INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

After 2 days of a crappy head cold, I finally got out to the barn and Ivermectined my big kids. Stupid bugs! They also got a good sand and wood ash butt dusting. Not sure how much that helps, but it's that area that has the bugs. I'm also trying to find the best way to trim Gus' spurs. My poor hens are really getting torn up. He doesn't really over mate them. He is just a big boy with claws and spurs. The saddles help a bit, but he still manages to get under them somehow. I'm tempted to put full onsies on these girls. He is the best rooster, so he stays. We just have to find a way to make it less damaging on the girls.

Advice needed please!

The black Silkie rooster I've been talking about that I treated with Epsom salt is not doing well. At this point I am afraid it is internal since I cannot find anything wrong with him externally. I took this video today to demonstrate the problem, he is off balance while walking and gets turned on his side. Then he'll lay down and peck around a bit, get up, wander around and fall over again. Any advice would be appreciated. I tried to locate an emergency forum on BYC, does anyone have a recommendation please?

What age is this boy? It might be a "b" vitamin issue which is very common in leg issues. Chopped up raw liver is one of the best sources. For a quick, "not so natural" way, get some poly-vi-sol children's vitamins NO IRON ADDED and put in the water.

Glad your feeling better! Someone should invent a spur holster or sheeth for Roos! Good luck with Gus

Not to jinx myself....but I have had amazing pullet luck with my babies! At 9 weeks old it is looking like I have 1 blue isbar cockerel and 4 pullets! I thought I had 2 cockerels but now one is looking more and more pullet like! Woo hoo! Of my 3 birchen marans chicks, 2 turned out to be pullets (one of the pullets I thought for sure was a cockerel). Ugga (16 week old birchen marans pullet) is REALLY looking like she is getting close to laying!!! Peewee (the other pullet) is further behind in development like she has been all along. Look how red Ugga's comb and waddles have gotten this week!!

Here is Mr. Birchen Marans! He is so handsome and seems to be a really nice boy!!!!

I had the babies out to free range a bit tonight. The Bielie boys are starting to get shades of red popping throughout and are so pretty! The Isbars look like bantams next to the ginormous Bielies! They are all such nice looking birds!

Pretty isbar! They are just the pretties color and have these large luminous eyes!

The rest of the flock is doing okay, I am still having major issues with Chewie over breeding my girls and egg laying has decreased. They are all looking rough and I'm just not sure what to do. Next week my quarantined birds can come out of quarantine and I may move him out for a few weeks to give them a break. I really like him but he is doing his job too often and is a clumsy oaf, which doesn't make it easy on the girls. He is pulling out their neck feathers and doing a number on their backs. Poor girls and stupid boys!

I'm having the same trouble! Chewie is just so big and Cochins are not graceful! Let me know what you figure out! I'll order some onesies from you :) Maybe a nice chicken chastity belt to give them a few weeks off!

Thanks! I think I'm going to use a cut off wheel and trim his spurs down. They aren't that long, just sharp. I "candled" his spurs tonight, and they are completely clear almost to the leg, so not must risk of bleeding thank goodness. Maybe if I keep them short they wont grow as long and sharp. You tube has some pretty bloody spur removal methods, so I'm leaning towards the cut off wheel so it will cauterize while it's cutting. Wish me luck lol.

Where did you get your isbars from?

I was considering some cream legbars but have almost decided against it because of the crests. (Don't like crests for ranging and wanting to move away from them as much as possible in my SFH too.)

Anyhow, liked the idea of self-sexing cream legbars as I want colored egg layers and would really like to breed my own rather than purchasing hatchery EE's regularly. Perhaps the Isbars would be a good option. (Just thinking out loud here.)
