I'm sorry I still can't see from the pics what you're talking about. I do see the vent of course. Appears a bit protruding but clean and not "backed up". They are pretty well feathered so holding the wings out may just be because it's too hot for it's age. What is your brooder temps? Age of the chicks? Otherwise maybe someone else has feedback because I'm not seeing anything abnormal. Coincident perhaps for the other to have passed. I'll have to read up on the other diagnostic you mentioned.

Ok hold your breath! !
Here's to hoping it's a boy! Lol

These are the ones in their new digs...about 3 weeks old.
Cuties!! Love the NN!

H, neighbors! I'm Laura and I live in Porter, IN. When DH and I bought a house here, we had plenty of friends already living here and a few of them also had chickens. I was told we could keep up to 6. So I got 6
smile.png
. But now I've learned that isn't exactly true
sad.png
. And, of course, aside from the money we put into them and their awesome accommodations - we love these birds! I love them. So I'm trying to get the town ordinance changed. Our next council meeting is in a couple days, so... Wish me luck!

There is a lot of help here
https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/37/local-chicken-laws-ordinances-and-how-to-change-them
One very good point to be aware of, our state capitol allows chicken keeping in the city! Ask them why they can't allow them there if Indianapolis will?!?
Best of luck on your fight with them and please let us know how its going

Happy Mother's Day to everyone!!! human moms and animal moms!!

Got our garden planted. Lots of work in this one! Glad it's done and now we have some rain showers heading our way. Not soon enough my newly seeded alfalfa field really needs the rain. Brought home the Wheaton Marans lastnight and they are doing great. 6 eggs out of 10 birds is not to bad.

Here are two Maran eggs next to my golden comet eggs.
Nice color to them. I'm going to collect the first bunch and try to incubate them.
Lovely color! Congrats on your new birds also!

X2, you are always very reasonable. Tolbunt is so rare, You should have no problem selling.
Wow!that was quite a storm! Looked out my window to see my lawn roller rolling across the lawn! I guess I drained it a day too early! The rain was coming from the south, so it was pouring in my back sliding patio door! Never had that happen. Guess I need to look into a new door or sealing it better. Glad it has stopped for now, but looks like it's going to be off and on for the next couple days!
Yikes! Yes we got several inches here, hard rain. Sure made the ducks and geese happy today tho, the pond was overflowing!

Hi to all my new Indiana friends. I just got several new chickens this weekend and was wondering if you guys could help tell me what some of them are. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

This is Pricilla, she came with a polish rooster and she lays white eggs. I was hoping she was also a polish, but her comb is not V shaped and her puff on top of her head isn't anything near what the roo's is. She's also very small.

This is peanut butter, he is a bantum roo, but not sure what kind?

This is Merida and Madilyn they are about a week old, have no idea what they are?

My other Bantum roo. White leghorn? But he has a rose comb.

Any info can help. I am wanting to mate some of them with others of the same breed to get as close to pure as I can. Thanks
Priscilla has a crest for sure. May have been trimmed? Not sure what breed she is.
2 looks like a millie fluer.
The last has the stance of an OEG, how big is he? But OEG also have a straight comb. Definite splash, may even be a mix.

Ok New to the Group and new to being a "chicken mama". Have 4 Australorps and 9 Easter Eggers. Live in town and are allowed only hens, but low and behold, after we moved the 6 week old "ladies" outside, SOMEbody crowed... not once, not twice, but 3 times.. the last 2 I asked him to do it again, and he did... So now Chicken Noodle needs to find a home. A few chicken friends said "sure bring him over, he will be good in a pot." and city girl, animal lover that I am, I can't do that.... Ugh....hoping to find him a home here soon...

I will have a couple questions here in a bit ... trying to find some things out on my own.... that's sorta how I learn best

Thanks

Don't hesitate to ask questions if you need to.

Man I sure got rocked by the storms!!! The storm seemed to come out of nowhere (did I miss the predictions or what?!?!?) and went from clear skies to black skies in period of about 10 minutes. It interrupted my deck lattice project with only 3 feet left to do! My type A personality was seriously puckered by that! I got 2.5" of rain last night and am fairly flooded this morning lol! We needed the rain for my poor pasture so I am not really complaining but moderation would be good!!!

