INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have a family member that lost several of their flock to a predator. I thought I recently saw @sallyinindiana had some pullets she was looking to rehome...? Anyone nearby needing to be rid of a handful of hens/pullets?

I've got a couple of hens that I need to get rid of. I don't know for sure who's laying right now though I've got a few that are molting.

I know it's a late post but I seen someone saying post your next year goals. I just ordered 10 dark brahma hatching eggs and 5 black French Copper Marans hatching eggs. Next years goal is to start breeding Dark Brahmas, Light Brahmas, and BBS French Copper Marans.

This will be my first time trying to breed, so I might be posting frequent questions.

I added a few things to the brooder... I think the chicks are happy :)

and I SWEAR, it's really the dog panting in the background!

My momma hen did well. She hatched 8 of the 10 eggs she had left. She had smashed 2 eggs earlier. Of the 2 that didn't hatch one never developed and the others abdomen didn't close.

The little blue one is my favorite!

That's great! I love seeing "my" offspring! Thanks for posting! You should be able to tell pullets vs. roos in a short time. .about week 3. Unless of course they are Olive Eggers those take a bit longer. If you need help post pics and I'll do my best for you. I love the blues too! Hoping to breed for Splash next year!

When you know what you have PM me and we'll see what we can work out. I'm not sure if they care what they are. I know they've been wanting some of my BCM so not sure if that's why they asked me but I don't have any girls I am willing to part with. Lol

My goals for next year are to start breeding Lavender and Jubilee Orpingtons, while DH continues our egg sales. The Lavenders should be ready sooner, even though they are younger, especially since one of the cockerels (named LaRue) started crowing this morning! I will probably wait for the black/lav split babies, mentioned below, to grow up first so I can avoid Lav x Lav breedings this year. I figure the Jubilees will be ready by late winter/early spring. I am also going to use the second Lavender cockerel to replenish our mixed layer flock. He will be a very busy boy! I hope we will still have one or two Australorps laying, and have plenty of hatchery BO's and a couple of RIRs (Rhodie and Blondie), plus one Ameracauna (Sam) and one Light Brahma (Pepper) (long story on the two "oddballs," but they provide some visual variety). Right now we are raising 7 black/lav split English Orpington chicks that are 9 days old, and I have a black English Orpington pullet (Cleo) from totally different lines to make a second line of black/lav splits. I'll also have to invest in a 50 egg incubator, and on my wish list is a Sweeter Heater for the main henhouse.

Great video. Very cute chicks, and lovely dogs. I am interested to hear how your feed-catcher innovation works out. Even if you can't reuse the food, it might at least keep food out of the water.
Thank you, The catcher has only been in place now for a few hours and it's working GREAT! I have already collected TONS of food, none in the water and because I used such small mesh fencing... none of the wood chips is getting into the feed either. Looks like I will be able to re-use the food at this rate :) I ended up putting the waterer on a bowl (upside down) so that it sits a bit higher then the wood chips and as you can see from the pic, it's working well too.

Hiding... You're doing it wrong...

Just thought I would show this cutness from the other day when I evicted the 2 month olds out of a grow out pen into the main coop. This pair of Cochins was hiding from the big bully birds.

Too cute/funny!!!! If they can't see you...you can't see them-right? Lol.
