INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have been good but busy with the farm. 6 of the 9 does have kidded and in a few weeks our Shetland sheep will start lambing. All of my birds are laying especially the ducks. If anyone is looking for Cayuga hatching eggs let me know. Mine are laying great.

I am looking for a few birds. My son starts 4-H next year. He is wanting to show Golden SeBrights. I am looking to buy a pair or tro. I am also looking for. Lilac Tom turkey for new blood in my flock. I am also looking for SQ Cayuga hatching eggs, ducklings, or adults.

I am glad to be back on here. I miss talking with everyone.
Cayuga is a big one on my wish list too. Really attractive, interesting breed and history.
We are really glad to see you again, good luck on your searches!

Have lurked around this thread quite a bit - and guess it's about time to say

to the rest of the Indiana BYC'ers.

back and welcome to the thread! Feel free to lurk, chat or just sound off

Are you picking ducks to order, or getting them at a local breeder/store? I am seeing them everywhere!
I just locked down our first 2 pekin ducklings, one is already pipped internally at day 26!
Sound exciting!

We are researching (poultry educated) kid friendly breeds first. Then we'll decided if we REALLY want to go the extra duck mile! Any info would be great!
Quotes are not working right for me today!!
I like Muscovy the best as far as social, and multipurpose. Pekin can be friendly if handled a lot too.
All duck breeds are going to be messy. I don't normally house them with the chickens, trashes my Deep Litter fast.
Drakes will try to mate with chickens, and it can injure or even kill the hens.
They are fun, personable and worth having if you have separate housing.
Well my EE that was suspected with meraks, got her lab work back, and nothing seems out of the ordinary the vet said, so we.both are not sure what's going on with her, she is submitting her case to Purdue and hoping for a reply, she is attempting to stand, but still can't yet, and from what I'm researching in my own I can't find anything similar to what she is displaying.

fl.gif
good luck, hoping they find an answer for you.

I have seen that in one or 2 chicks that hatched from shipped eggs. Turkey poults have that issue a lot!
I can't help but think its some sort of vitamin/mineral issue.
Keep up with the vitamin/electrolytes etc. I bet that will help the problems with the chicks.
I really feel being chilled has caused your chicks issues also, you caught it in time to correct it for the stronger chicks.
Its very frustrating, sometimes things beyond our control really affect our littles and we have to solve the puzzle with missing pieces!

Congrats on the new babies and hatches!

If I didn't say it yet,

Your reasons are much the same as mine. I loved visiting my grandparents and learning about farming, poultry and livestock.
My parents and I even kept chickens several years ago until ordinances prevented it.
We moved my parents here, and now they live with DH and I. Now our lives are full and we are enjoying our critters.

Congrats to you and the new additions!

I know you are doing everything you can to help them. Holler if you need any ideas, thoughts.. we are all here for one another.
DH is actually grabbing up the books at all the farm stores now looking at them. He likes to see if I know what breed the picture is LOL!
He also is starting to recognize them and is learning the most common problems in chicks.
The author "Story" guides seem to have a lot of good info too.
The one didn't have a sezziure since the day I posted that.

Confused, but a little relieved. Everyone is doing great. I think we were just having a ruff patch, ready to move on from all the little problems for sure.

I want as many different colors in my flock as I can get as well as eggs.
Yesterday I got one of those e-mails from a friend of a friend of a friend.... this couple is thinning out their flock and heard that I need hens and he had 16 I could have if I wanted them. He said they were all just barnyard mixs and still laying but a few were 3 years old.
Well I'm sick of eating store bought rubber eggs so we went and got them, I thought I had really lucked out and got some Americana's, these grils have the ear muffs, beards and Slate legs.... I was so excited
woot.gif
but..... this is what I got this morning when I went to check on them,

got 2 of them , and they are big ones, so I'm still happy cause they are still Beautiful. o and one of them is solid white... yea!!!

I don't know what 1/2 of them are so guess would be great... and the Rooster and the hen together, that is the Rooster that is going. does anyone know what the hen is??

and the eggs I got already today
Fantastic, looks like they will be great for your new flock.

