Hello Everyone! My name is Elizabeth and I am VERY new to the chicken world. I am a city girl, just 1/2 block out of the city. I (and my family) am building a coop as quickly as possible because I bought chicks, and then more chicks, and then more chicks, and then even some more chicks. We have ISA Browns, Ameraucanas, Amber Links, Barred Rocks, Black Sex LInks, and a few that were labeled Silver Laced Wyandottes (but were the wrong color, so I think they are just going to be our mystery chicks). We have a total of 23! Yes, I was only going to get 5, and I ended up with 23!

Our coop is 8' x 12', which I believe is big enough for 24 chickens. Whew, I came in just under the wire on that one! My plan for the chicken run was going to be 8' x 20' off each side of the coop with a coop door on either side of the coop. They can pick and choose which run to be in or go back and forth.

My question is... Is that enough run space for 23 chickens?

I also have a few Indiana specific questions...

Do you have your coop insulated? Does it need to be insulated?

Do you have a heat light in your coop? Do you need one in there (besides the one under the water in winter).?

I have 5 windows to help ventilate in the summer as well as a vent fan and a second vent? Will the vent fan and the second vent be enough ventilation in the winter?

Do I have to cover and keep my runs free of snow in the winter, or do they go out in the snow?

Thank you so much in advance for all of your knowledge, and for sharing that knowledge with me.

Elizabeth

! Lots of good questions, and I see you already suffer from chicken math

1. No insulation in my coop. Starting with newborn chicks, they need 95 degrees and to be free of drafts, subtract 5 degrees a week til they are fully feathered.
I move them outdoors when they are feathered out and roosting/flying around.
2. No heat, and i just change water a few times daily.
3. Ventilation sounds fine!
4. Mine tramp all over the property in the snow.
If you think of more questions, ask away! We are all chicken addicts here

Welcome to strssdmom and jhfamily5! I am jealous of your interesting flocks!

To Out of the Brooder: Thanks, the photo was taken in October 2012 (They just turned one years old this month). I keep waiting until the weather/scenery improves to take some new photos of my little flock. I wish I had a camera handy yesterday. I looked outside and my Jersey Giant was perched on the deck railing, and just a foot away there were two little sparrows perched right next to each other. They looked like they were Jersey's baby chicks. That's about as close as I'm going to get to having baby chicks! : - (

Does anyone know who lost the lav orp in Campvilesville, In? I found a post for some in Ky on craigslist. I don't know if these are theirs but I thought I would post it and they might know. [email protected] This is the reply address for them. Check it out for louisville craigslist.
Thanks, Momma 2 silkies! I emailed the info to the family who sent this reply:
Thank you to the Indiana BYC member who noticed the Louisville craigslist ad, and to all the members for helping us. The Leitchfield ad was for chicks. Whoever took our boys and girls can't possibly have chicks from them yet. Also, their original ad appeared on Feb 7, a full month before ours disappeared. I'm working closely with the police and we are making some progress! Several others have contacted me about this ad. It is absolutely amazing how the "chicken community" has rallied around to try and help us. We are so grateful and so blessed to be part of such a caring group of people. As soon as I find out anything I will let you know. Thanks again!

I replied: I figured it was a long shot, but I thought that perhaps the people from the ad might have bought your flock from someone to increase their Lavender flock business. I'm glad to hear that progress is being made and that the police are even interested! I know that the BYC Indiana chicken community is still actively involved in keeping their eyes and ears open for any Lavender sightings or information.
