INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Southport:

9.08.050 KEEPING HORSES, PONIES, MULES, DONKEYS, JACKASSES, LLAMAS, AND POULTRY.

It shall be unlawful for a person to own, keep, or breed a horse, pony, mule, donkey, jackass, llama or poultry in the City of Southport on premises which measure less than 8,000 square feet in a lot area per animal, unless such premises are registered as a stable under Marion County ordinances. (Ord. 9.08 § 105, passed 11-16-2009)

That would be a lot of pasture for a chicken. You can apply online to register your coop as a stable at:

No chickens in Beech Grove, and no more than 4 dogs or cats.

Should we send an email over to the Crazy Cat Lady Forum?

ETA:

Because no one wants more than four of these across the street.

Hoosiercheetah, could you come?

I will if I can, but I can't promise anything. Scheduling for me is always difficult.

If I were you, I would ask all of your neighbors to either go to the meeting, or if they can't go, write a brief letter explaining that your chickens have never caused them any kind of problem, and that they support changing the law to allow chickens.

I am getting all my neighbors to show up. I think I know who called, too. There's a guy down the street from me whose dog gets out constantly. I have had to call animal control because he chased and nipped my children.

I find it hard not to dislike vindictive neighbors. Sometimes I find their address on their mail box, and sign them up for all of the free junk mail I can find on the internet. Because I'm also vindictive, and also sort of juvenile. :-D

I didn't believe it at first either - then I remembered that Lawrence is one of the excluded towns. Punks.

If you live in Beech Grove, Southport, or Speedway, you might want to look at the ordinances there, too. I'm not in one of those, but I'm going to look at their laws now, and I'll report what I find.
Yes - PUNKS!

I knew about Beech Grove b/c I have 2 friends there who were immediately jealous when I got mine. So Thankful I live in Irvington right now! Fortunately one of the guys who had a big part in making us a historic neighborhood has chickens, and I'll bet others did to so they fought for chicken rights!

Letters and showing up are great plans. I once heard that politicians use this for letter writing influence: for every written letter there were 50-100 other people that agreed but did not write. Letters have the ability to be great reminders of who all showed up as the people review the details after the meeting. A crowd of people showing up has a great visual impact.
