INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Whatever happened to the idea of PRIVATE land ownership?

Private land ownership officially ceased to exist with the institution of property tax. No one in the US owns their property. You lease it from the government at whatever the local tax rate is. You don't pay the tax, you don't keep the land. Does that sound like ownership to you?

By the way, since you brought it up, the Income Tax was declared unconstitutional TWICE by the Supreme Court. Yet here we are. Look up the politics involved in that disaster.

If you think either or both of these things should be changed, if you think you should be able to do what you want on your land or in your home, if you think that the government is eroding your personal freedom and spending too much of your money, VOTE LIBERTARIAN. They are the only political organization interested in reducing government influence, power, and spending.

ETA I don't normally rant this much. I've been a little excitable lately, and this kind of stuff really frosts my gizzard. So please excuse me, and I'll try to calm down and keep it to myself. ;-)

I've had a broody for 8 weeks now. Adele, our bantam black orpington, has not earned her keep by laying eggs for over 2 months now.

We stuck a chick under her to break her but that didn't work. I've seen a video on youtube where you put a chickens butt in cool water and that's supposed to break them. I have mixed feelings about doing that to her.

It got me thinking though, maybe I could stick an ice pack under her in the nest. That seems a little less mean, but still not a nice thing to do. If she didn't like it, she could get up and go into another nest box. If she stayed, it might bring her temperature down enough to break her.

Thoughts about that strategy? Beyond feedback that it's not a nice thing to do, do you think it might work?

If I leave her be, how long do typical broody streaks last? She's getting thin and I'd like to start getting eggs from her again.

I had a little cochin banty mutt that set her self to death. I could not break her. That was along time ago and since have found a new trick. My old neighbor would hang a cage in the barn and put the broody hen in it. Every time the hen would move the cage would move. I guess it took her mind off of setting long enough to make her forget about the nest.

Your post made me thing of that old TV show the west wing. It included more than a bit of how politics worked. Sure made me think twice about voting for a congressman based on their statements of passing tax breaks. Made me ask who was the tax break for and what got cut from the government budget.
I would love to do away with property tax and sales tax. It seems to me that those are the taxes that the poorest end up paying.
Still taxes aren't the only thing wrong. When our college graduates can't get a job paying more than minimum wage, that is a problem. The cost of college is a problem too. I know more than a few people that after spending over $100,000 on a college education, they are not able to get a job that pays enough to support their family or even pay back loans at a reasonable rate. Still their college send them requests for more money as alumni are expected to donate.

I find it hard not to dislike vindictive neighbors. Sometimes I find their address on their mail box, and sign them up for all of the free junk mail I can find on the internet. Because I'm also vindictive, and also sort of juvenile. :-D

Ditto. Unfortunatley ours lives next door ad works for the Mayors Action Line. Everyone in the area knows it is her who calls on whatever minor infraction. Actually, the city knows too and don't take her quite as seriously anymore, they are sick of her too. But since she works for the place where people call in their complaints it is really easy for her to give an "anonymous" complaint. She is the one who will complain about a rooster if we have one.

I am getting all my neighbors to show up. I think I know who called, too. There's a guy down the street from me whose dog gets out constantly. I have had to call animal control because he chased and nipped my children.
LPT my thought is that someone, maybe not a near neighbor, but someone had to have called on you or how else would they know if your near neighbors are supportive? If that guy is holding a grudge, then probably him. Why can't we all just be nice and get along?

(hey I finally figured out how to put 2 quotes in one post!)

All I can say is.... I vote for a constitutional republic. (And if you don't know what that is, spend some time to educate yourself.)

Nothing else has ever given people the freedom that they long for in the history of mankind... and we're in the process of losing it.

If anyone knows of someone wanting to start a small flock, send me a pm...I may have just what they need!

So y'all can blame this mini-lecture on Sally. ;-)

We're a great big country with lots and lots of different issues. I'm a college-level teacher, and my wife was an inner-city middle school teacher, so I'm very familiar with the problems in education. I don't have answers for a lot of them. However, what I know with absolute certainty is that the first step in solving education problems is to dissolve the federal Department of Education, and severely restrict the power of the state's DoE. The DoE has utterly failed to make one single improvement in education since it's first day.

This principal applies to almost everything that the Federal government gets involved in. You can find example after example in our history. There is no problem that can't be made worse by involving the federal government. Because it's not their job. None of it is.

The Fed has three jobs.

1. Maintain a National Defense. This does not mean getting us involved in every war that breaks out on the globe. It does not mean defending the foreign interests of private business. I means defending our soil against invasion. Period.

2. Negotiate Treaties with Foreign Nations. This is almost the only thing they get mostly right, except that this power was never intended to extend into regulating foreign trade. Our government's interference in the global free market has had severe consequences for every nation on earth.

3. Regulate Trade Between the States. Which doesn't mean price fixing and subsidizing every industry that goes through a normal market fluctuation. Again, regulation a free market is never good for the growth of an economy, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something.

That's it. Those three. Everything else the federal government does is unconstitutional.
Yes, that means Medicare and Medicaid. Yes, that means the minimum wage. Yes, that means whatever pet political cause you feel really strongly about. It's not the government's job to make you happy or guarantee the quality of your life! Any attempt to do so leads to a downward spiral into corruption, insolvency, and a weak and easily enslaved population.

Do those sound like hard words? They are. They are also a call to a decision. How would you have it? Difficult Freedom or Easy Slavery? I can tell you what our ancestors chose. What will you choose?

I think this is pretty inappropriate for this board. Sorry guy you know I like you but I politics is too divisive for our happy home. I wouldn't want to talk about abortion or GMO's or circumcision on here either.

Ok guys. So yet another issue popped up. Unfortunately the regulations are such that I would only be able to keep 6 hens. Now I think I could probably squeeze 8 or so in there but that's about it. I know someone who can keep my 2 roos so I am hoping I can find a neighbor who will let me keep the other 8 there. Or maybe my parents. God please.

Maybe it is time to start thinking about moving with all those restrictions! You had such plans to breed and it is a shame to totally give up on that idea.
