INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

For those who have PMd me, I will get back to you tomorrow.

On Saturday, we were getting ready to leave for my sister's bday/family reunion in Louisville when our younger DD called from Bloomington Hospital where she was receiving IVs for stomach problems and dehydration. DH and I headed to Btown where they determined that Lauren had food poisoning. Since she has CEBV, she gets sick easily. Jim and I brought her back to her house and stayed there that night. Her roommate was gone for the weekend. The first thing we did was throw almost everything out in the frig and clean it and the kitchen with bleach. Lauren felt better yesterday so we brought her to Louisville for the birthday event at Oxmoor farm, and our older DD return her to Btown while we stayed in Lville until today. Once again, I am exhausted and behind on the thread! I'm hoping for a non-eventful rest of the summer.

I know we have had some new members, and I apologize for not welcoming everyone yet, but here is information about our great Indiana Thread!

About the Indiana Thread~
To participate on the Indiana Thread, we ask that you follow byc.com’s rules for family-friendly posts. We have members of all ages. Our thread is known for being very active because our members are supportive, respectful of each other’s opinions, interesting, and fun! The Indiana Thread is a diverse group of fantastic members who range from newbies to experienced chicken owners, those who raise chickens for healthful food, and others who enjoy chickens as pets. And we love photos! Posts are not limited to the topic of chickens. There is no such thing as a “dumb” question! Whatever your questions may be, we likely have members who can help you.

Do you want to be listed on the Indiana BYC Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on this link: INDIANA BYC Members' List Look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options. (This link is also located below my signature on my posts and several other members’ posts).

If you’d like to be added, send a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” bradselig and CRSelvey (Cheryl) actually add the info, so you can PM either one of them directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. If you have any questions about this thread, please PM jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

Avatar Updates
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

Volunteers Needed
We’re always in need of helpful members to compile or update information or to work on special events. Volunteer as little or as much as your schedule allows. It’s nothing formal; just pitch in when you can. We also welcome ideas that you’d like to pursue. Just PM jchny2000, Mother2Hens, bradselig, or CRSelvey for more information. Thank you.

OK here's pictures of the milk house. Pardon the trash. That will be the first thing to go lol.

Inside. That's where the milkbcans used to go. Now I think it would make good nest boxes.

And my lavender silkie hen

I wish I could find some Silkies around me... I'm crossing fingers I find some at the swap.

I bet you can find a breeder near you!
I have to thank @lilmizscareall for the chance to buy her quad of partridge cochin bantams! They are just absolutely perfect and excited to add them to the breeding project!

Love the color! Congrats on the new babies!
I spent some time out with the kids, chickens, and children today. While I was out there I got looking at my growout pens and realized that tonight was the perfect night to change the birds around. Before today they had been sorted by hatch dates with all hatches in a 3 week period in one pen, then the next 3 weeks in another. Now for the most part my pens are sorted by breed with the culled pullets in the layer growout pen and culled roosters in the duck pen.

I also confirmed that I hatched out way more roosters than pullets this season. We keep pulling roosters from the layer pen and yet every time I go to add more pullets to the layers we pull out a few more roosters. I must have at least 20 younger roosters growing out in the duck run and another 10 mixed in with the layers with another 7-10 in the free ranging flock. And we processed early early summer too. So many roosters. Dh will be processing again as soon as we get the kids settled in ~ the fence put up, the shed door side finished, and the shed painted. So 2 maybe 3 weeks down the road.

I am set good rooster wise right now, and have some breathing room on them yet. I may need to sell hens tho, honestly.. My new layers from spring have all done very well. We have white eggs now from the leghorns!
And mama hen took her chicks outside today!

Welcome and was awesome meeting you!

Quote: Loved all the pic's! They are growing up so fast.

Great post on the rabbit info, I am still considering it soon, may just wait til spring tho.

I know, me too. I still don't have all of my chickens laying, and I think my DBTLSW needs to see some return on that investment before she signs off on another livestock project.

Found my first secret egg stash:

This is one of my newly-laying hens, a RIR. Possibly two hens - some of the eggs have a distinctly rosier tint. I have a black Orp who is a serious nest hog, bordering on broody, and the others are too dense to realize that there's more than one nest box. So she found a nice spot behind the dust bath box.

I have found some of her eggs in the coop, and possibly one or two in the nest, last week. Obviously I don't know how long she's been doing this... no more than a month for sure, and I'm guessing around two or three weeks.

This morning I'm going to move everything non-essential out of the coop to clear all the corners, and fill in the space behind the dust bath with litter. I'm hoping that if the nest boxes are the only dark place in the coop, they'll get used. If not, at least the eggs will be where I can see them.

So the question is, can I still eat these eggs, or should I toss them? I know eggs are often kept on the counter for several weeks, provided the bloom hasn't been washed off. I'm fairly certain these haven't been sat upon for any length of time beyond laying the next egg.

I have another question for the group, while I'm here. Right now 1/2 of my kinda small (108sqft) run is covered by a tarp. My thought was they'd like to have some shade outdoors. However, I never see the chickens in that part of the run - they're always in the coop or in the sun. The coop is 144sqft, so there's plenty of room in there for everyone to hang out. The question is, should I just ditch the tarp, so they have more sun? Does anyone else here have a totally unsheltered run?
