INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Had a great weekend despite all the humidity. Also our bees swarmed on Friday while I was working from home. One minute was working on my laptop, the next minute they were looking suspicious, and sure enough they swarmed a couple minutes later. They flew up into a tree, then at night, they all flew back and stayed on the outside of this hive. Who's ever heard of a swarm in August? Especially since we just added a brand new deep to the hive 2 weeks prior.

I have 2 broody chickens again. The one below has already hatched out and raised chicks once this summer. I took her out of the coop so she could cool down while I misted the chickens and she gave me a really funny look.

I saw this at Lowe's this weekend, it is an outdoor fan with a built-in mister. Thought it would be great for a chicken coop if it wasn't so pricey! Hoping that it goes down (we are at Lowe's every weekend it seems lately) and we can get it on clearance!

The chicks are getting larger, but still don't want to sit for pictures. Wish they would hold still long enough! Here they are with the opaline guinea in the middle. I am starting to think the silkies believe they are guineas and the guinea believes she's a head silkie. LOL

Anyone else feel like they're melting? Normally I wouldn't complain but it's been so nice so far it makes it 10 times worse :( At least my chickens seem to be ok so far though. I'm really hoping it cools off like they're predicting so we can get all out Roos processed next Monday.

I went out a little while ago to settle in some girls I picked up from Sally (I'm supposed to be down sizing ;)) and momma hen has finally taken her chicks out of their box! They were SO cute running around on the floor of the coop!

Me! I hate heat.

I hate it, too. Middle-aged women aren't designed for heat tolerance. It took me two trips to do what I needed to get done this morning, with a break to cool down in between. DH just about had a heat stroke because he stayed out too long at one time a little while ago. He's off to Meijer to pick up a box fan to pull air through our bachelor pads and the main coop. I think it's going to create a hurricane of dirt, straw, and dried chicken poop, but we'll just have to put it up high enough so that doesn't happen!

DH also hung a huge tarp from the roof across to a section of fence so the kiddos in the bachelor pads now at least have deep shade over a much larger area than they had before. I just hope it stays in place with these periodic thunderstorms we'll be getting until the weather cools back down again! Can't happen soon enough. I was so enjoying the absence of "real" summer.

I hate the heat as well. Since I don't have a pool, I've been enjoying my day sitting in the AC and at hung Scrubs on Netflix.

@SallyinIndiana, you read my mind. Not like I need a micro pig, but I am intrigued by them!

Finally got a polish at the swap meet last weekend and this is what my wife does to him while I'm at work.

Regular hoses also contain lead that can leach into them as well.

For the water that the animals drink, I have lead-free hoses. They are always on and totally filled with water as they have a shut-off valve at the end of the hose. When I turn them on, I let the water run until it's cold to clear out all the hot water and whatever is leaching into it from the hose interior.

Problem w/mine is that it sits in the sun all day long...no way to avoid that. Which is why running a float valve from them would probably not be a good thing, unfortunately.

And...we always drank out of the lead-filled hoses when we were kids too :D