Jchny gets first dibs as usual but if she decides against it...... I have 3 proven white chinese ganders and 3 drake ducks various breeds for sale or trade email me if interested [email protected]
They are gorgeous birds, I wish I had room! I will probably be selling some of the Embden soon to make more room also.

I got 4 LF cochin babies today! They are having a little pasty butt, so I put electrolytes and probiotics in their water. I have been cleaning hineys since they got here. Also 2 of them have big scabs on their navels. If I leave them be, will they heal okay? Oh yeah and my little cochin bantam I thought was black is getting barred wings. I'm excited to see how it turns out.
If you see any redness, put a lil blukote on them. Congrats on the babies!

Went to Menard's and bought some building supplies for my new pallet coop! I know its a pallet coop but I am making the floor out of new lumber. If the weather is good for me this week I will start the foundation and floor. My oldest chicks are getting almost big enough to move out of the brooder. So I need to get this done quick, fast, and in a hurry
wee.gif
I need to get some updated pics of them posted soon. they are looking great. Hope everyone is having a great weekend!!
Looks like the cold snap isn't too long, can't wait to see the new build!

Well, I have some sad news:

Einstein, my lone EE hen, was killed today by either a stray cat or my brother's dog. She just turned a year old this week and started laying again a couple weeks ago.
After all that girl has been through...raccoons, flock illness, below freezing temps, etc. I just can't believe this.
somad.gif

This was her just a few days ago, when she was helping me clean my Jeep.

My DF called me as I was finishing up work and I cried all the way home.
hit.gif

I was going to start trying to incubate her eggs too.
rant.gif

fl.gif

Is anyone from Ellitsville/Bloomington and below (Southern Indiana) incubating at the moment? If Einstein laid an egg today before moving on to chicken heaven, it is most likely fertilized by her now lonely BCM boyfriend. I haven't tested out my incubator yet and if there's a chance to hatch, I would really love to try! I am going to be in the Bloomington area tomorrow, but I will drive anywhere within 2 hours of Dubois County. Thanks!
fl.gif
I am so sorry
hugs.gif
I am always incubating but am a long ways from you.
Good luck, what a horrible loss.

SallyinIndiana; i know this is late, but CONGRATUALTIONS on the birth of your new baby girl!!!

I am on day 5 of my first ever incubation & hatch. Temps have been pretty consistant until today when I had a temperature spike
sad.png
i think my daughter was in my "animal room" and might have messed with the knob on the thermostat....maybe i'll get a few quail to hatch, who knows
these are my little EE's i picked up a week ago yesterday. They love being held and immediately fall asleep when i hold them in my hands. i just want to hold them for as long as they'll let me!!! So different than the ones i gave to my sister last year.
i lost one of my BR pullets, she died without any warning, and i making sure i was keeping up with monitoring of the pasty bottom. this is my one survivor and she is two weeks old now
This is my newest addition to my general animal collection lolololol. This is my baby sugar glider named "Sugar Belle." I have only had her for a week and we are still in our bonding process. She is the cutest little thing ever and i love her little face and ears! I can't touch her yet because when they're not bonded yet, they tend to nip. When she gets upset she makes a noise that is comparable to a locust on steroids, and at first it's a little intimidating, so it's going take some getting used to.

Well i hope everyone has a great weekend. I'm looking forward to next weekend when it's supposed to be really nice!!! Have a great week!!
fl.gif
hatching vibes to you! good luck, and loved the pics!
Youngest DD kept gliders a long time, but with college and work, knew they needed someone with more time.
They are quite personable, and just precious little guys. BTW they LOVE mealworms! Wait til you see Belle eat one

If anyone on the thread has any Coturnix quail hatching eggs they would like to sell me Please send me a P.M. Thank you.. I am looking for 60-100 eggs.
Sent a PM.

