So depressed....last year I planted 30 trees, 20 screen poplars (since I live off of Michigan Rd) and 10 fruit trees. I haven't checked the fruit trees yet but the poplars all seem to be dead. Not only was all that expense and manual hole digging and watering for nothing....but i lost a year of growth and it will be even longer before anything grows up tall enough to block the road and help block some wind. Boo. I can't decide if I should re-plant or not. If I do I am considering going with the green giant arborvitaes. I really don't want to add digging and planting 30 trees to my already long Spring list!!!

That IS a bummer.

I've been trying to figure out what I want to plant at the front of this property which is a state highway that they have now added sidewalks to

Definitely not the same as it used to be in the old days...and I'd like to feel a little more "isolated". It just seems like by the time it grows I'll be dead and gone!

Have been considering some tall grasses. That way it doesn't put out any stumps to rid the place of in the future if someone doesn't want them there. But I can leave them up all winter and they'll recover relatively quickly after they're cut down in the spring.

Anyone have any experience with the tall grasses as a privacy fence?

Made a little progress today.

I used 6" fence post as legs, I cut a 3-1/2"x1-1/2" notch in the post so my frame could have something to sit in and fasten to. Then cut the legs to length to level the frame. I still need to run a 3rd set of blocks down the center with a 2x4 beam but it's more than I had done this morning lol.

As soon as I get the center beam finished I'll be ready for floor sheeting then the walls!!

The tall grasses work pretty well and grow quickly. I have heard bamboo is also a good privacy screen. My biggest issue is that it is an area the horses graze and I don't want them eating my privacy screen! They also tend to run over, trample small trees/bushes so I was hoping this year they would finally be established enough that I wouldn't have to worry. Boooooooooo.