I introduced some younger babies to my Isbar/Bielefelder coop on Saturday and last night my Isbar roo decided to forgo his usual spot on the roost with his peeps to sleep in the chick pile with the babies! How cute is that! What a cute boy he is!! It was definitely my least drama filled introduction ever, which was nice. They are such docile birds it is amazing and I am excited to have what appears to be a baby-nurturing rooster! My Bielefelders (which are probably pushing 8 lbs already at 12 weeks old) were afraid of the babies and giving them a wide berth. I went out last night to find that one of the new babies, a silkie, had managed to make it through the plastic over the pop door and was cruisen around the run with the Bielefelders! Such a cocky little thing!

Hi boys! They are starting to get a lot of bronze saddle and hackle feathers coming in! You can also see my "elegant" wild bird solution in the bottom, a thick plastic car mat from wal-mart (about $2 each) cut into strips and secured over the door. The chickens learn to push through it (that is a chore to teach them!) but the wild birds are too small to do so.

This boy will be going to live the life with jchny2000! He is probably the most mellow out of all of them!

My neighbor called me this morning and said he saw a baby mink near his barn. He raises tumbler pigeons and has had a whole pen of babies wiped out by the mink last Summer. We are trying to figure out how to handle the situation since they are so hard to catch. Bummer, I never did manage to catch the one in my barn but so far it hasn't been a problem with my chickens. I think he is going to adopt a barn cat or two and see if that will keep them away. That isn't really an option for me with the dogs and the road so close.

I am still tackling my many projects but my list is getting smaller which is nice. I am hoping after this next week I can slow down a bit and enjoy the nice weather! A couple more yards of mulch, a bee hive to build and one more run to build and I should be pretty set for a while! I have a few more crops to get in the ground, but a large majority of my planting is done. If only the dang rabbits would stop chewing the tops off my newly planted shrubs!!! I am going to be seriously peeved if they kill them all!! I am going to be trying to figure out how to create chicken wire cages tonight until they get big enough to withstand stupid animals.
Goodness, he is so handsome! Look forward to him being here
love.gif
. Mink are a tough one to deal with. Cats may help.. They are very secretive lil things.
I envy your rabbit population, we have like 1 cottontail here I think still alive. I have my lil orphan yet, he is doing fantastic. If anyone ever runs into this, goats milk works for orphan rabbits! He is weaned now. We are still trying to decide what to do. He has no fear of people, or dogs so he/she whatever it is may just stay a pet.
I have so many projects.. Get one done and find 10 more. I just pick one thing a day, sometimes 2..
Quote: Good post on the minks! I would for sure call, and talk to a field officer. They really don't want a lot of "hey I trapped one" calls, but it may depend on species also. We remove a lot of raccoon yearly, I keep 2 live traps going every day.. DNR asked we not call, LOL! They just don't have the staffing to return all the phone calls. Many are distempered, and with this rain and cold front you can bet there will be a few pop up. Out in the daylight, head shaking, tremors, just standing still hanging its head are all symptoms. I have seen them convulsing and bouncing like a ball. Its pretty awful for the poor critters. Its related to canine distemper, so if you see a raccoon doing this, make sure your dog is current on shots. I worked with a vet in the late 90s to determine what the disease outbreak was then. There were well over 500 raccoon in one city alone that were ill and picked up by us (animal control). Lab results were canine distemper.

IF you are going to open the incubator I would move the "stuck" egg. Opening incubators during the hatch phase will cause you issues with any pipped eggs. In my experience it takes about 3-5 seconds of exposure to outside air to dry the egg sac enough to where the chick can no longer tear through it, also the sac becomes stuck to the chicks and they can no longer rotate inside the egg.

Every single time I hatch I have to help the last few chicks out of their eggs. After 5 or more experiences doing this it becomes simple and less off a panic attack.

There are some great threads on BYC to help you get those chicks out of the eggs. Ultimately what I do is turn the sink water on slightly at 100 degrees, then i peel the egg shell away from the sac first. Then i gently massage the chick (still inside the sac) under the running water until the sac just rips part in my hands. This entire process takes me around 30 minutes per bird. The survival rate so far is very good for me. You must be aware of where the head is so that you don't drown the chick. Also the process doesn't smell very nice.

Good luck!

Awesome post on assisting. The other important point is to watch for live veins, if there are any still blood filled the chick is not ready to hatch. They are in the inner membrane. Any hint of a drop of blood is an immediate stop. Make sure you have a lot of light, the active veins are easy to see.

