INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Please secure your lamp in a way that it will not fall. A chain will work well. Just zip tie it to the chain so that it can't slip down. That way you can adjust the height as needed. Be aware that there have been a lot of fires started by heat lamps in barns and coops.

There is a lot of good help to be found on BYC. Many members here have raised chickens for decades and they have the hands-on experience that you can't always find in books. Especially with the current ease of self-publishing. (Not all chicken books are created equal

Well received my SFH eggs I won on EBay. I'm shorted 4 eggs! The add said 6 eggs and then at the bottom it said the hens had been laying great so make it 12 eggs. I sent a message to seller, awaiting a response. She has 2 other ads out that say the same things. Well see if she sends them. If she does I have another staggered hatch. Grrr! But I guess that is better than not receiving them at all.

Oh noo! Hope she makes it right, that's frustrating!

Giving her to reply again then filing a claim. She stated that it clearly states 6 eggs and I got 2 extras. I should be happy for that. I told her again that she updated the ad to state 12 eggs at bottom of listing. She again said I should be happy with what I received and hope I have a good hatch. I responded if she even read what I last sent and for her to take another look at her ads and asked what she was going to do to make it right.

Just got an email that she partially refunded for the missing eggs. I'd rather have the 4 more eggs, but I will live with the partial refund.

On keeping the chickens where you want them... I use the electronet. I use it mainly because we occasionally have stray dogs and the electric takes care of that. I use the solar charger with mine so that I don't have to worry about recharging batteries.

In the future I'll likely let them roam the whole property without the netting but there are places here that have need to be "re-claimed" as far as being sure there aren't nails, barbed wire, etc, before they can just go loose.

The nice thing about the netting is that you can move it. So...you start out using one part of your grass/pasture, etc., then move it so that the part they were on first can recover while they are using a different area.

I use the poultry net Plus as it has more stakes. Mine also has DOUBLE SPIKES. Mine is also green...blends in a bit better if you have neighbors to please. They have a variety of different kinds of netting. The poultry net has smaller holes near the bottom but SMALL CHICKS CAN STILL GET THROUGH so you have to be aware of that.

The fencing itself is not too expensive. The largest expense is the charger (there are 3 different kinds to choose from..solar is the most expensive.)

Here's a couple of links:

This video show how it works. (He's not using the solar charger:

And here's mine:

If you look way back in these photos, you can see the netting dividing off the area that I want them to go in.

Whoops...forgot to say about the electronet that you have to keep the bottom clear so that it doesn't ground out and lose power. I didn't use it while there was snow any deeper than 1" so I'm just putting it out again yesterday after having it down while the deep snow was on the ground.

Premier has a fence catalog that is extremely helpful in understanding how it all works. They'll also talk w/you on the phone and answer questions but I'd ask for someone that has lots of experience with the fence (sometimes the younger ones don't have the experience from what I've found.) You can request the catalog on-line and they send it out really fast.
