Sad news--we have confirmed that we have 2 roos and they need to go to new homes.

They are both 5 months old. Would prefer they do not go into the stew pot.

Dali is a very large white silkie. He is as big as our Delaware hen. I had no idea silkies were this size, I thought they were smaller.
Virtually featherless legs. I chose the chick with featherless legs purposely to do best in the snow.
He's very sweet, and I have not heard him crow. I saw him 'hitch a ride' on the back of our Marans hen--I'm sure he's a roo, even though he's not crowing.
He's a gentleman, and calls the girls over for every little thing of interest he finds in the run.


Here's Cher. He's a Frizzled Sizzle. Blue Partridge color I think, could be blue with red leakage. He's on the small size. This weekend he 'hitched a ride' on the back of our Cream Legbar hen and she kept walking like she didn't know he was there.
Our Cream Legbars are little birds, and he is about the size of a legbar.
I'm asking $15 for him.

my chickens would not use the nipples either. Now we use waterers that have easy to remove lids and just poor more water in each night. We do have to clean them about once a month on the inside and the drinking area daily. I would think the small amount of water that stays in the cup would evaporate quick enough to avoid getting extremely hot. I know our water in the pool evaporates without getting hot. I'm thinking the same thing happens in my chicken waterers as the water in the red trays is warm but never as warm as my child's bath.

If you see the heated dog water bowls on sale, let me know I need about 10 more to be able to put one in each area with the breader trios or sets.

Next question for those of you that use lighting to increase winter production, how bright of a light do you use and what kind of a fixture. I have Christmas rope lighting in 2 coops but i need to come up with a bit brighter lighting for the breeding pens I think.

where do you find waters that you fill from the top? What are they called? I have not seen any like that.
I use a 40 wt yellow light, in a hanging socket thingy, hung at the very top of my coop. It is also set on a timer to shut off at 8 pm and on at 6am.

Do you think those new waterers of yours would stay thawed if you put an aquarium heater inside them?

I have wondered about that too. just scared to try it.

It doesn't get too warm. It's in the shade majority of the time. I will also be dropping a frozen water bottle in the bucket to help maintain temp in there. I will also insulate the bucket. The way my pens are set up, all my pens (10 total) will be supplied by the 5 gallon bucket. So hopefully it will be filled several times a day to keep water fresh. I'll be putting some ACV in the bucket to help keep it clean.

I have looked all over and can not find ACV. ???

It seems like an aquarium heater would try to heat the water to an unrealistic temperature, plus i don't know if they are ok to use with plastic (would they melt the bucket?). I was thinking a stock tank deicer or a birdbath deicer for my buckets.

I happened to read something recently that humans shouldn't drink out of a garden hose since it typically sits in the sun, so it's warm, moist, and dark inside-- perfect for growing bacteria. I thought of all the times as a kid that I'd be hot outside, so I'd grab the hose. Guess I survived, more or less.

DH does that all the time.. lol

We used 40 watt light in a hanging fixer like u use to work on a car. And our chicken laid all winter and our turkey hen did as well. Be careful how close it is to the water cause it can cause algae to grow quickly. I clean mine a lot. Any light is hard. The whole watering thing is always an issue. There seems to be no easy way to approach it.

Had a great weekend despite all the humidity. Also our bees swarmed on Friday while I was working from home. One minute was working on my laptop, the next minute they were looking suspicious, and sure enough they swarmed a couple minutes later. They flew up into a tree, then at night, they all flew back and stayed on the outside of this hive. Who's ever heard of a swarm in August? Especially since we just added a brand new deep to the hive 2 weeks prior.




I have 2 broody chickens again. The one below has already hatched out and raised chicks once this summer. I took her out of the coop so she could cool down while I misted the chickens and she gave me a really funny look.




I saw this at Lowe's this weekend, it is an outdoor fan with a built-in mister. Thought it would be great for a chicken coop if it wasn't so pricey! Hoping that it goes down (we are at Lowe's every weekend it seems lately) and we can get it on clearance!



The chicks are getting larger, but still don't want to sit for pictures. Wish they would hold still long enough! Here they are with the opaline guinea in the middle. I am starting to think the silkies believe they are guineas and the guinea believes she's a head silkie. LOL

Anyone else feel like they're melting? Normally I wouldn't complain but it's been so nice so far it makes it 10 times worse

At least my chickens seem to be ok so far though. I'm really hoping it cools off like they're predicting so we can get all out Roos processed next Monday.

I went out a little while ago to settle in some girls I picked up from Sally (I'm supposed to be down sizing

) and momma hen has finally taken her chicks out of their box! They were SO cute running around on the floor of the coop!

when is it supposed to cool off?



I keep seeing that people are getting fans put in the coops for the chickens, didnt know you could do that, would that cause respiratory issues? Just asking cause I don't know.

H is pretty lol! Why is he sitting on his hocks if you don't mind me asking?

I'm not sure why he sits on his hicks while he is eating. My light brahma roo does that too.

@chick rookie I find my ACV at Kroger in the health foods section. They sell the Braggs brand. I have also heard that Walmart carries it with the mother as well in a different brand (Heinz maybe?)

Now he would look quite a bit more manly if that was a tiny Indiana / Native American warrior head dress. he already has the feathers so even a tiny belt off of an historically dressed doll would work.

my chickens sit like that if the are on a smooth surface, including my driveway.

Apparently the heat made my hens want to go broody again. I bought some hatching eggs to put under one. This is my first time buying hatching eggs so now the questions begin lol.

Is there anything special I have to do to the eggs before setting them under the hens?

Apparently the heat made my hens want to go broody again. I bought some hatching eggs to put under one. This is my first time buying hatching eggs so now the questions begin lol.

Is there anything special I have to do to the eggs before setting them under the hens?

If there is a chance of new eggs being laid by the other hens you may want to put a mark on each side of the hatching eggs. I draw a red circle on my broody's eggs, in about the same place a plastic egg would pop open.
Then each night I can move the broody off the nest for a bit or even just a few inches away to make sure no extra eggs are in the nest.

how much does a micro pig cost?  And how big do they get?

The price depends on size really. I'm selling mine for $300 each, and the parents are around the size of my 50lb bulldog.

I'm from Terre Haute area . We have 22 layers and one very sweet boy! We will be raising meat brides soon. All organic feed , our eggs our so good. They free range and love to run a round everywere. Most of them have names my grandkids love them. Our boys name is Rocky.
