37nascarjunkie Welcome to the Indiana Thread!Hi all!
just another chicken enthusiast in the Evansville area, actually in Mccutchanville. Missed the meeting at the library but would love feedback from it. We have 11 hens 1 really nice roo and 4 naughty naughty fellows. Trying to decide what to do with them.
Thanks
Thanks for replying, at least I know I'm not the only one with XL Silkies. lol I have 2 Roo's that are sm like I think they should be and then the 2 XL Silkies. I personally like the littles better. I also don't like the combs on the white ones, straight combs like my BR's but purple. and as it turns out, ( I found out for sure today) 1 of them is ANOTHER Rooster!!! I need another rooster like I need a hole in the head.Im not from indiana, im looking for someone nearby with registered nigerian dwarf goats for sale... and I saw you.
we raise white silkies too and I honestly dont know why they are considered bantams, but they, I think, should way 36 oz as roosters... yeahk our silkies are as big as our comets too pretty much, but breeding for a small size is always best.
Well more bad news, seems that is all I have any more. Came back from town and found ALL 6 of my MF chicks dead. Something had got them and they were wet and scattered all over the yard. I found blood every place but it wasn't from the chicks, My LGD's had blood around their mouths and down their necks, but not their's, and no dead bodies of whatever it was. no holes in the fence any place. I am just at a loss and very upset about the chicks, I have wanted MF's for a long time and I finally get some and now this, Have been crying all night, cant stop. and now i'm thinking about Honey being sick and I will probably lose her, I try and get pullets for my boys ( Silkies ) they end up being Roo's, I have a BB Red that wants to beat everyone up and she is only supposed to be 8 weeks old. It just seems like someone is trying to tell me that Batmans are not in the cards for me. My LF kids are great !!!
Just at a loss here, dont know what I should do? Should I just get rid of them or just keep on trying to make it work? cause right now I just cant see it turning out for the good.
ok enough pity, me g'night.
What age?
Here's a pullet

Wanted to share our new red coop. It seems to be the start of a chicken village in the back yard. If so I may name the red one KFCsorry I couldn't resist. My sister (vegetarian) did not find my humor funny. I hope you guys know I am joking.
This is a picture of my "pullet" from the hatchery. I believe they were wrong. He is super friendly though. Out of the mixes we hatched and other ones I have gotten. I may be a little rooster heavy:/

I personally have nothing bad to say about the BA's they are great, friendly, good with my grand kids and mine was a great mom ( even tho she only hatched 2 lol ) I have always had BO's until this year and only had 1 bad hen, she was just flat mean!! To people, other chickens and the dogs. As far as RIR's not a bad word about the hens, don't like the Roo's, I had 3 and all three were mean to the girls. ( not at the same time ) All 3 breeds were great layers and they even laid in the winter. What kind of bad experiences?
I see you found @M2H... lol She is great.Im in Southern Indiana (about 45 minutes from Louisville) Where did you all get the IN county maps? I would love to add one to my avatar to help ID my location!
I just got 3 SLW's this year so don't know much about them yet, what I can tell ya is although they aren't The " come pet me type " they are not mean in anyway to anything, they are very pretty, Mine tend to stay with themselves, even though they were raised with 20 others. At night they are not the lowest on the rost but not the highest either. Mine started laying at 19 weeks ( had to look that up, I keep records ) They will come when called only f they see the feed bucket, lol kinda independent.... great free rangers, and really good giving warnings. Thats all I got for right now, hope this helped ya out some.I would like to know what bad experiences you had with the Wyandottes specifically. I have 2 silver laced and 3 golden chicks and they are more skittish than all the other chicks. I can easily pick all but the Wyandottes up. Am I in for a rough ride with these birds?
Bad eggs in every breed I think.I never had a problem with the breed. Just becuase they might not of worked out with one person, doesn't mean they are persay not a good breed.A lot of things go into how a chicken behaves, and you could do everything right and just have a bad egg. I don't like Buff orps, not the birds for me-wouldnt ever get them again. But TONs of people love buff orps
we play the egg toss too and we always lose to our 23 year old son... lolWe are waiting 2 weeks before we use the eggs again. It dies give us time and practice our throwing skills. And last night we did a mini egg toss!! My wife and I lost to my Daughter and Son lol
If you do get chicks and adult birds, Keep them apart till they are bout the same sz, after that it only took mine about a week of learning who was who and now they all know their place and get along just fine. I also agree that ISA's are great egg layers, this is my first year for them, they started laying first and have not stopped since, good sz egg too.LKShepherd, there is also a show in Spencer on August 30, at the Spencer fair grounds. I have heard this is a great place to get some birds. It's a little closer than Lebanon too. My favorite is the ISA brown for egg laying and mine is the friendliest bird I have( but you can only get them through Townline hatchery. I also like Rhode Island Reds and barred rocks. My least favorite is my Welsummer, but only because she always stays to herself and doesn't really interact with the rest of the flock, and they have all gown up together. I also recommend starting with chicks, depending on where you get older birds, you really never know what you are going to get. I learned this the hard way. If you get anything off of the people on this group you will be okay, they are great and really take pride in their birds, so you would get great birds, just be careful getting older girls from anywhere else.![]()
Congrats!! So verry cute.Baby pictures!! The baby is still in the incubator drying, and my good camera won't take pictures through the window on the incubator. So here are a few cell phone pictures for now!![]()

So, introducing 'Little One'! Also known as baby, squirt, cutie pie, bobbles, winky, junior, and, well, you get the idea.I am hesitant to name the baby until I know if it's a boy or a girl. However, for now, I'm calling it a girl simply because it would be easier to house a lone female duck over the winter, assuming I don't find a good source for more bantam ducks before next year.![]()
Stretching out! There's so much more elbow room now!![]()
Baby's right eye isn't opening as far as the other. It looks like it might be opening further as the baby dries, though, so I'm hoping it's just gunked shut and not a problem.Anyway, now y'all know where the nickname 'winky' came from.![]()

And crash!Hatching is such hard work...![]()
That's a little digital thermometer that she's resting her little wing on, by the way. I don't know if that's a good size comparison or not, but it's about average size for those round thermometers and hygrometers. As tiny as the baby is, it's hard to believe she fit in that little egg! She looks huge next to it!!![]()

Wish I still had a pic of it as a chick. Maybe I can find one tomorrow.
Looks like everyone is having a good time esp, the kids ( chickens )Enjoying some evening free range time. My daughter took these photos. I love the sun shining through in this one.
After they had plenty of time for bug and frog hunting we spent some time getting them comfortable being held. Scratch made the perfect lure, lol. Esther (in the foreground) and Houdini (at the back) are two of our three EEs. They are bookends to most of our BOs and Red Stars. Three of our four RSs are now laying. Woo hoo!
Fred even took time to enjoy the treat.
Here's my hubby - aka the Pied Piper of Chickens. As soon as they saw him get the cup of scratch out of the coop they were right behind him. They could hardly wait until he sat down. ;-)
Congrats on the new coop, I think KFC would be great.... lol
