INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Morning, All!
I am giving a go at raising coturnix quail, never had them before. They have been pretty regular at laying everyday until the last few days. Anybody know if they are affected by the heat that much? I have them shaded and keep fresh water to them. Haven't had a single egg out of either group for two days now.

Haven't heard from Lonely or Racin, how did the council meeting go last night?

The meeting went well. Very sparsely attended. 3 people spoke in favor, 1 against. The people (including @lonelypageturne) who spoke for the resolution were very well spoken. The person who spoke against....not so much.
The councilors on the chicken committee had a very good discussion, and I can see a lot of support there. They ended up deciding the ordinance needed to be re-written to add in more wording to give guidance for the welfare of the chickens. For example- square footage of pen and coop per chicken. They are also planning on tying amount of chickens allowed to lot size. They are planning a working meeting soon, and have asked Lonelypageturne and other advocates to participate in coming up with the guidelines.
It looks like a positive outcome is definitely possible.

Glad it went well and I am glad they are going to be modifying the wording for the welfare of the chickens. If only all animals were so protected!! Not a bad outcome at all. Can Lonely keep her chickens while it is being re-worked? Hopefully this won't take much time to get resolved.

Ok another breed question :) what's this banty roo please?

For those of you in or around the Carmel area, I have drafted a letter to the city council members in hopes of raising the current limit to six hens. If any of you are interested in doing so, I would appreciate your help in lobbying for this cause. I think the best way to accomplish this is by many of us writing similar letters to various council members. This link contains their contact/ e-mail information.

I live in Carmel with a small flock of 8 chickens who are not overly noisy and we keep up with them so the smell is negligible but a neighbor complained and the city sent someone out. I think the main complaint was about a new shed we put in to use as a coop, but of course that brought up the issue of numbers in my flock. The ironic part is that the inspector said that for my property's size, I am allowed to have five sheds... Go figure... Then of course the complaint included the honey bees which are completely legal. @%$hole neighbor just being anti-social in general. The city is demanding that I get rid of 5 hens in the next 2 weeks. A different neighbor has offered that we can put our portable coop on his property, but that still leaves 2 that I have to get rid of

Any help you guys can offer is much appreciated. I see my chickens as pets more than just egg producers and have raised them from chicks, so picking is nearly impossible.

Thanks so much

I sent an email. A little late, but hopefully it helps down the line.

thank you you for your offer I'll definitely keep you in mind once i make my decision. i just got back from speaking at my city council meeting to ask them to increase our hen limit. I'm glad i went as before it started one council member was asking the others if they had heard about increasing the limit on hens and i'm hoping my speech shows it is an issue that a lot of its residents want changed. i am really hoping they will change it.

Hi guys!
Been AWOL a while now. My Dad had open heart surgery at 80 years old. This is his 2nd time, first was 1986. They replaced his aortic valve, rerouted a bypass and removed an anurism. He moved to progressive care today and has no tubes, IVs nothing! Was able to enjoy real food for the first time in over 2 weeks. He had the procedure last Monday a week ago. We are moving him to short term nursing care possibly this thursday. He is still very weak and needs PT to regain strength. 24 hour care with his new defib/pacemaker.
Thank you all, your kind words and thoughts have really helped me going through this

. 2 weeks ago I truly thought I was losing my Dad. He is a fighter, and I believe all the prayers and well wishes kept him going.

Chickenfest... I have very few committed to come. My RSVP date is this sunday, June 22nd. I can't see renting a building if we have so few attending. Please, PM me if there is ideas on what to change. This is our thread, our group... comments are welcome! Send me a message. Our campground is very active, and is hard to reserve the barn during the summer. I will need to let the owner know by sunday.

That is great news about your dad.

I can't commit in advance about the meet up. Sorry! These kids are running me ragged this summer, literally.

Keeping fingers crossed.
