INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Im thinking of a fun project with our male goats. going to try and train them to pull a cart. Should be fun to train them. Need to order a harness and get started.
Sounds great! Bo is a handful but I bet he would do it. Goats are curious creatures and love to learn. I like the idea, gas and diesel are getting crazy expensive. I use a lawn tractor for daily stuff and the big tractor to move hay and the heavier yard work. He could help me haul bedding and the daily stuff to the coops

How big do your boys run? Bo is about 80 pounds, Oberhasli are a smaller breed.

Oh hatching friends I have an age old question. My broody was kicked off her nest while I was at work today. She's nearly a week into the process. She was locked out and it could have been up to five hours. She's back on the nest now. Think there is any chance those eggs will make it? It was 75 here and the eggs felt cool when I found them.
Candle them around day 10-14, they may be ok.

Question for the feed fermenters. What kind of feeder do you use? I'd really like the chickens to not walk in their food or knock it over. I've seen all the standard feeders at TSC, but I wanted to ask if there's any particular one that does better with mush.
I use PVC pipe cut in half. It allows all my birds to eat, and trust me there is no waste! They will walk on it some. but usually they are too busy gobbling it all up. You can put endcaps on it, or just screw it onto a 2x4 at each end.

Sadly though not unexpectedly, the baby was gone next time I went out to check on it. It kind of looked like something got it as my chamomile looked a little ragged. While sad I know it was for the best. On a good note, all the chickens were in the coop on their own tonight when I went out to close up!!!! Yay for not having to chase 19 chickens around the run! Especially since hubby is sick.
Sorry to hear DH is sick, hope he feels better soon! Sad for the baby. Its natures way of keeping a species strong.
Usually in a week or so, the chicks figure out where their home is. Sure makes life easier

Good post. I would love to replace it all with glass or ceramic.
Wow....ordered the premier heat plate yesterday and it shipped today. Must not be backordered any more!

awesome! I really hope to get one soon, much safer than red bulbs.
O my I had another delightful day after a hectic evening with games. .senior pics.. etc.. to find at first made me scratch my head in wonder where this little one came from! After looking her over more closely my 8yr old asks if it has 5 toes and sure enough it did! Lol my first offspring from my Salmon Fav girl. What a cutie! The chick looks like it has a little faint of splash on her back. Can't wait to see how she grows out.

congrats, just too cute! Your 8 year old sounds like he has a love of chickens too!

Here is a updated pic of the chick I helped to hatch today along with the chick that hatched while I was helping the other one out. She's still looks pretty weak, but she's moving around pretty good. There's one more that hatched while I was gone tonight. There are still 8 eggs to go yet. A couple look like they might have really small pips but I can't tell for sure. Tomorrow will be day 23. Okay here's another question, can I candle them tomorrow if I don't see any pips to see if they are still alive or do I just leave them alone for another day or two?
I go to day 25 on chicken eggs. Do candle and tap the eggs before you give up on them. Hold them to your ear and listen. Gentle taps will wake a sleeping chick. Repeat the process for misting if you remove chicks, humidity is very important. If there is no odor it wont hurt to wait a few days.

Very off topic but had to share these... These beautiful young ladies are MY Grand daughters! The first two are Rachel and Brittany they are Seniors and both are recipients of full ride scholarships one to Glenville State the other to WVU. Tierra is a Junior and (along with her sister and cousin) is a National Honor Society Member throughout her High school years. I'm so proud!
They are Beautiful young ladies! I certainly would be proud too

Give the chick time, he should be fine. Avoid a lot of bright light so they aren't picking at him/her. Red light they usually won't pick another chick.

So, my FIL hatched these babies out from eggs donated to him. Parantage is unknown. 5hey are kind of "surprise" eggs. Most likely, they are mixed, but does anyone see anything there that they recognize as a certain type of chicken. They are all from extra large brown eggs.

and our thread if I haven't said it already!

Hard to tell on the chicks, see some pattern on the wings already. There is nothing wrong with barnyard mix birds, and IMO they are hardier and live longer than a true breed. My mixed egg coop give me some very hardy layers and a lot of the hens are mixed EE, GLW and BAs.

I like to stay away from plastic - especially with ff since it has such a high acid content that I don't like leaching the plastic into the feed so...

I pick up pyrex at resale shops or garage sales...or sometimes new as it's pretty cheap. That is a flower box I got from Menards (sorry Brad) that those are sitting in. It just happened to fit 2 of them.

I also use the pie pans during the winter on a warmer/heater base and throw some outside as well. To keep them from standing in the pie pan last winter, I inverted a small pyrex storage container in the center to make them stand all around it

I was thinking heavy ceramics might work; I like the idea of a bowl in a bowl to keep them off. Right now I have big garden rocks in metal pans (which I won't be able to use with the FF anyway) just to keep them flipping the pans over when they try to perch on the edges. I have one pullet in particular who is convinces she won't be able to reach her food unless she's standing in it.

What size pvc are you using?

Nubians are a large breed, The bucks can #200 no prob. They are very strong. I made a make shift harness yesterday and hooked My buck boomer up to a large cooler and my daughter sat on it while Boomer took her for a ride lol, I do not believe He is going to take to much training. Now I need to order a nice harness and build a wagon/cart of some sort.
