INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hi all,

Well, I am very behind and don't have the time right now to catch up on all posts - that will have to wait til tomorrow! Got to visit Sally yesterday and see her setup and meet her new kids. Wish I could have stayed longer but had to head on over to racin's to pick up our little roo. He is a 6 week old Legbar and is adorable and so sweet. Racin said he was not even sure he had ever been held before but he doesn't seem to mind now. He is quite the little snuggler. Of course his only companions are human right now since he is quarantined. He is a little sad and lonely. When I noticed he hadn't eaten much at all today and wasn't making a peep I got the girls onto the back porch and held him up to the window so he could see some other chickens. He perked up right away and started peeping and when he went back to his cage he promptly ate. So he just needs to see he is not the only chicken around and he feels better!

Enjoy this chilly night!

Hey everybody. :) I was just wondering if anyone had some advice for me on picking an incubator (I will be breeding buff orpingtons, lavender orpingtons, and chocolate orpington bantams). I don't want it to be very expensive (I'll probably be asking for it for Christmas as I don't need it until next year). I know you guys probably think i'm nuts for already checking them out but I want to get the best one possible.
My 4-H leader is trying to convince me to show chickens next year as showing goats went really well this year (I got grand champ, reserve grand champ, and master showman) and she wants me to get into showing more animal. My mom said i might be able to show my barred Plymouth rock rooster.
I got a new gaurd dog for my chickens. He is the best dog ever!
Last but not least my lavender orpington roo is beginning to crow!
The styrofoam models do take more effort to do a good cleaning.
Congrats on the fair, thats great!
I love the LO's crow, its very deep and throaty!

Lol. I get so frustrated when I post things for sale online. Just posted the chocolate orp cockerel on a Facebook group. In the ad, I had pictures, sex, age, asking amount, and my location. First reply, where are you located and have any hens? I reply location in post and only the cockerel (if I had hens, I'd post them!). They apologize for missing location and want to know how far away I am from Rochester. Last time I looked I'm not a map or a gps! You are replying to my ad with some sort of device with internet connection. Why not google it yourself!

I almost can't stand craigslist anymore, for that same reason. And a lot of creepers lately too.

Quote: Exactly. I don't even respond to them anymore!

I swear I have a nack for busting Broodies. I had a broody production red and I move her to a best with fertile eggs and she jumps off the next and goes and starts pecking around with her buddies. I want Broodies! I am hopin I go back and she is on the nest
I need you over here!

Quote: Great post on the rabbit info, I am still considering it soon, may just wait til spring tho.

Well, I've been absent and have had a weeks worth of catching up to do. Finally caught up.

Hopefully...

It looks like everyone had fun at the Chickenfest. I'm so sad I missed it. We got busy and completely forgot!

Oh well, there is always next year and by then I can drive myself!

I saw some really cute pics of chicks and goats and cows and.....Kangaroos? And other exotic animals I can't spell right?! Love it! Their adorable! Somebody has their own personal zoo goin' on!

So, my county's fair was fun, my friends entered their rabbits and lol, the younger sister showed her older sisters rabbits and won while her sister well, she didn't win with her bunnies. However, they both 'borrowed' a cow to show, I don't know who from, some small farm they loan the cows out to 4hers. They did well and won but can't go to state because the people who own the cows don't go to state? Odd right?

Anyway the chicken shows disappointed me. Only four birds their truly looked good. Two white silkies, and two polish. One was frizzled!! The rest were your basic hatchery, farm store birds. And what got me was that the manual even says you can not enter a bird unless its a purebred. Yet I saw Golden comets and Production reds and black sex links. So I don't know what's up with that but there were also less birds it seemed. I'M disappointed I couldn't show my birds

Ah well.

I'm down three birds too. Thursday the week before last I was gone all day. Wake up that Friday to find one of my Barred Rock Cockerel cowering against the door, outside the grow out pen. Nothing too bad, missing some feathers, a bit ruffled, he pulled out of it. However, I found that I only had 8, instead of 9. Then I found that I was missing Rocket, my RIR/Production Red and Ivory, my EE. The confusing part? Coops were closed and no bodies, no feathers. I found five feathers next to my dogs area but not enough to say my dog mauled the barred rock cockerel I am missing. Those are the only feathers I found and I looked all over! Anyone have ideas? My mom saw a fox far down the road coming to our house and a few nights ago I saw it as well but there is no way it could get into either coops so I'm stumped.
I am so sorry for the loss. Hopefully you will figure it out.

Just wanted to share a couple of shots of my girls! I got a brand new Canon EOS camera and snapped a few pics last night. I made the mistake of going out with the big lens (that people with unfriendly animals would need to shoot pics from far away lol) and had a lot of trouble getting glamor shots of all the girls crowding around my feet.

EE from RacinChickins :)

Beardless EE from RacinChickins :)

Ugga - Birchen Marans from Brad (her sister PeeWee has better birchen markings but she is in the klink getting over her broodiness)

The perfect canine - Izzy - Dachshund

Second perfect canine aka Sami SoSo- she is a Lusky (Lab/Husky)

"No No Bad Dog" aka Maya, Cattle Dog Lab Mix

Slightly less bad dog - Gus - Dachshund/Pekinese/Chi (the poo poo platter)

It also looks like I have another girl with bumble foot so I will get to try my Tricide-Neo and Preparation H treatment this week. Yep, totally walked into the pharmacy to buy Hemorrhoid cream for my chicken. I am that cool.
Love the pics! Congrats on the camera
