INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Lots of bachelor pads lol. Sorry about your predicament. I quite ordering from hatcheries. It tucked me off when they would send me extra cockerels. As long as I have ordered Enough chicks to keep each other warm-I want ony what I ordered!
I might have to look into making smaller coops for the boys.... will they need to be seperated from each other?? Will they fight?

I don't plan to order from hatcheries anymore, I originally did it to start my homestead - but now that I been looking around, I want to try and get different kind of chicks... I already have my wish list:

If anyone has any of these for sale, please keep me in mind :)

You will have to wait until they are older to see how they get a long. But typically when they are raised together. They get along better. I have 5 cockerels in ine on right now. They are all brothers

I didn't get this option  ;(
taken from their website under the order policies tab
MINIMUM ORDER

The minimum dollar value for an order is $25.00 in poultry, excluding male only chick orders.

There is no minimum number of chicks you can order as long as your total order of poultry is $25.00, not including shipping and handling.

If your order consists of a very small number of items (less than the equivalent of a quarter of a box), there may be male chicks placed in the box for warmth or comfort during shipping. The breed of chicks included varies from order to order and unfortunately we are unable to identify the breed. If you do not wish for us to include males in your order, you may choose to purchase insurance for your shipment at a minimal cost.

Any order cancelled within 48 hours of the scheduled hatch date will be charged a $20.00 processing fee.

I do believe you have to call after you place your order. Atleast the last time I ordered it stated that I had to call if I didn't want the cockerels.

I talked to Ideal Poultry today... it's confirmed they have sent me 5 roos with my 10 pullets :( There is no way I will be able to keep all 5 for just 10 girls :( So I will have to find new homes for them once I can ID which ones are the roos :( I don't want them to be cooked, so keep in mind I will be looking for good homes for them when they are older. UNLESS There is away to keep them, but keep the girls safe.
A pen just for roosters will make life easier on the hens. They won't need much in the way off housing but they will WANT a nice size play area if you keep them past the crowing age.

I highly recommend you go to the chicken show in Lebanon, Indiana in Oct. or find out if there is a large KY show in October closer to you.

You can get a close up, almost hands on feel for the various breeds you have chosen. Right now you might need multiple coops if you stick with all of the pictured breeds. Silkies tend to prefer small but sumatras like space and height. Brahma's and wyndottes are on the larger side. Sumatra can be on the large side or on the bantam size. I'm not saying it can't be done but there is something about seeing a chicken up close that is better than the picture.
The best part about the shows is the list. I did not know about the list the first time I went to a show but now I know. Somewhere near a sign in area, there is typically a table that has a list of the chicken owner and the chickens they brought along with an address to contact the breeder.

Sometimes the show organizer will just know who is the most likely to have the best in a specific breed. Down South there used to be a breeder ~ Bob ~ he had great Banty RIR. He was well known.

Then there are breed threads on here and most posters will help you get in contact with a semi local breeder.

It sounds like you have a lot off roosters already. If you are still looking for a sumatra, I should have a couple of roosters available by the Lebanon show. they would be under a year old but close to mating age. They would be able to crow. They would not be quite as dark as the picture but they would be close the sumatra hen I might have a pair of those but they sure don't look anything like the roosters. They do tend to go broody and you already have silkies listed.
Brad and a few others on here raise silkies.

I may have some blue black and partridge silkies available by the Lebanon show. The youngest would be about 2-3 months old. I may have an idea of sex by then but not likely and definitely wouldn't be able to guarantee. Darn silkies are a pain to sex.

@LKShepherd I totally agree that cockerels raised together usually get along fine as soon as they sort out who is where in the pecking order. When we had four cockerels in our first straight run bunch, only two did a lot of posturing for dominance, but neither was ever injured. They got along very well. I hope that my Jubilee and Lavender boys will get along because when all is said and done this fall, they will be sharing their own small yard, but I will house them in adjacent bachelor pads (where they can see each other through the hardware cloth for the bottom 3-4 feet of the structures). The Lavenders are younger and smaller, but more "mature" than the Jubilees. I hope they will be able to share the yard. If not, they'll have to take turns, but I think they'll be fine. I firmly expect LaRue to rule the boys.

I hate the heat as well. Since I don't have a pool, I've been enjoying my day sitting in the AC and at hung Scrubs on Netflix.

@SallyinIndiana, you read my mind. Not like I need a micro pig, but I am intrigued by them!

None of us do! So why do I feel like I do? My DH reminded me we need to house the ones we have first:( he's such a realist. I must be the dreamer...
