INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Fantastic, looks like they will be great for your new flock.

They are gorgeous birds, I wish I had room! I will probably be selling some of the Embden soon to make more room also.

If you see any redness, put a lil blukote on them. Congrats on the babies!

Looks like the cold snap isn't too long, can't wait to see the new build!
I think so, if they are giving me 4 egg right after moving in to new home I think they are going to be awesome layers even as older hens. and of course I love the EE"s and I think I have 1 RIR and some Golden Comets,, and the rest I think are barnyard mix's, I think two of the GC and the 2 EE's are the ones laying right now. Cant wait to get eggs from my babies, but for now I'm happy NOT eating store eggs!!!!

Yesterday morning my husband was tending to the chickens when three teenage boys started to walk into the area where our coop is! As soon as they saw him they turned around and nonchalantly walked out of our yard and through our neighbor's back yard.

I can't wait to get my fencing up - to keep the chickens in, and the dogs and teenagers out!

Tiny says, "Hello!"
Hello Tina, you are very pretty, but I got a feeling you know that... lol

Loved all your pictures!

Nice design! We will be ordering our CX soon too.

It is really hard to establish new babies in the flock. You are doing the right thing, little more each day.
Fake eggs often do stop an egg eater. One of my pekin hens has gobbled an egg down right in front of me!
She quit after I tossed ceramic eggs out in the run, now I am usually getting 5 duck eggs in that pen. There are 5 pekin hens.
I have a GLW named Spike that is a notorious escape chicken, same thing! she is 2 years old now, fortunately has escaped harm so far.
My old flock destroyed the fake eggs I put in the nests.

I have seen that in one or 2 chicks that hatched from shipped eggs. Turkey poults have that issue a lot!
I can't help but think its some sort of vitamin/mineral issue.
Keep up with the vitamin/electrolytes etc. I bet that will help the problems with the chicks.
I really feel being chilled has caused your chicks issues also, you caught it in time to correct it for the stronger chicks.
Its very frustrating, sometimes things beyond our control really affect our littles and we have to solve the puzzle with missing pieces!

Congrats on the new babies and hatches!

If I didn't say it yet,

Your reasons are much the same as mine. I loved visiting my grandparents and learning about farming, poultry and livestock.
My parents and I even kept chickens several years ago until ordinances prevented it.
We moved my parents here, and now they live with DH and I. Now our lives are full and we are enjoying our critters.

Congrats to you and the new additions!

I know you are doing everything you can to help them. Holler if you need any ideas, thoughts.. we are all here for one another.
DH is actually grabbing up the books at all the farm stores now looking at them. He likes to see if I know what breed the picture is LOL!
He also is starting to recognize them and is learning the most common problems in chicks.
The author "Story" guides seem to have a lot of good info too.
It's funny when our DH's want nothing to do with it, they learn s fast or faster than we do...

I was asked today about how I package eggs for shipping. So if anyone ever gets eggs from me, this is how I do it for the most part. They got a little extra padding this time since they are going to Oklahoma tomorrow.
I go a bit nutz with the sharpie.

They better get there in one piece!
looks like you did all you could

Thank you everyone for the kind words about Einstein's loss. After crying a bit and a stiff drink, I came to terms with her being gone and I told myself, I have more chicks and I can try and hatch her last egg, so I will live.

Non-chicken people just do not understand! Considering she was the lone chicken for so long, I really got attached to her. When I went up to the farm today and didn't see her pop out from under a bush and run up to me as I opened the car door, it was really sad. And then I saw Rex, the boyfriend (neighborhood Roo) walking around looking for her, I wanted to cry again. I told him, sorry big guy, your girl is gone.

M2H - I decided to try and hatch the egg myself. My dad had worked on the temp in our incubator all morning before I got up there. He said it's worth a shot. So thanks to everyone who offered! I just hope it didn't get too cold last night for it.

We'll see what happens!

Hope everyone has a great week!
Poor Rex ( I think that was his name sorry if I'm wrong ) good luck with your hatch, hope you get your little Einstein.

