost 2 out of the 6 I have taken in.

lilmizscareall~ They are all so cute, but why do you have mystery ones? Did they hand you brown paper bags with question marks on them?! lol
I am wondering about this: Humans are not supposed to eat raw ground meat because it can contain E. coli, so it seems that the risk same would apply to chickens. Other raw meat would probably not pose a risk, but ground meat could be contaminated.

chick rookie: The remedy guide I posted with the eye wash info also has directions for using aspirin for pain.
mystery chicks... that would drive me nuts... but be fun at the same time... I know I make no since.. lol
my grandmother always feed it and I guess I am just following in her footsteps... lol cant remember her having any problems, and I haven't yet..
I seen the Aspirin part and used it last night and this morning.

I got a few pictures the other day.

my Golden Comets have been great, no matter the weather I always get lg brown eggs.

@Mother2Hens lol, they were labeled assorted bantams! So, I just had to choose based on their patterns without knowing what I was going to get.
again would drive me nuts while having fun guessing at the same time. lol

I will be picking up a few more little babys tomorrow. My TSC will be getting there chicks in.

ive heard of this "chicken math" but not sure how it works. Am I on the right track with it so far lol.
5- red sex links
8- GLW chicks
2- SLW chicks + whatever we get out of our April incubating
2- black Australorps
2- EE'rs
8- Birchen Marans incubating
7- BR incubating
7- RIR incubating
This is what we have so far, hoping for good hatching's. Looking to pick up a few more EE'rs or maybe Australorps.
anyone think of any other colorful breeds that would go good with this beautiful flock of layers?
Or has anyone found a cure or treatment for Chick days at the local feed stores lol!!

Now that I might know what they are, it's slightly anticlimactic. Anyone want these old englishes??? Jk!
