INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Politics are part of the thread already maybe not every topic in politics but it government is brought up here quite a bit. After all it is politics and government that are stating who can have chickens and who can't in many cases. In some cases it is a homeowners group that governs the neighborhood.

And as long as it is family friendly I don't see the harm. After all this is a very diverse group. We have chicken pet owners, those who use their chickens as a part of being homesteaders, chicken breeders, owners wanting only eggs but not pet chickens, owners wanting eggs and meat but still not a large flock,...
And I have even seen a few posts in the thread stating positive info towards birds of prey. I am to the point of having a very very strong dislike of all birds of prey.

There are several other ways to say our thread is diverse too. We vary in location somewhat. Southern IN sure does not expect to get lake effect snow. We vary in age too, from the old (old Salt even put old in his screen name) to the young (I'm sure we have encouraged a few to get their HS diplomas). There are so many ways to say we are diverse; religion, food we feed our family, food we feed our chickens, entertainment likes,... Politics is only one of many dividers.

We are quite a diverse group. So sure we will have varying opinions on things like politics and childcare. But as long as it is family friendly and not against BYC rules, it is OK here.

Yeah I think chicken politics is part of it. General politics can be very divisive and Dems Vs. Repubs Vs. Libertarian etc can be a very very fast way to start getting NOT so family friendly.

Anyway, as I said, it's what I think. I think it's inappropriate, because I've seen things turn very very ugly very very fast when it comes to politics. I'm possibly in the political minority on here, I don't know.

Yeah I'd really like to move. But I'd have to sell my house for what it's worth so that I'd have enough money to put down on a house with some property. I'd also need to do some work...get the floors replaced at least in a couple of rooms, and repaint the house (I painted it very colorfully). It really stinks cause I just put a lot of time and money into the outside of this house this year.

I did find someone who would keep my roos for me for breeding. Then I could keep my 2 sets of hens for breeding and then maybe 4 additional pullets for eggs. Maybe my mom or a neighbor will keep the rest of the girls. I'm so upset. And why the arbitrary number of 6??
I feel like 6 is such a strange number too. Not really enough to get eggs for yourself and if you have a family, not near enough to get eggs for all of them. Also not enough birds if you wanted to do meat birds alone or have meat birds and egg layers. In the raising chickens for dummies book, I believe the authors say the most members a flock can have is 24. Which isn't to say that you couldn't have flocks separated on your property if you had room to do so. 24 sounds a lot more reasonable for people living in city limits than 6 IMO.

What kind of chicks did you get?  Pretty cool packing peanuts!!!

The first box was Bielefelder flock (17 total 11 pullets and 6 cockerels, lost a gal:(. Won them from an auction from greenfire. I love the auto sexing feature and that they lay huge eggs. I want to sell some eggs to clients that come to the lake for the summer, or give them as a sign of appreciation. Hopefully breed some. The Marans came with a pair of cream legbars and a very intriguing trio of auto sexing olive eggers. Again I want a pretty egg basket:) then today another order came from a hatchery that are welsummers, silver laced cochin, California whites, austrolopes, golden laced wyndattes, & Easter eggers. The kid's 4h project. We are swimming in chicks. The marans are black but are supposed to have the lavender gene?? Not to familiar with genetics.

Where I found it: http://www.survivalboards.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/uncle-sam-raising-chickens-3613.jpg

It is printable if you follow the link. I just did not want to paste a giant screen filler picture here.

Thanks I printed up 5, I think I will make copies at the copy shop instead of using up more ink but I think I'll print this out and hand it out at the meeting.

Ok guys. So yet another issue popped up. Unfortunately the regulations are such that I would only be able to keep 6 hens. Now I think I could probably squeeze 8 or so in there but that's about it. I know someone who can keep my 2 roos so I am hoping I can find a neighbor who will let me keep the other 8 there. Or maybe my parents. God please.

If you are wondering why the number of birds is six is because there are those that say if they are allowed 6 than they probably get by with 8. Next year they say I got by with 8 maybe I will try 12. This goes on until the flock grows to 22and somebody complains and you are forced again into the situation that you are in now. Everyone knows that it was because that SOB down the road can[t keep his dog up.
I am sorry for you but I think you are going about it the wrong way. I hope you can work something out that everyone can live with.
