INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

And while I'm here, here are some pictures of the baby ducky! :D Anyone with experience with ducks know what color she might be? I'm assuming she's not one of the darker colors like black, gray, etc.

it has been my experience with ducklings that the feathers come in close to the down color or lighter, but not darker. My khaki's are a nasty or dirty mud color that changes to a much lighter tan. But the black sweedes started off black fuzzies and their feathers are still black but now a bit shiny. But their creamy down necks changed to white necks.

Those of you getting back from the swap, don't forget your biosecurity!

- Change out of the clothes you wore to the swap and put on clean clothes! Also, don't wear the shoes you wore at the swap around your birds until you've washed them!

- Wash any tools, cages, or other objects that you've brought home before taking them out to the same area as your birds!

- Quarantine all new birds for a minimum of 3 weeks, regardless of species! Put one bird from your flock in quarantine as well for at least one of those three weeks! I can post further details about quarantine if anyone needs them. :)

The pictures posted look like healthy birds, but it's best just to be safe and quarantine anyway! Best of luck! :)

Thank you! I did put them in the barn & I Lysol all over everything. I am trying to do it right. There were some birds there that were horrible looking. Dirty and smelly I felt so bad for them.

I have a question about an abused hen. My father-in-law started this whole chicken madness we now both have. I aquired a dozen hens and a rooster for him (bought someone elses flock). Once the flock moved to my FIL's coop, one hen became a victim of the rooster. He started to mate her mericilessly and pluck her bottom. It's been over a year now and he's added quite a few hens and roosters. He has 4 different flocks of chickens. All are in their own, very large coop and run. Each group has one rooster. It doesn't matter which flock this hen is in, all the roosters and now hens beat her up. As far as I can tell, they haven't broken the skin yet. She's nearly naked now. Tomorrow, she comes to me. I only have a hand-ful of 6 month-ish hens. Do I need to let her feathers grow back before I introduce her to my girls so they don't finish her off or is the nakedness of a chicken not really an issue?

I can't imagine she's very happy
I'd try let her feathers grow back before submitting her to
Being attacked again

Ok, then my next question(s) would be how long before I can expect to see her feathering out? Will the feathers actually grow back after a year of plucking? Is there anything I can feed her to booster her up? She's not sick, but I can't imagine the stress did her any good.

Our culled to the layer flock CCL rooster passed last night. He had been in the free ranging flock for a few weeks now. I think he got into the goat feed on Wed. I'm almost sure that is what did him in. He had been too calm since then, he just was not himself. At least now I know chickens can't eat goat feed and goat's can't eat chicken feed.
My chickens eat goat feed all the time as they free rang with the goats allot. At feed time they will share, never had a problem. My goats have ate the chicken feed didn't like it cause it can cause bloat in goats but I guess they didn't eat enough for that. This has happened allott lately, going to stop tomorrow, fixing gates so the little gate crasher cant crash no more... lol

Goats can eat chicken feed. Not only have they gotten in it when try weren't suppose to, but if we run out we will give them a touch of chicken feed so they don't get too hungry. They can also eat rabbit feed. They got into that too. I don't know of anything they can't eat. Mine have ate so many things it isn't funny. Plus sometimes the chickens would go scratch around in te goat feed and they were fine. They aren't together anymore though
I don't have the breeds anymore, because they aren't my favorites. But I don't care about eggs since I don't eat them so my chicken breed pool is so much bigger

What kind of chickens are those??

don't know how well it works cause I have never used it. and not for sure if it is intended for regrowth of that kind ( I'm sure someone here will be better with the info then me ) but I have seen a feed in a 10lb bag called feather fixer. ????

Ok, then my next question(s) would be how long before I can expect to see her feathering out? Will the feathers actually grow back after a year of plucking? Is there anything I can feed her to booster her up? She's not sick, but I can't imagine the stress did her any good.
Maybe add some vit. supplement cause I do know it takes allot to regrow feathers.