We have an ongoing list of avian vets, and I will ask one of our volunteers, CRSelvey/Cheryl to add the Westchester Veterinarian info as well as the McAfee Vet info that Urbanmom just posted.

Veterinarian List ~ Click on: Vets Members, if you have information about avian veterinarians in your area, please PM CRSelvey.

Urbanmom~ This link has lengthy info about a variety of issues in both chicks and chickens.

chick rookie ~ I was just teasing about your roo-- I know that they can be dangerous, especially around children. Speaking of roosters . . .

My DH and I heard something today around noon that sounded like a kazoo-- but it was Mr. Rooster crowing! (He's my 10 week old English Orpington blue pullet cockerel from Kiniska. It was a regular long crow. When Nene's brothers started to crow, they only did the first part "cock-a-doo" for awhile before mastering the whole song. Since I had an inkling that she was a he, I had talked to Kiniska and jchny/Janet, and Janet is going to adopt him so that he can meet her lavender ladies. I'm in a predicament because the two orps (the other is a beautiful splash pullet) think they are the parents of my three silkies from bradselig. I really need to move the orps outside to get Mr. Rooster acclimated to the outdoors, but I hate to break up their little family knowing that they will freak out if separated. It's too chilly for the silkies. I just wish the temps would even out-- it shouldn't be in the 20s tonight!!
goatluver ~ Did you get chicks today? The Evansville Rural Kings require at least 6 chicks to be purchased. That's how we originally ended up with my RIR Nene and her five sisters brothers!

kabhyper ~ Thanks for the vitamin info. Your brooder looks like a part of an amusement park ride. (I've been watching too much "American Pickers")
CCCHICKENS~ Your little fuzzy chicks are sweet!
lollipopguild ~ Hope you have a good poultry sitter while you're on vacation. That's another one of those issues we've discussed on this thread-- how to find competent people to care for animals while away.
I know you were... I didnt mean to come off sounding like I was mad or anything, sometimes I don't word thing right sorry... We are all good, NP

That Spotted white hen is the twin to one of mine (the one in my avatar) she is a California White. Lays bluefish White eggs (more on White side though). The roosters of that breed are almost all quite aggressive. Someone on CA thread said they are raised for fighting because of their attitude.
She is very pretty, she was wild and I had to catch her ( took 3 people ) and cut her wind to keep her out of the tree... lol but the people that came and got the roo talked me into letting her go to so they could breed them, he said if I hatched any of her eggs and they came out to be Roosters they would be mean too. Sooooo I let her go. I know nothing about the breed so I am at the mercy of others.

Well since Scrappy is getting too tall for the net over the brooder, we decided to get imaginative. We moved them into a spare room and built a new brooder. Since it looks like a crow's nest on a boat, I call it the SS Quackn'poop.
The little itty bitties are in there now too.

What kind of netting is that? Thats a good ideal.

Well I finally broke ground on the new Pallet coop! Here is where it will stand.

This the start of the block foundation. About 30 mins into the project, I couldn't get it squared. and I got tired of the 20 degree wind blowing in my face so I called it for the day lol. I'll work a little more tomorrow.

Hey everybody. What is the minimum number of chicks at rural king?
6 here

Thanks so much! As soon as the swamp dries up in my backyard, I will get right on it. I am so tired of this weather!!!
I'm so ready for good warm weather too.

Well I had two of my newly moved out babes hatched in November come up missing last night at lockup and realized this morning that the feather mess I found was from my lone Silkie boy! Omg I could cry! I hate losing babes but out here with hawks and such it never surprises me...but to lose him..ugh...he has made it through a lot and was such a good boy! Of course one of the babes I lost was a blue copper Marans pullet.
Pic in memory of him!

So sorry :( He was sure handsome!

Jchny, The kiddie pools are the ones we used last year for the alpacas. I don't think anyone is carrying them yet for this summer. Chick Rookie, it is garden netting from TSC. I think it is 14' x14' it is around $5 or so.
