The rich peeps who purchased it from our local feed stores catalog (sight unseen) were dissatisfied with it after it arrived. I happened t b there when they went in to pick it up on Saturday. The feed store employees had assembled it for them and I was saying how it would b nice for a grow out pen for my chicks. When I was told it was sold, I told them it didn't matter because I wouldn't b able to afford something like that anyway. The owners decided to go back t the catalogs, found a much larger one t purchase and told the stores owner to give it to that nice lady who was admiring it...lol that would be ME! Yippee!!! Yappee!!! Yahooo ooo eee! THANK YOU RICH PEOPLE (who have enough money to share with others!!!) my bitties will b enjoying it as soon as I can find a pickup truck to get it home.
I thank every who gave me advice about my day old hatched chick with a walking issue, the poly-vi-sol worked immediately the chick is acting as normal as the rest of them it's balance is normal and it's hard to tell witch one had the issue!!!! Thank you thank you!
It's great to hear about both of these things -- we need to keep posting all of our positives so all the struggles don't seem so overwhelming! Kinda coincidentally, but I keep having a line from Charlie Bucket's "Think Positive" song from the Willy Wonka musical (which ended yesterday & was a great show!) running through my head, "Whenever I'm feeling down & out & don't know what to do, I think positive." :thumbsup On a greatly positive note, northern Indiana should hit 50 degrees tomorrow!! I took the advice of letting my broody hen hatch her babies out in the cold barn & they've done great, even with the cold this past week, but I'm sure they're going to love the warmer weather that's finally coming.:jumpy
We got 5" of snow overnight... So needless t say Blinky and Waddles(new name for Armelia according to my 2 yr old granddaughter) won't be out today and neither will Diamond nor Earl! Poor babies would have t build a tunnel! Lol

Have a couple pics to post from the nice weather last week. First the silkies (from Brad) they're about 7 weeks old.

These pics were last week, their heads puffs are bigger already than this.

This one is a mix from my layer flock, BO rooster with BA hen. I think the coloring is kind of cool but unfortunately he's looking like a boy. I don't have room for another rooster.

And last, a couple from my first CCL hatch (thanks Racinchickins) Out of ten eggs I had seven hatch. 5 boys and 2 girls.

Pretty easy to tell the boys from girls after they dry off.

CRS : dont give up hope - we had a chicken that we figured would never lay an egg, but finally did a couple weeks ago . . . . so hopefully soon for you

YOU WERE SO RIGHT!!

I never thought that Sweetie would lay and egg because she is my Appenzeller Spitzhauben that has Marek's but recovered from a bout of the illness. Most chickens do not, but she did. They said she probably would not lay eggs and this gorgeous white egg in the middle is her first egg! If I had not had the testing done at Perdue on Lucy, I would not be sure that is what she had, but I am. We have to be much more careful with biosecurity here now, but that's ok and I can work with it. She was supposed to die around 20 weeks from tumors, but so far she's fine. I am just thrilled!

Also, on to other happy topics, the chicks are doing great and we are being super careful to keep everything separate from the other chickens. I have adopted coop shoes, so they are all I wear to go to the big coop. The Virkon S arrived, so I have started washing everything down with it that my other chickens have touched or been near (except the actual coop for now). We are also looking into one of those cute little tractors for them to live in outside in another part of the yard (far from the actual coop) until they are at least ten or more weeks old. Once they are older with better immune systems, I can start merging them with the big kids. I know there may be loss, but I'm doing my best to keep them healthy.

And finally, I packed up my mean roo, Peanut Butter and took him to my friend's house for their dinner. After I got home my friend said she had an incubator I could use if I wanted to hatch my own eggs. That sounded really good but apparently mean roos breed mean chicks (just from reading) so its probably best that I don't even try. Also because it sounds so challenging and my coop is close enough to full assuming my chicks all make it

. I'm planning for best case scenario instead of worst here. It has been so nice to go out and visit with the girls again without being attacked every few seconds. Just a treat.

Chick Rookie- I read the rant the other day and I completely understand. When I first got my chicks, I assumed that tractor supply really sold me Ameraucanas because that is what they were marked. Well, I posted pics of them on the Ameraucana thread and quickly got yelled at (no kidding) by people who know the difference. I don't mind that there is a difference...that's cool....but I did mind getting snapped at. I found the Indiana thread and have lived here since. Kab said it best. They are sitting in their undies on the computer (That was hilarious). Janet and all the other administrators of this thread do a great job of keeping this thread family friendly and supportive.

I have said it before and will definitely say it again...YOU PEOPLE ARE AWESOME. I love the diversity of the people here from homesteaders, farmers, to backyard chicken keepers. I have learned that its ok to learn more frugal and simple ways of taking care of my chickens instead of getting just any new toy I find for them. I have learned that its ok and better to eat your own chickens because they were raised humanely. I have also really appreciated all the support in the ups and downs of chicken keeping. Its a great adventure (except for hauling water several times a day this winter...I could skip that). I will probably keep buying fun toys because I like them, but learning to make sprouts and FF will offset the toys. I will probably never kill my own chicken to eat, but you just never know.

That is wonderful!!!

I got tired of waiting, so I picked up a chick at the store today. Didn't expect to find any at Wal-green's, but it was only $.99. What breed do you think this one is? :D
a sizzle or frizzle maybe? It will be easier to tell when some of the feathers come in...or so I've been told ;-)
