INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

To the new peeps with thread issues, we have all dealt with it, and it does suck.

I will tell you though, that more often than not, the people on here are very nice. I have found that the trick is to lurk around the threads you are interested in for awhile.

Read individual posts and get a feel for personalities. Find someone who has been on here for a long time, who seems nice and helpful, and private message them a question.

If you can find a few people, who are knowledgeable, and nice, you can start posting on the threads and have conversations with the nice ones. That way if some idiots come on being all full of themselves, you can ignore it, and you will see they don't get a whole lot of responses from the more experienced breeders/posters.
I had some bad experiences when I first signed on BYC.

I didn't know anything, and just wanted advice from people in the know. I got a lot of responses that were blatantly trying to make me feel dumb. Keyboard warriors, who think they can say whatever they want to you about your birds because you are online and not face to face.

So I sought out the nice ones, who knew what they were talking about. Real breeders, who have the nicest birds, don't need to be rude to get their point across. They have nothing to prove, because they already have the right way by learning like the rest of us, not by berating newbies and acting cocky and thinking they are the end all of knowledge of poultry.

and realize these people are probably sitting at home in their underwear, covered in cheetos dust

with no real friends to speak of, because they are mean lonely people. They are the minority.

The Indiana thread is awesome, and I think a lot of these other breed and state threads could learn a lot from it and the wonderful people on it.

oh kab, this made me laugh! but you have a point!! People who go out of their way to be rude and unkind to other people for no reason at all are generally losers IMO.

So i have some great news fellow Hoosier BYCers!! I have finally joined the ranks of owning an incubator!! But i also need to give a BIG THANKS to JCHNY!!! Thanks for responding to my PMs and helping me out!!

I would also like to quote Racinchickens as well, as i too "suddenly have quail!" lol but mine are eggs and they will be my first incubator project!!! Thanks JCHNY for the quail eggs!!!

Got the 'bator set up and it's going,so just gonna wait until tomorrow evening for the full 24 hrs then put them in there. I'm excited and nervous at the same time!!! wwooohoooo!!!

I am sorry for my inexperience with your forum. I pulled this up in a search and have been reading for hours. You have a wonderful forum, full of information!

Does anyone in Northern IN know where I can buy/trade quail? I breed Coturnix, and am looking to add several new bloodlines to my flock. I currently have around 40 adults, 5 1-day olds, and a few dozen in the incubator. I have Tibetans, Rosettas, Italians, and Jumbos. I am looking for either fertile eggs or young birds. I am willing to buy or trade.

I am also looking to increase my chicken flock (have around 70). Does anyone know who sells Frizzles in Indiana? I specialize in Araucana and Barred Rock, and could trade fertile eggs or pay for eggs. We are also looking to get into some meat birds this year. Does anyone know where to buy broilers inexpensively?

Thank you so much for your help!!!

Hi Jenibob - I raise Coturnix quail, also. I culled my flock for winter and lost a couple during the polar vortex, so I'm planning on ordering some eggs in about a week or so - probably am going to start with 50-100 eggs in the incubator to begin with ... I will order either Italian or a variety. If you're still looking for new genes to add in a couple of months, send me a message. I'm in the Anderson area.

Wow - this thread is REALLY active! What a great online community to be a part of - I have had a great deal of fun scrolling through the posts from the last week or so, trying to catch up - just loving all of the spring-is-here-and-so-are-chicks photos being posted and getting a kick out of how many posts I've seen along the lines of, "I just dropped by [insert name of store] and got a bunch of chicks, but didn't mean to!" Been there, done that - LOL!!!

My hubby and I spent yesterday cleaning out the chicken shed, rearranging and beginning the work to do some renovations. We're expanding the chicken area this year. One of the things we're doing is converting a large display case into a double-decker brooder. I think that chicken people go to yard sales with re-purposing glasses on. :) I enjoy the photos being posted of coops and coop renovations.

We're also picking up two pygmy goats this week - they are does that are almost two years old and ready to breed, so I'll need to track down a suitable buck. I noticed several other folks in this thread who have goats. How do they get along with your chickens?

I'm trying to get in weekly photos of my Jaerhons' development. Here they are at three weeks:

I'll be breaking out my incubators in about a week. I'm looking forward to starting with a bunch of quail eggs, plus I'll probably put a few Serama eggs in there, too.

Spring is finally here, y'all! YAY!

Oh, you are in for it, now! When I got my first incubator, it was running constantly for the next six or seven months! I became a compulsive hatcher - hatching and raising over 100 birds in my first year! Have fun!!!

Ok so crazy hatching lady is still up at 3am because day 21 and I have approx 4 of 30 ish finally with external pips! I hate though that I put a small basket over 6 eggs to keep them separate because of being different breeds but of course I hear peeping but can't see them! Driving me batty!! First time doing this!
