INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

About 6:30 tonight I was standing in the kitchen looking out the back window and saw a flock of geese land in the field behind us.  A little bit later it struck me that they didn't look quite like geese.  So I got out my binoculars and my bird book.  I realized that instead they were sandhill cranes!  A flock of 13 of them!  We're about a couple counties west of their normal migratory path.  I looked up on line & saw that Jaspar/Pulaski counties have a huge migration landing area with 1000s landing there.  I thought it was really cool that we had some here.  They stayed in the corn field for about an hour before they flew off.  I'll be watching tomorrow to see if they come back.

My mom went to Little Nashville weekend before last and was thrilled to see HUNDREDS of cranes in a small lake/large pond on the way down!

The rain this morning is a welcomed sight over the white stuff! Yes it's messy and sloppy, but I'm so glad it's finally showing up. (Sad face) the near future looks like the temps are gonna drop into the low/mid 30's.
I need the weather to work with me so I can get my coop built!! Sorry y'all that was the first thing on my mind when I woke up lol now I hope everyone is blessed with a wonderful day!¡!¡!

I don't know if they are still there, but you can see thousands of them at a time at Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area in Linton. Also White Pelicans, Bald Eagles, some rare birds...flocks and flocks of snow geese. It is truly a wonderland.

So my 19 BAs are doing awesome still. I gave them the left over scrambled eggs a couple times and they LIVE them. Last night I went to give them some kale to see what they thought and one of them I've been wondering if it was a boy, ran over all ruffled up and spread his wings at me!! I was too surprised to knock him back like I would have. Only two weeks old and already have an atritude!!

Can someone just give me a button to push to get here?

I would like to be in touch with my fellow Chicken People, but I don't seem to be able to just click a button and find this. Have to keep going back to same old emails. Do we just have a Face Book page that we could all join or like? I could do one if we need it. I have a Face Book page started for my own @ The Feather Catcher's Nest seems like everything I tried placing into the title wouldn't allow me. GRRR! Everyone have a wonderful day. IT IS MARCH 19, 2014 and SPRING IS CLOSE!!

Had a bit of a bummer today. Went down to check on the chicks this morning, and found out I had lost my only Blue Barnevelder. No real warning, just was laying dead under the brooder. All the other chicks are doing great, growing like crazy and very energetic. I guess I should be thankful I've only lost one out of the 40 odd chicks i'm brooding.

Oh well, in this hobby, you will definitely lose some from time to time. You just have to do your best to keep them healthy.

One question though - it had yellow poo all over its butt. not like any pasty butt I've seen in the past. And none of the others seem to have it. Is the yellow a warning sign I should be watching for?

What heat source are you using? Could they have gotten too close?

Infrared 250w. It's about a foot from the birds. My fear was something like a parasite. If it's something on my end, I'd prefer that because at least it won't spread.

I'm going t put in my 2 cents here. 250w bulb that close to the bitties could b burning them. Even being infrared it's putting off quite a bit of heat. You may try pulling the light back another foot. Just to see if that helps.