How long can an egg be left out, waiting to incubate before it would go bad?
7 days is the "norm" but I know of people actually storing them in the fridge and able to hatch them!
If they are not washed, kept cool, I have heard 3 weeks plus,
I got some older eggs from bradselig and hatched about 40% in an LG, and even had a power outage.
No losses and the babies are thriving!

Quote: We have an old unit that is not compatible with our newer pcs. Plan to look at Fry's, new egg and tiger direct.. its fantastic to just check a monitor and not have to walk half an acre to check on critters.

Quote: X2 can't hurt to try

I got some chick pics:

This one really likes its picture taken

Thanks. They are being really noisy right now, you know since I am trying to go to sleep lol

HI all,

I've been lurking for a while on this IN thread. I'm in Rocky Ripple (in Indy) and have a small backyard flock I'm working on growing. My current flock consists of various colored brahmas and a Crested Cream Legbar. If the eggs I have currently incubating hatch, I'll be adding a couple Rhodebards and Olandsk dwarfs. Obviously, I have yet to figure out which breeds I prefer. I'm still int he wild experimentation phase.....

Right now I'm seeking Midget White Turkey hatching eggs or poults and perhaps a couple guinea keets. So, if anyone knows of someone with those on offer here in Indiana, I'd love to hear! I only need a few of each.

I do raise guinea, but they will not be laying til late April, early May. I keep pearl, lavender and white.
We have several members raising the other breeds of poultry you mentioned, just click the link for members at the bottom of my post.
Well I finally broke ground on the new Pallet coop! Here is where it will stand.

This the start of the block foundation. About 30 mins into the project, I couldn't get it squared. and I got tired of the 20 degree wind blowing in my face so I called it for the day lol. I'll work a little more tomorrow.
One step at a time! The wind was frigid today, oh my, I was just froze to the bone.

Hey everybody. What is the minimum number of chicks at rural king?
Ours in New Castle and Muncie are both 6 I think.

Just checking in!
I've been trying to keep up with all the posts, but have been really ill the last few days. Some sort of stomach virus or whatever they consider it. Ive only been able to eat broth with a bit of egg, hot tea, and water.
I've been reading about everything, but haven't been able to bring myself to comment, until now.

I need to get out to my yard. I have a second round of teenagers to put into the grow out coop and I believe the first set is ready to go into the big coop. I have a Birchen Maran roo I'd like to rehome, but I'll need to take photos another day. He is not SQ, lots of gold. I have only barely managed to get out everyday to feed, so hopefully I can get photos up tomorrow.
My ducks are outside and seem to be very happy, but after seeing Kab's ducklings, I'm REALLY doubting mine are Runners.
@kabhyper1 sorry about your loss
sad.png
and the last one totally looks like a runner.
@SallyinIndiana congrats on the birth of your girl!

...and I can't recall who(sick brain!) I'm so sad to hear about Einstein. What a bummer. She had the best story.
hugs.gif
Take care of you! There has been so many stomach flu and colds going. Lots of fluids and feel better soon.

Oh! and my neighbors behind me? Their teenagers like to have parties during the warmer months. Yesterday they had a bunch of friends over and to my chagrin, someone was cockadoodle-dooing my Roos into a frenzy. Ugh... Well I guess I can take solace in knowing the Roos don't bother them!
lau.gif
thats a good thing, sounds like you shouldn't have an issue on keeping roosters.

Sad news on my hives in between Friday and today the temperature drop caught my bees unexpectedly and their cluster wasn't warm enough and they died. I had 2 boxes on them and it looks like they had split themselves between the 2 boxes cause of the warmer weather and with the rapid change/drop in temperature they couldn't make 1 big cluster fast enough to survive. i just find it ironic i had them survive our horrible winter to die now lol but my adventure in bees is still going to continue i'll just won't have bees in my yard till late April early may
to end on a better note here is a pretty picture of my girl's eggs i was washing to be able to trade them
.
Nice egg collection! I am so sorry to hear about the hive.

Greensburg! and ready to get started very soon!