Hi all, thought I'd jump in here for a minute and say "howdy" to ya'll. My Beautiful daughter fixed dinner for us last night. She cranked up the grill and made Beef steaks and Pork Chops. Delicious potato salad and macaroni salad, baked beans and deviled eggs accompanied the meats. Had à very nice time (even if I was hurting). Saturday was Prom night here I have three gorgeous Grand daughters attend (pictures later) after they left I ended up in the ER. Back spasms so bad I couldn't stand up nor sit upright. After three injections of major pain killers it still hurt but I was too drugged to care. Hoping t here back from my personal physician shortly.
Hope you all had better weekend than I did! Sunday, after dinner, I tried my best to ignore the back issues and got my herbs planted and some flower seeds put into pots/planters. Then came the rain! No storms here just a nice constant light rain, perfect for new plantings! Sure hope there's no storm damage in your area! You all Take care of yourselves and your families ( whether they have fur, feathers,or people hair...lol). Miss ya all!

Take care of yourself, hope you feel better soon.
Funny chicks! So I have my AM roo separated for breeding and since I haven't been able to successfully reintroduce he and my BCM roo without fighting. ..all of the babes decided they would go through the pallet run and chill! Hahaha! They go in and out but must feel safer with him than all these hens running around!
Aww, too cute! They will comingle when ready.

High had my phone and look what I caught on camera finally!

In other news I got an email over the weekend that my chicks from Walt's Ark are supposed to ship tomorrow. They were going to ship today, but Colorado got hit with a snow storm and the chicks have to go through Denver. So if the weather allows my chicks will ship tomorrow.
I also think I now have a broody oegb. She wasn't in her normal spot last night when I was counting chickens so I climbed up into the loft of the chicken coop and there she was sitting on a nest and when I asked her what she thought she was doing she growled at me and got all puffed up. This afternoon I went to check again on her and she was still there. If she stays I will probably mark a couple of the eggs she is sitting on and let her hatch them. I have chick overload here.
LOL hear that! My 2 geese are still broody. My older goose hen hatched another pekin, ugh...more pekin. They had been laying in the goose nest, so there are a few mixed in.

What do I do!!! I just found a baby bird in my newly planted chamomile! Its still mostly pink and the eyes aren't even opening a lot!! Do I move it? I can't just leave it, it will die where it's at. I can't even imagine how it got there as there's no place for a nest even close by. Ahhh help!!
Oh no. Without knowing what it is, its not promising. Different birds are either grain or bugs, the mother regurgitates the food to feed them. It could have got there by several different predators too. I'm so sorry.

I ran across this blog post today on treating Bumblefoot. I was wondering if anyone has seen or tried this?

http://ouroneacrefarm.com/bumblefoot-treatment-tricideneo/

I've done the surgery with successful results, but if this works, it is much less invasive.
Wow, that is a lot less severe! I have done one bublefoot so far myself with good results.

These two little monsters are hanging out with me today. I figure a nice cold wood floor should kick the broody right out of them. Stinkers were on top of each other in a nest box brooding away. No more chicks right now ladies.
UGH hear ya! I am buried in broodies, 4 australorp, 2 geese, 2 Muscovy and now a guinea hen
barnie.gif
My turkey hen finally gave it up, took the poults today. Only left her one fake egg this time too. That was a challenge, She was not giving the babies up. My big tom was really ticked too! The hen actually went after me, and flew up at me!
hide.gif
DD was there and able to deflect her attack with the net. They are good parents and I loved watching the tom teaching them how to eat.. but If I want to build my flock for next year, I need her laying eggs. Felt really lousy taking the babies
sad.png
I will be letting her brood for sure next season. She and my tom have proven they can rear poults quite well on their own. The poults settled in well, and am spoiling them rotten! Being with the incubated poults is really helping the babies adjust.

You did great! congrats on your assisted hatch. Be sure to give the chick vitamins and electrolytes to give her a boost.
Kab, the babies are precious!

So, my FIL hatched these babies out from eggs donated to him. Parantage is unknown. 5hey are kind of "surprise" eggs. Most likely, they are mixed, but does anyone see anything there that they recognize as a certain type of chicken. They are all from extra large brown eggs.