Just jump in! Welcome

Well since Scrappy is getting too tall for the net over the brooder, we decided to get imaginative. We moved them into a spare room and built a new brooder. Since it looks like a crow's nest on a boat, I call it the SS Quackn'poop.
The little itty bitties are in there now too.

Adorable! Where did you find the kiddie pool? I am getting frantic, my old one is full of holes!
No one is offering them yet.

Quote: I bet so, seeing many posts about hives lost. I have a wild hive that nested in my office trailer last year, they are business as usual.
We are considering keeping the hive.

Does anyone have any female ducks or ducklings they would want to part with? I was going to get another duckling, but I'm not sure I want to risk getting a drake. Scrappy may be a drake, and I would like a pair, or two females if Scrappy is a girl. I definitely need to have two ducks here though. Scrappy has chicken friends, but swims are lonely.
I have a ton of pekin incubating and 2 pipped but can't sex them. Will be selling a trio or quad of pekin soon also, to cut my flock down a bit.

Pretty chicks everyone! And spring is in the air with the new coop builds :D

happy-spring-smiley-emoticon.gif

I didn't quote any of the photos, but I noticed that some of the chicks in the photos have been sitting back on their hocks. Not sure if they were just resting or if they are walking that way. So I thought I'd just note to keep an eye on your chicks to see if they're walking on their hocks or on their feet. Or...if they are walking on feet a short distance then going down on the hocks. (This is different than resting!)

Walking on the hocks is usually a sign of a thiamin or riboflavin deficiency and chicks can usually be saved by adding some tiny chopped liver (raw) or a vitamin supplement into the water if this is caught in a timely manner.

Just a "heads up". :D
Thanks for posting this info! I agree, nutrients are a huge piece of the puzzle when chicks are ill.

Quote: I have room, and would be glad to do it. If I have a car that day I can even meet someone.

hello we are located in Chesterton, Indiana and just purchased our first chicks, which should be arriving in May. If you are in the area and looking for a vet who treats chickens I am a vet tech at Westchester Animal Hospital and he treats all kinds of animals (including chickens, ducks, peacocks, etc.).

Very pleased to add your vet info to our list.
Please feel at home and just jump in! Our only rule is to keep chat family clean, we have young adults as members too.

Ok well blood results came back normal for my lady, on doing research of my own, the result of articular gout sprang up,....anyone heard or dealt with this?
Wow, no I haven't but thats a much better diagnosis. Search it on google, if you get stuck holler for help!

I thought one of my meat birds either 1) got out of the run and wandered off or 2) a predator got to it. Came back later and it was strutting around the run. Needless to say I finally got a ''top'' put on the run. lol.... I often wonder where these ''lost'' birds go to when I can't find them. Can't wait to get back from vacation and get my turkeys, polish breeds, and some EE/Ameracaunas. Hopefully the weather figures itself out while I'm gone.
LOL there is always one that will challenge you. Mine is my GLW hen Spike. Out of the 200 some birds here, she is the one headache I love the most.

Thank you everyone for the kind words about Einstein's loss. After crying a bit and a stiff drink, I came to terms with her being gone and I told myself, I have more chicks and I can try and hatch her last egg, so I will live.

Non-chicken people just do not understand! Considering she was the lone chicken for so long, I really got attached to her. When I went up to the farm today and didn't see her pop out from under a bush and run up to me as I opened the car door, it was really sad. And then I saw Rex, the boyfriend (neighborhood Roo) walking around looking for her, I wanted to cry again. I told him, sorry big guy, your girl is gone.

M2H - I decided to try and hatch the egg myself. My dad had worked on the temp in our incubator all morning before I got up there. He said it's worth a shot. So thanks to everyone who offered! I just hope it didn't get too cold last night for it.

We'll see what happens!
fl.gif

Hope everyone has a great week!
Good luck! You are so right, my extended family eye rolls if I mention an egg even!
But they all sure liked the turkeys we provided for the holidays, and the eggs throughout the year.
I have my fingers crossed for your egg. Hoping that embryo has the fighting initiative Einstein had.
